World Car Awards: Volvo EX90 claims World Luxury Car title

The seven-seat family SUV claims the title of World Luxury Car with its comfortable and refined interior, advanced safety technology and distinctive Scandinavian design. The EX90 took the crown as the results were announced today, ahead of the New York International Auto Show in Manhattan. The World Car Awards jury, made up of 96 car journalists from 30 countries, evaluated the EX90 during extensive test drives where they could fully appreciate the silent yet powerful ride of the 510 horsepower, twin motor EX90, along with its ergonomic and luxurious interior designed for long-journey comfort. “We’re pleased to see the EX90 get the recognition it truly deserves,” says Håkan Samuelsson, chief executive officer of Volvo Cars. “It was up against some tough competition, but this award proves that the EX90 appeals to some of the most demanding customers across the world.” The design approach for the EX90 is straightforward and boils down to some of the underlying fundamentals of Scandinavian design. An important aspect is that form follows function. The front end is confident, yet smoothly rounded, allowing air to flow optimally around the car. This design, combined with flush elements such as side glazing, also significantly improves aerodynamics and efficiency. Integrating the lidar on the EX90 was an aerodynamic challenge, but worthwhile due to its contribution to safety when combined with cameras, radars and ultrasonic sensors. Together, they provide a detailed image of what’s going on around the car. To maximise its effectiveness and reduce aerodynamic drag, we have integrated it at the centre of the roofline under a low-profile cover – a nearly seamless solution. Inside the cabin, which is among the quietest of the segment, the EX90 introduces new progressive materials that highlight Volvo Cars’ unique perspective on modern luxury. Nordico, for example, is a leather-free upholstery with an elegant look, made from recycled materials and bio-attributed material from forests in Sweden and Finland. The advanced interior LED technology, which reproduces a light spectrum close to natural sunlight, and the back-lit wood decor add to the ambience onboard. Thanks to its true seven-seat configuration, the EX90 comes with a perk that is rare in its segment: ample trunk space. With all seven seats up, the EX90 has a load capacity of up to 324 litres behind the third row. With the third row folded, the storage capacity goes up to 697 litres, which makes the EX90 stand out among many of its peers. It plans for the first vehicles using the Future Hybrid Concept to reach the roads as early as 2028. Future Hybrid Concept is a step change in powertrain production. It consolidates the complex hybrid powertrain component stack into one compact unit, achieving significant system integration efficiencies. By eliminating most of the tooling and unique assembly steps required for hybrid system assembly and installation, the architecture also saves significant resources for OEMs planning for mixed propulsion production on the same line. Ragnar Burenius, Chief Engineer of xHEV systems at Horse Powertrain, says: “The Future Hybrid Concept is designing as a single-piece combustion engine, motor, and transmission unit, reducing the complexity of a hybrid powertrain. This allows more flexibility for its packaging, allowing for it to be integrated in existing BEV platforms with minimal modifications to the vehicle.” The compact size and geometry of the powertrain concept has been designed to replace the front electric drive unit of a BEV. Requiring only minor modifications, the powertrain bolts directly to the vehicle’s subframe, allowing OEMs to offer hybrid models on BEV platforms without having to commit to significant redesigns. It can also fit a traditional combustion vehicle platform. Fitted in an East/West orientation, Future Hybrid Concept has a ‘slimline’ top with a wider profile at the bottom, designed to ensure compliance with global safety and crash standards. It also features the power electronics systems required for an efficient hybrid powertrain, containing a controller, inverter, DC/DC converter, and on-board charger. It also includes an 800V charging booster for fast charging. Future Hybrid Concept has been designed to be used and operated anywhere in the world. It features a pre-chamber ignition system that supports a range of fuels, including gasoline, E85 ethanol flex fuels (an established fuel in South America), M100 methanol fuel (a rapidly growing alternative fuel in China, India, and sub-Saharan Africa), and synthetic fuels. The powertrain concept also anticipates numerous environmental and product design standards, with its compact packaging accommodating next-generation automotive heat pumps and the use of R290 refrigerants. Horse Powertrain’s comprehensive product range across the hybrid and combustion component stack, along with its expertise in full-powertrain integration, satisfies 80% of market requirements. Through an efficient System-on-Chip (SoC) with high computing power, it enables smooth, rapid responses to a wide range of driving scenarios. The group will present a Volkswagen- brand model with this technology in China before the end of this year. Starting next year, it will also be integrated into models based on the China-specific Compact Main Platform (CMP), marking it accessible to price-sensitive compact segment customers. The development marks a significant milestone in building up in-house development competence for core technologies that are in high demand among Chinese customers. Already today, a quarter of all newly registered vehicles in the Chinese market are equipped with a Level 2 driving system for highway scenarios. By 2030, Level 2+ is expected to be in use in more than 80 per cent of vehicles in the market. Level 2++, which covers both highway and urban traffic scenarios, is then expected to be installed in 75 per cent of new vehicles. In line with this outlook, Volkswagen Group established CARIZON a joint venture between its software lighthouse CARIAD and Chinese tech company Horizon Robotics, in November 2023 as part of its “In China, for China” strategy. The joint venture specialises in highly advanced automated driving systems for the Chinese market. Over the past 18 months, more than 500 software experts across the company’s Beijing and Shanghai locations have driven the development of the new ADAS technology forward. With two terabytes of data collected per vehicle per day and over 100,000 kilometres of test driving daily, GAIA enables highly automated AI training of the vehicle software. Compared to conventional data platforms without an AI Big-Data technology, GAIA accelerates data analysis sixfold and reduces the verification cycles of AI solutions to just one-twentieth of their original duration. Average repair costs up nearly 20 per cent for Britain’s top ten most popular used cars

Using data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) on the most popular used cars sold in 20241, Warrantywise compared figures from 2023 to 2024 inclusive. The findings highlight that repair costs are, on average, around 20 per cent more expensive than the previous year, and in in some instances nearly 30 per cent more. Among the models most impacted is the much-loved and now discontinued Ford Fiesta (#1 most popular used car in 20241) alongside a top-seller, the Vauxhall Astra (#7 most popular used car in 20241), both of which have experienced the steepest increases in repair costs. Not only was the Ford Fiesta the most popular used car sold in 2024, but its average repair cost has surged by £228 (a 25 per cent increase), while the Vauxhall Astra is now £234 more per average repair cost (a 28 per cent increase). On the other end of the spectrum, the Volkswagen Polo has been least impacted, earning the ‘Lowest Increase in Average Repair Cost Award’ with a modest rise of just 3 per cent (£22), according to the UK’s leading warranty company, Warrantywise. Antony Diggins, Managing Director of Warrantywise, said: “Our latest Reliability Index data from 2024 reveals some key trends for car owners to be aware of. With repair costs continuing to rise, it’s something all motorists will need to consider – especially given the wider economic challenges and inflation in the UK. Looking at the most popular choice of used car from 2024 to 2025, our reliability data highlights the importance of making informed decisions when buying second-hand. “That said, our [Warrantywise’s] data offers valuable insights for anyone looking to buy a used car or wanting to understand the potential repair issues with their current vehicle. It is also a reminder that cars are complex machines, even the most reliable ones can develop faults – no vehicle is completely immune. We urge drivers to check the latest Reliability Index from Warrantywise if they’re looking to buy a used vehicle, to give a real-world indication on reliability.” These rising repair costs come at a time when financial matters in the UK are in the spotlight. Despite the Consumer Prices Index (CPI) experiencing a significant decline, dropping from an annual rate of 7.3 per cent in 2023 to 2.5 per cent in December 20242, it seems that repair costs for vehicles are not tracking in line with this. Warrantywise warns that motorists with used cars that are outside of warranty could be the worst impacted. Press Kit: Renault Embleme – a laboratory on wheels for low-carbon mobility

Through Emblème, Renault is continuing the exploratory studies initiated with the Scenic Vision concept in 2022. Exploring the field of possibilities to the full, its aim is to create a working prototype of a family car –spacious, comfortable and high-tech – while taking decarbonisation to new levels. No aspect of decarbonisation can be studied as an isolated issue. Any approach has to address the entire vehicle life cycle from cradle to grave in five key areas: eco-design, selection of resources, production, use and end of life. Developed by Ampere, Renault Emblème is a demo car reflecting this approach. A vision of a low-carbon family car from start to finish, it emits 90% less greenhouse gases (CO2eq) over its entire life cycle than the 2019 baseline. Every technical, technological and stylistic choice was dictated by stringent specifications, targeting new levels of low-carbon mobility. Renault Emblème explores intelligent, credible and viable combinations, particularly in terms of resources, materials, production, use and end-of-life recovery. In this way, it achieves a 70% reduction in the carbon footprint for the production of all parts. At the same time, 50% of the materials used to build the car are recycled and virtually all the materials used are recyclable at the end of their service life. Engineers and designers worked together to find the best solutions in terms of aerodynamics and energy efficiency. The result is stunning: an elegant shooting brake, 4.80 metres long, with equal emphasis on styling, interior technology and its carbon footprint. It factors in raw material extraction and component production, as well as vehicle assembly, transport, use, maintenance and recycling. It is the international, multi-criterion tool used by Renault Group. One of its main uses is to calculate the global warming potential associated with greenhouse gas emissions measured in CO2 equivalent (CO2eq) per vehicle. Renault Group calculates the actual consumption of its vehicles over 200,000 km and 15 years. A Megane E-Tech electric, for example, emits 25 tonnes of CO2eq during its life cycle. This is practically half the amount of an equivalent model running on fossil fuels (50 tonnes of CO2eq in the case of a Captur with a petrol engine built in 2019). All-electric mobility, in other words, is more virtuous in terms of CO2eq emissions. On this basis, the total for the Emblème project is just 5 tonnes of CO2eq from cradle to grave. That’s a reduction of almost 90%! For Renault Emblème, this figure of 5 tonnes of CO2eq from cradle to grave is more than a promise. It has been calculated and audited by independent experts from IFPEN (Institut Français du Pétrole et des Energies Nouvelles). The decarbonisation strategy pursued by Renault Group (= reducing GHG emissions = reducing our carbon footprint) takes account of the entire vehicle life cycle. Emissions in tonnes of CO2eq per vehicle are calculated using a proven methodology covering each stage in the cycle: Supply of raw materials and parts Manufacturing (plants) Usage (when the car is on the road) End of life (vehicle recycling/recyclability). The levers of decarbonisation in each of these phases are: Energy efficiency Use of renewable energy The circular economy A GLOBAL APPROACH TO ECO-DESIGNAchieving this figure of just 5 tonnes of CO2 eq from cradle to grave demanded an ultra-efficient eco-design approach by Ampere, starting with the first stroke of the designer’s pencil and encompassing all the components of the vehicle. The quest for CO2 eq savings involved all stages of the process: from exterior design to the production of interior materials, through to powertrain development. Supported by modern, high-performance tools, project designers and engineers pushed the cursor to the limit in terms of innovation. “Renault Emblème rises to the challenges of decarbonization.
