Insecure roof box installation could lead to £2,500 fines as over half of UK drivers lack confidence in setup

Images are for editorial use only. Research from eBay reveals more than half (54%) of UK motorists are not confident when it comes to installing roof boxes on their car Nearly a third (31%) of UK drivers own a cycle rack or roof box yet 58% don’t know they could face fines for driving with them installed incorrectly Drivers caught with unsecured roof racks risk fines of up to £2,500, and three penalty points on their licence eBay’s My Garage function allows motorists to find the right roof accessories for their vehicle by entering their registration plate London, 24 July 2025 – As drivers across the country pack up their cars for their summer holidays, new research from eBay has revealed a worrying lack of confidence behind mounting roof accessories, with more than half (51%) of motorists not confident when installing them. While nearly a third (31%) of drivers own a cycle rack or roof box, more than half (58%) were unaware they risk a fine and three points on their licence for incorrectly installing them.Nearly a quarter (23%) of drivers in the study use roof accessories at least a few times a week, so UK drivers are risking huge fines which could put a dampener on their summer getaway. Failure to correctly secure a roof rack can result in a maximum fine of £2,500 and three penalty points on the driver’s licence under Section 40A of the Road Traffic Act 1998. Only 7% of motorists said they check and secure their roof box or cycle rack ahead of a road trip. They were much more likely to examine tyre pressures (70%) and oil and water levels (62%). While few will double check their roof box ahead of a trip, nearly a quarter (22%) said they would be happy to fit the accessories themselves. To ensure the roof box and fittings are correct, eBay is urging British motorists to use its My Garage function to ensure they are using the correct roof-mounted accessories for their vehicle. My Garage allows customers to input the registration or make and model of their vehicle. eBay will then display parts and accessories that are relevant to that vehicle on the Marketplace. This gives customers the confidence to purchase items regardless of their knowledge base. Abir Tewari, UK Director of Commercial Operations, Parts & Accessories at eBay, said: “Roof racks, boxes and cycle racks are a great way to maximise luggage space for summer holiday road trips and eBay’s My Garage function is specifically designed to put motorists at ease, by helping them find precisely the right accessory for their vehicle. “Installation is often straight forward but we advise motorists to take their time when fitting new accessories, follow the instructions and make sure their load is securely attached before setting off.” With eBay Assured Fit, when customers purchase an eligible vehicle part or accessory, if it doesn’t fit their vehicle, they can return it for free within 30 days of taking delivery of it and receive a full refund. -ENDS- Press Contactsebay@performancecomms.com About eBayeBay Inc. Government’s EV Grant chaos risks 3-month power cut to the UK’s electric future, says The Car Expert

Images are for editorial use only. Comment from Stuart Masson, Editorial Director of The Car Expert, on the recently announced Electric Car Grant from the UK Government. It is part of the Plan for Change and comes into effect on 16 July. London, UK 24 July 2025 The UK government’s new electric vehicle (EV) grant – billed as a way to support uptake and affordability – is fast becoming a textbook example of how not to run industrial policy. Right now, no one seems to know which cars will qualify, or what the actual grant values will be. The result? Consumer confidence has collapsed overnight. Manufacturers say EV sales have ground to a halt, with customers cancelling orders left and right in anticipation of price drops that might come with a £3,750 grant – if they’re lucky. One major carmaker said it would be a miracle if they get clarity within three months. That’s three months of paralysis in a sector that needs momentum. Others aren’t waiting: Chinese brands like Leapmotor, MG and GWM have already slashed prices to mimic the potential grant in a bid to restart stalled sales. European brands, like Alfa Romeo, are now following suit. This lack of clarity is not just damaging confidence – it’s distorting the market. What’s worse is that the fallout is entirely avoidable. With July sales already dented, and August traditionally quiet, the government is in danger of sabotaging the crucial September sales month unless it gets its act together, fast. The underlying issue is depressingly familiar: the government – and the civil service advising it – doesn’t seem to understand how the car industry works. Constant policy reversals, vague guidance, and last-minute decision-making have left manufacturers and consumers alike in limbo. If the UK is serious about leading the EV transition, this isn’t the way to do it. The government must urgently provide clear, detailed guidance – or risk losing both credibility and momentum in the shift to electrification. – ENDS – About The Car Expert:Established in 2011, The Car Expert is the UK’s leading automotive consumer advice platform, reaching over two million readers annually. Hampson races into Oulton Park

Images are for editorial use only. Competition and performance cars on pole position for fifth annual Gold Cup flagship sale Hampson’s races into Oulton Park this weekend for its fifth annual flagship Gold Cup sale of classic, performance and supercars on Sunday 27 July. The Oulton Park Gold Cup has been a highlight of Hampson Auctions’ sale calendar since Managing Director Zach Hamilton re-established the family company in 2020 and always attracts an incredible array of entries. This year is no exception – there are some very special entries amongst the 115 lots going under the hammer, with a significant number offered at No Reserve. Unsurprisingly, given the sale venue, the auction features a number of competition cars. Sitting on pole position is the unique 1984 Metro 6R4, built by Scottish rally driver Murray Grierson on a 6R4 rolling shell acquired from Group B stock after the Group B ban. This potent historic rally car is powered by a 2500cc Hart 420R engine, and Grierson enjoyed numerous successes in the car, including third overall in the 1989 Scottish Rally Championship. Today the car, which underwent comprehensive restoration in 2023, is eligible for Category 1 historic stage rally events, something the present owner has enthusiastically embraced (estimate £90,000-£100,000). Other notable competition cars include the track-ready 1981 Ford Escort Mk2 RS2000 . Presented in full period Rothmans livery, and boasting an outstanding specification, it is offered at No Reserve. There’s also a fully restored 1972 Ford Escort Mk1 Mexico, originally campaigned by Chris Lord in the 1973 British Rally Championship (£40,000-£45,000), a 1988 Renault 5 GT Turbo Cup car with period race and hill climb history (No Reserve) and a 1994 Renault Clio Williams Cup Challenge car. On of just three original Mark Fish cup cars built, it has already enjoyed a career in historic racing, winning the BARC Tin Tops Championship in 2013 (£15,000-£17,000). The fully race-prepared 2001 Mitsubishi EVO 6 GSR is another entry likely to catch the eye of those looking to go historic racing (£20,000-£22,000), while the 1963 Bond Equipe, complete with bucket seats, trip meter and rally clock is just waiting to go off on a classic regularity trial (No Reserve) Performance cars going under the Hampson hammer include the 2023 Lamborghini Urus Perfomante (£200,000-£250,000), 1978 Aston Martin V8 Oscar India (No Reserve), rare right-hand-drive 1976 Ferrari 308 GTB ‘Vetroresina’ (£80,000-£100,000), 1984 BMW E28 Hartge H5SP (£40,000-£50,000), 1995 Nissan Skyline R33 GTR V-Spec (£30,000-£35,000) and the 1989 Audi UR quattro 2.2 Turbo 10V (£35,000-£40,000). Also powering into Oulton Park are the 2016 Jaguar F-Type SVR with just 11,000 miles on the clock(£45,000-£55,000), a rare, UK-supplied fourth-generation 1993 Toyota Supra Twin-Turbo displaying fewer than 35,000 miles from new (£40,000-£45,000), a 1990 Nissan 300ZX Twin Turbo which was originally used by Nissan Tokyo as a promotional car (£6,000-£8,000) and not one but two Vauxhall VX220s – a 2004 Turbo (£12,000-£14,000) and a 2001 example, offered at No Reserve. Also going under the hammer are a beautiful 1981 Porsche 924 Turbo which has been in the same family ownership for nearly 40 years (No Reserve), a splendid 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX STI which received a brand-new engine in 2023 (£10,000-£12,000), and a 2010 Impreza WRX S that’s been fitted with STi interior, wheels, spoiler and front splitter (No Reserve). An ultra-rare gem – and offered at No Reserve – is the 1989 Suzuki Swift GTi. Boasting just 37,000 miles on the clock, this would make a fantastic addition to any JDM collection or retro performance car garage. For Landy lovers there’s the heavily upgraded, bespoke 1984 Land Rover Pickup 110 boasting a refurbished Toyota 4.2-litre turbocharged 6-cylinder engine, sourced from a Land Cruiser and mated to a Range Rover Classic 4-speed ZF automatic gearbox with a new torque converter (£13,000-£16,000). There’s also a 2014 Defender 110XS – a highly specified and extensively enhanced example of the much-loved British icon, a 2013 Range Rover Evoque and 2009 Range Rover Sport HSE, all offered at No Reserve. The sale also features a huge variety of classic cars, including an absolutely charming – and very rare 1926 Lea Francis J Type Drophead Coupe with coachwork by Cross & Ellis (£12,000-£14,000). From family saloons such as the 1966 Humber Hawk (£4,000-£6,000), 1978 Vauxhall Viva HC (No Reserve) to sports and performance cars such as the two-owners from new 1970 Lotus Europa S2 (No Reserve), 1967 Ford Lotus Cortina Mk2 (£25,000-£30,000) and 1967 Jaguar E-type 4.2 Litre FHC (No Reserve), there is something to suit every taste and budget. American car fans have much to choose from, including the actual 1965 Series III Cadillac Coupe Deville driven by Jon Hamm’s ‘Don Draper’ character in the later series of the hugely popular multiple Emmy award winning TV series ‘Mad Men’ (£25,000-£35,000), and a stable of Mustangs, including a genuine 1971 Mach 1 M Code (£30,000-£35,000). Hosepipe ban giving you a car care conundrum? Autoglym offers essential tips for drought-hit areas

Images are for editorial use only. Letchworth, 17 July 2025: In response to the introduction of hosepipe bans across large parts of the UK, Autoglym – the UK’s leading car care brand, has outlined 10 simple tips to help consumers keep their automotive pride and joy clean and protected while the restrictions remain in place. Four separate water authorities – Yorkshire Water, South East Water, Thames Water and Southern Water – have so far introduced bans that take effect from this month, affecting over seven million households. Anyone flouting the ban could be hit with a fine of up to £1,000. With warm conditions set to continue, more water authorities are expected to introduce their own restrictions very soon. The following tips have been devised by Autoglym’s UK-based R&D department, working closely with the company’s Technical Services Team who clean thousands of cars each year in all weathers. Top tips for hosepipe-free car care Rise and shine! Wash the car in the shade when the paintwork is cool; early mornings are ideal Use a dedicated pre-wash spray to loosen the worst of the dirt, then rinse thoroughly Wash using the two-bucket method – one filled with soapy water, one with clean water so you can rinse your mitt and avoid reapplying dirt to the car after cleaning each section Use lots of soapy water, clean one panel at a time and never scrub! Use specialist detergents if you encounter stubborn stains like tar or bird lime Rinse and repeat – wash in sections and rinse from the bottom up so you can see where the suds remain To clear soapy water from nooks and crannies, notably within the wheels, use an empty pump sprayer filled with clean water Watch out for water spotting – dry the car before the sun does by using a clean microfibre Between washes, deploy a detailing spray to avoid having to do a full clean so frequently If you don’t have time for a full hosepipe-free car wash, consider a quick clean of the glass and light units to maintain good visibility and keep the car looking presentable Apply protection to your paintwork to resist the grime, making the next clean much easier to perform Tips in detail 1. Rise and shine! Wash the car first thing in the morning, when the car is coolWherever possible, complete the full wash and protect process out of direct sunlight and ensure the surfaces are cool to the touch – mornings are often ideal. This ensures cleaning solutions have more time to attack the grime without drying out. 2. Use a dedicated pre-wash spray to loosen the worst of the dirt Hosepipes and pressure washers are great for removing the bulk of the dirt before you start the ‘contact wash’ with a mitt or sponge. However, the hosepipe ban doesn’t mean you have to skip this essential pre-wash stage. You can still apply a dedicated pre-wash spray such as Autoglym’s All-Purpose Cleaner to loosen the worst of the dirt, notably on the lower panels. Dead bugs on the front of the car and on the windscreen will be very difficult to shift through conventional washing, so use a specialist product like Autoglym’s Active Insect Remover to soften and loosen the remains. Then rinse thoroughly using a watering can, ideally with a rose fitted to spread the flow, working from the bottom up. 3. Wash using the two-bucket method – one with soapy water, one to rinse your mittOnce the car is pre-washed and well rinsed, start the contact wash using two buckets – one with the soapy water and another with clean water. Once you have washed a panel, dip your mitt or sponge in the separate bucket of clean water to rinse away the dirty suds. This ensures you don’t contaminate the soapy water and avoids you reapplying any dirt to the car – particularly important if you have to skip the pre-wash stage (tip 2). Work from the top of the car down, as the lower sections are likely to be dirtier and prolonged exposure to suds descending from the upper areas could be beneficial. Use a car-specific product, such as Autoglym Bodywork Shampoo Conditioner, which is low foaming so easier to rinse away. 4. Use lots of soapy water, clean one panel at a time and never scrub!Load your mitt or sponge with lots of soapy water to flood the surface at each pass, working on small sections of the car at a time. Using greater quantities of soapy water will help to loosen baked-on grit and grime; Autoglym’s Microfibre Wash Mitt is ideal for applying lots of soapy suds with each pass. Always avoid rubbing away at any stubborn dirt. Instead, do repeated passes with the soapy water, applying gentle pressure. If the dirt residues remain, revisit the area with the pre-wash spray or insect remover, which have active ingredients that help lift the grime. Tar residues which are more of a problem when the sun softens the road surface, can be easily wiped away with a dedicated product like Autoglym Intensive Tar Remover. 5. Rinse and repeat – wash in sections and rinse from the bottom upFlood the soapy surface with rinse water to prevent the suds from drying out. As it will take longer to rinse the whole car, it’s best to wash and rinse one section of the car at a time. Work from the bottom upwards, so you can more easily see where you have washed and where the rinse water is needed most. Autoglym Bodywork Shampoo Conditioner is an ideal cleaning agent because it also leaves a water repellent film that makes rinsing much easier. 6. Rinse the suds from nooks and crannies using a pump sprayerWhen attending to the wheels (using a dedicated product such as Autoglym Advanced All Wheel Cleaner) and other intricate areas, it can be difficult to fully rinse the cleaning product away afterward without access to a hose, especially around the brake calliper…
