World first: McMurtry Spéirling hypercar drives upside down from stationary

Images are for editorial use only. In stunning world first, McMurtry Spéirling becomes the first car to drive upside down Records tumble as Spéirling claims Top Gear Test Track outright record, to add to Goodwood Festival of Speed and Laguna Seca Hillclimb records Customer deliveries of all-electric hypercar scheduled for 2026; 100 to be made Proprietary Downforce-on-DemandTM fan system enabled upside-down driving Special edition livery used as tribute to McMurtry’s first ever fan car from 2021 Watch the video here In a stunning world first, McMurtry Automotive has driven its record-breaking Spéirling hyper track car upside down. Thomas Yates, Co-founder & Managing Director of McMurtry Automotive used the British hypercar’s proprietary fan system which produces Downforce-on-DemandTM, to ‘suck’ the hypercar to the ‘floor’ of a specially-built rotating rig. The technology demonstration took place at McMurtry’s headquarters in Gloucestershire, England and was attended by employees and independent adjudicators. This monumental feat is yet another record-breaking outing for the Spéirling. Today, it was also announced that the same vehicle has also smashed the Top Gear Test Track record by 3.1 seconds. The previous record holder was a V10 Renault R24 Formula 1 racecar from 2004. It also holds the Goodwood Festival of Speed Hillclimb outright record and the Laguna Seca Corkskrew Hillclimb record. The McMurtry Spéirling is a British-built, single-seat, electric hypercar that operates in a league of its own. It was envisioned by one of Britain’s most successful businessmen, the billionaire and prolific inventor Sir David McMurtry, who passed away in December. McMurtry Automotive continues his legacy with a small, agile team of talented and creative engineers. Thomas Yates, Co-founder & Managing Director of McMurtry Automotive, commented: “That was just a fantastic day in the office! Strapping in and driving inverted was a completely surreal experience. The 2000kg of downforce that the fan system can generate is truly astonishing to experience and it’s great to show the reason why our Spéirling continues to take records around the world.” “This demonstration was an exciting proof of concept using a small purpose-built rig, but is perhaps just the beginning of what’s possible. With a longer inverted track or a suitable tunnel, we may be able to drive even further! Huge congratulations and thanks to the entire McMurtry Automotive team, especially the engineers involved in the car and fan system’s design, they are the heroes of today. ” How is it possible? It has long been discussed that high-performance race cars, such as those used in Formula 1, could theoretically be driven upside down. This is due to the amount of downforce that they generate at speed. However, it has never been attempted. Equipped with McMurtry’s patented Downforce-on-DemandTM system, the Spéirling can accelerate, brake, and turn with significantly more grip than other hypercars and racecars, especially at low speed. Importantly, this downforce is available at any speed, even at a standstill. Other hypercars and racecars can only produce downforce at high speeds using aerodynamic surfaces. During the record attempt, Thomas Yates drove the Spéirling up a ramp and onto a purpose-built platform. The floor of the platform then rotated, fully inverting the hypercar. The Downforce-on-DemandTM system created a sufficient vacuum underneath the hypercar’s floor to hold it upside down, exceeding the force of gravity. Once fully inverted, Thomas drove forward, entirely unsupported. This proprietary system also enables the battery-electric hypercar to accelerate to 60mph in just 1.5 seconds, complete a quarter mile in 8 seconds, and corner at more than 3g (three times the force of gravity). The car was presented with a gloss black falcon camouflage livery on a matt black base coat. This is a tribute to the original McMurtry fan car which was unveiled in 2021 at the Goodwood Festival of Speed where the public first asked “So can you drive it upside down?”. The falcons are modelled on the company logo, the peregrine falcon, the fastest creature on Earth. There are other graphics including under the rear wing, which are optimised for viewing when upside down. From prototype to productionThe specific car used to set this record is the McMurtry Spéirling PURE Validation Prototype 1 (VP1). It is an evolution of the hypercar that set the Goodwood record and is the next step towards a finalised production model, of which only 100 will be made. The first Spéirling PURE customer deliveries are set for 2026 and will feature a number of enhancements over this prototype, namely a higher 100kWh capacity battery back. This will allow for extended sessions in the Spéirling, providing 20 minutes of track time at ‘GT3 pace’ and ‘record-breaking’ pace for multiple hot laps. The lithium-ion battery cells that will be used are P50B Molicel 21700s delivering both exceptional power delivery and energy density. SafetyWhile the stunt may appear dangerous, the Spéirling is built to the rigorous motorsport safety standards of LMP1 cars – the fastest cars at the world-famous Le Mans 24 Hours. In track and racing conditions, the downforce produced by the Spéirling also plays a vital safety role. As downforce levels are unrelated to speed or direction of travel, testing has demonstrated that if a driver enters a spin or other uncontrolled manoeuvre, the amount of grip and downforce available means that application of the brakes will often see them stop almost immediately, often while still on the tarmac. As the official auction partner of BMW AG for the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, Broad Arrow is offering 70 of the market’s most collectible cars for sale on the shores of Lake Como. The cars on offer span the most desirable categories of the collector car market, from coachbuilt classics to racing icons and supercars with rare provenance and desirability. “We are honoured to present some of the most collectible supercars of modern times at our Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este auction,” says Joe Twyman, VP of Sales for Broad Arrow’s EMEA Region. “The chance to auction the very first Lamborghini Diablo VT 6.0 is a very special moment for us. This iconic supercar has the incredible provenance of being the first Diablo VT 6.0 off the hallowed production line at Sant’Agata Bolognese and was the car reviewed by the world’s top motoring publications. We are expecting considerable interest from Lamborghini collectors around the world for what is a very desirable example of the marque.” 2000 Lamborghini Diablo VT 6.0 (Estimate: €500.000 – €600.000)Broad Arrow is delighted to present for auction, the very first Lamborghini Diablo VT 6.0 to leave the famous production line at Sant’Agata Bolognese. Like the Countach, the Diablo was revered worldwide for its wedge-shaped design, incredible performance and superb engineering. The Diablo VT 6.0 was the swansong for the Diablo, with the original Marcello Gandini design evolved by Luc Donckerwolke to create an even more dramatic presence on the road. It gained Viscous Traction (VT) all-wheel drive, an increase in power and torque and its impressive performance numbers showed it to be quicker than its major rival, the Ferrari 360 Modena. Carbon fibre was used more extensively inside and out and most noticeably, the pop-up headlights of the Diablo were replaced by fixed units to further improve aerodynamic performance. Chassis number 12293 is a very special example of this iconic supercar. Resplendent in Giallo Orion yellow, it was produced for the Italian market where it was initially utilised by Lamborghini for media and marketing and featured in many of the top international motoring publications. It was subsequently sold to its current, and only, private owner in Germany who has meticulously maintained this desirable bull, including a major overhaul of the 542hp 6.0-litre V12 engine in 2015. This very historically significant Lamborghini is supplied with a Certificate of Vehicle Original Configuration and is a noteworthy addition to any automobile collection. 2003 Honda NSX-R (Estimate: €750.000 – €950.000)The Honda NSX was one of the most respected supercars of its era, combining the impressive quality and reliability that Honda is renowned worldwide for, with head-turning looks and superb performance. The NSX-R was the ultimate version and very rarely becomes available in the collector car market. The NSX-R was created to respond to increasing levels of performance by contemporary Italian sports car manufacturers and it delivered a convincing answer to its rivals. Its 3.2-litre VTEC V6 engine delivers 290hp and provided Ferrari-matching pace on the notorious Nürburgring track. This rare example is finished in what is likely the most desirable colour of Championship White and features an interior trimmed in red Alcantara upholstery. It has been meticulously maintained by its owner in Sweden and has travelled only 15,806km in its lifetime. Just 140 second generation NSX-R models were produced by Honda, making this a worthy addition to any supercar collection. 2022 Lamborghini Countach LPI 800-4 (Estimate: €2.300.000 – €2.500.000)The Lamborghini Countach is undeniably one of the greatest supercars of all time. In 2022 Lamborghini Centro Sile celebrated the illustrious history of the Marcello Gandini-designed model by creating a modern interpretation, the Countach LPI 800-4. Based on the Aventador and designed by Lamborghini’s chief designer, Mitja Borkert, only 112 examples were produced, all featuring significant nods to the original, such as the frontal wedge shape, distinctive pentagonal wheel arches and the glazed roof panel that hints at the periscope system of the original Countach. The advanced hybrid powertrain includes a 769hp V12 engine and a 34hp electric motor to give it a combined output of 803hp and a 0-100km/h time of only 2.8 seconds. This particular example, chassis 11340, features Arancio Buciato exterior paintwork and an interior trimmed in Bianco Polar and Nero Ade, and is in pristine condition with only 6,170km on the odometer. Options fitted include a Carbon Package and black Sian-style wheels, which perfectly complement the incredible performance of this 769hp V12 hybrid supercar and makes it one of the most collectible Lamborghinis of the modern era. 2023 Ford GT (Estimate: €525.000 – €625.000)The return of the GT to the Ford stable has proven to be a remarkable success for the American automaker. The design is a true homage to the original Ford GT40, although with 660hp from the 3.5-litre V6 engine, performance is significantly more with a 0-100km/h time of only 3.0 seconds. This desirable supercar is finished in Heritage Blue with Frozen White stripes and a Dark Energy interior package. Options include 20-inch Gloss Black forged aluminum wheels and a stainless-steel exhaust system. Produced for an Italian collector, it boasts delivery mileage of just 53km. “The Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este is renowned for its display of highly collectible classic cars and what better way to celebrate the true classics of the future than by presenting these incredible supercars,” says Twyman.…

The new facility will boost production efficiency, improve product quality, and strengthen MOKE’s ability to meet the growing global demand for its Electric MOKE. With production targets exceeding 500 units this year for markets including the USA and the Mediterranean, MOKE continues to contribute to the UK economy as a net exporter. Earlier this month, MOKE International hosted an exclusive reveal event, attended by retail partners from Europe, Middle East and the USA, along with Labour MP for Warwick and Leamington, Matt Western, Chair of the APPG on Electric Vehicles. The event celebrated British engineering and MOKE’s growing international presence. The new Leamington Spa facility reflects the company’s commitment to British engineering and innovation in the EV sector. The company has created dozens of new clean-tech jobs as part of the expansion, and has tripled its workforce. At the open day, MOKE unveiled a range of new colourway options for body, Bimini, and wheels, expanding the range of choices for customers. These updates reinforce the company’s focus on sustainability, style and innovation. Nick English, Executive Chairman at MOKE International, said: “It’s great to be bringing back production to the UK, and indeed the car manufacturing heartland in the Midlands, where the MOKE was originally designed by Sir Alec Issigonis. As we now celebrate 60 years of MOKE, we are thrilled to be marking such an exciting chapter, enhancing our craftsmanship and innovation while laying the foundation for future success.” Discussing the factory opening in Leamington Spa, Matt Western, MP for Warwick and Leamington, “I was delighted to visit MOKE International in Leamington earlier this month and see first-hand the innovation that has and continues to go into the Electric MOKE. “It is excellent to see the creation of new jobs in the EV sector which will continue to grow and hear of the company’s commitment to working with local suppliers in the production of the vehicles. I am looking forward to seeing MOKE International continue to grow and succeed and am confident that Leamington Spa will provide an ideal home for this growth and success.” This investment in British manufacturing also represents a commitment to people. MOKE’s expansion has created dozens of new roles across production, engineering, quality, supply chain, and aftersales support. A key focus now is on developing home-grown talent through apprenticeship and graduate schemes, supporting the future EV workforce, and contributing to the UK economy. The new facility is also a strategic step in MOKE International’s long-term vision. With significant investments in safety, homologation, and country-specific compliance, the Electric MOKE is now available in the USA, Mexico, France, Spain & the Balearic Islands, Italy, and soon, Greece. The vehicle has achieved M1 Small Series Approval, EPA Certification, and CARB approval, making it the first EV from a low-volume manufacturer to achieve this distinction and enabling MOKE International to sell in all 50 US states. Sustainability remains a core focus for MOKE International, with approximately 70 per cent of the Electric MOKE’s components sourced from Europe. This places MOKE among the few independently owned car manufacturers to achieve this distinction. Additionally, MOKE has been invited to join Walpole the prestigious governing body for the UK’s luxury goods sector, further cementing its reputation for best-of-British craftsmanship. More than Equal: can Drag Racing help find a female F1 champion?

Images are for editorial use only. Santa Pod Raceway’s approaching Easter weekend event, the Festival of Speed (18-20 April), offers a timely reminder to the motorsport world about female participation. Of 312 drivers and riders entered for the race, 55 are women or girls. David Coulthard’s organisation More than Equal is dedicated to crowning a female Formula 1 world champion. Could a different form of motorsport help light the way? More than Equal recently undertook a study into drag racing to learn how its long-standing tradition of gender-equal competition might be invoked for the benefit of circuit racing, and of F1 in particular. The study was conducted in Europe and the USA and the introduction below contains a link to the report. NEW RESEARCH BY MORE THAN EQUAL UNVEILS DRAG RACING’S BLUEPRINT FOR GENDER PARITY More than Equal, in collaboration with Santa Pod Raceway and Women in Motorsports North America (WIMNA), releases a comprehensive white paper highlighting the lessons other motorsports can learn from Drag Racing’s success in female representation. LONDON, December 10, 2024: More than Equal, a global motorsport initiative with a mission to find and develop the first female F1 world champion, has partnered with Santa Pod Raceway, Europe’s premier drag racing venue, and Women in Motorsports North America (WIMNA) to launch a landmark white paper examining Drag Racing’s leadership in gender inclusivity. The report, titled “It’s Never Been A Thing: Lessons in Gender Equality from Drag Racing,” showcases the unique environment, cultural values, and structural advantages that have enabled drag racing to become the most gender-equal motorsport in the world. Female drivers in drag racing not only compete but consistently achieve at the highest levels, a rarity in motorsport, where women make up only 4% of elite competitors across disciplines. This year, Drag Racing celebrated its 100th female event winner in the NHRA series, a significant milestone. The comprehensive white paper sheds light on how the sport achieved this and offers a roadmap for others to follow. The collaboration highlights that while motorsport remains predominantly male, some disciplines achieve greater gender balance, offering valuable lessons to apply across the sport. “It’s Never Been A Thing: Lessons in Gender Equality from Drag Racing” highlights six primary themes that help explain why and how Drag Racing has achieved excellence in female representation, including collaborative advocacy, cultural and structural advocacy, elite-level representation and engineering excellence to name a few. In addition, icons like Shirley Muldowney and Paula Murphy paved the way in the 1960s and 1970s, inspiring subsequent generations of female drivers who now dominate in categories like Top Fuel and Pro Stock. The white paper emphasises strategies other motorsports can adopt to close their gender gaps, including expanding talent development pipelines, promoting female role models, developing accessible entry points, and removing financial barriers. “This research underscores More than Equal’s commitment to leveraging data and insights to drive meaningful change in motorsport,” said Dr. Fran Longstaff, Head of Research at More than Equal. “By understanding what has worked in disciplines like Drag Racing, we can equip the drivers in our development programme with the knowledge and tools they need to overcome barriers and succeed at the highest levels. Collaborating with motorsports that have achieved gender parity is crucial to creating a more inclusive future for all drivers.” The findings in the report are based on More than Equal’s multi-faceted research approach designed to uncover the key factors behind Drag Racing’s exceptional rates of female representation. To ensure a well-rounded understanding, the study included extensive desk research, stakeholder interviews, and firsthand on-track observations. Richard Foster-Turner, Business Development Manager, Santa Pod Raceway / Trakbak Racing said: “It’s been decades since gender became a non-issue in Drag Racing. Our participants consider themselves purely racers. Nobody outside Drag Racing has been talking about this, but now with this white paper we are putting Drag Racing’s gender-equal credentials out there to stimulate discussion and follow-on research, and to help other motorsports work towards the same level of diversity.” Cindy Sisson, Executive Director, WIMNA added: “It has been an honour for WIMNA to participate in this study, as we have always admired the NHRA’s groundbreaking approach to promoting women in racing. From trailblazers like Paula Murphy and Shirley Muldowney, who shattered stereotypes and proved that women can not only compete at the highest levels but also dominate as champions, the NHRA has consistently led the charge in fostering gender equity in motorsports. These pioneers paved the way for future generations, and WIMNA is proud to continue building on this legacy by supporting and empowering women to achieve greatness on and off the track. Together, we celebrate the ongoing progress and reaffirm our commitment to ensuring that motorsports remain a space where everyone can thrive and succeed.” The “It’s Never Been A Thing: Lessons in Gender Equality from Drag Racing” white paper is available for download at bit.ly/mtedragracing. ### ABOUT MORE THAN EQUALMore than Equal is a global, independent motorsport initiative with a mission to find and develop the first female Formula 1 world champion.
