Now available to order in Sportback and Avant body styles, the first phase of A6 e-tron variants is priced from £69,900 (MDP) and £71,700 (MDP) respectively, and their 550PS S6 e-tron equivalents from £97,500 (MDP) and £99,300 (MDP). The new arrivals share their state-of-the-art Premium Platform Electric (PPE) foundations with the recently launched Q6 e-tron, and are products of the same single-minded pursuit of exceptional performance, range, efficiency, and charging capability. Like many familiar series production Audi models, the new A6 e-tron Sportback and Avant closely resemble the innovatively styled show cars that preceded them, in this case the A6 e-tron concepts, which debuted at the Auto Shanghai show in 2021. Their low, arcing rooflines and clean-cut contours are complemented by a distinctive frontal black mask integrating slimline headlamps, trademark quattro blisters and a continuous, three-dimensional rear light strip, helping to create a form that is dynamic, futuristic and outstandingly aerodynamic. The most aerodynamic Audi in historyThe exhaustive streamlining work carried out on the new A6 e-tron models by Audi aerodynamicists is reflected in the A6 e-tron Sportback’s achievement of an exceptionally low drag coefficient of 0.21, distinguishing it not only as the most aerodynamic series production Audi of all time, but also the most aerodynamic vehicle in the entire VW Group. The Avant’s value of 0.24 also stands as one of the best in the segment. To capitalise on that aerodynamic efficiency, the new A6 and S6 e-tron Sportback and Avant models combine powerful, compact electric motors with a 100 kWh (94.9 kWh net) lithium-ion battery newly developed for the PPE. The first launch phase in the UK will comprise the A6 Sportback e-tron performance and A6 Avant e-tron performance, delivering 380PS (with launch control) from a single rear-mounted motor driving the rear wheels. The S6 Sportback e-tron and S6 Avant e-tron feature a motor on each axle channelling a total of 550PS (with launch control) to quattro all-wheel-drive. Additional variants will follow later in the cycle. These impressive outputs translate into rapid 0-62mph sprint times of 5.4 seconds for both A6 e-tron performance variants, and 3.9 seconds (with launch control) for the two S6 e-tron models, and where conditions allow, they facilitate governed maximum speeds of 130mph and 149mph respectively. Aided by their airflow-optimised bodies, A6 Sportback e-tron and Avant e-tron performance models are capable of impressive maximum driving ranges of up to 463 miles and 437 miles respectively, depending on version. Their S6 counterparts also demonstrate impressive staying power despite their significant performance advantage, the S6 Sportback e-tron covering up to 405 miles and the S6 Avant e-tron 388 miles. Thanks to 800-volt technology and a maximum DC charging capacity of 270 kW, the new A6 and S6 e-tron models are also impressively brisk when the time comes to restore their ample ranges. Using an HPC fast-charger, the A6 Sportback e-tron performance can replenish enough power for up to 192 miles in just 10 minutes, and from a 10% base can reinstate 80% of its capacity in 21 minutes. An advanced recuperation system, which recuperates at up to 220kW and is active in 95% of all everyday braking processes, also helps to harvest energy that would otherwise dissipate, while a standard heat pump helps to maximise efficiency by using the unavoidable waste heat from the electric motors for interior heating and air conditioning. Maximum comfort guaranteed Sophisticated five-link front and rear suspension delivers comfort, control and composure in the A6 e-tron performance models, enabling drivers to take full advantage of their impressive pace. S6 e-tron versions with rear-biased all-wheel drive are further enhanced by adaptive air suspension with controlled damping, which adapts to specific road conditions and positions the body’s ride height at four different levels. In the Audi drive select system’s efficiency mode, it lowers the body by 20mm (depending on speed) in the interest of aerodynamics, helping to optimise energy consumption and driving range. Travellers in the new A6 e-tron and S6 e-tron models enjoy the rapid but unruffled progress in exceptional surroundings. The interior cocoons occupants in great comfort thanks to its enveloping ‘soft wrap’, which extends from door to door across the entire panel width. The digital hub for all models is the Audi Multi Media Interface (MMI) panoramic display, its curved design incorporating the 11.9-inch Audi virtual cockpit and the 14.5-inch MMI touch screen. MMI navigation plus, Audi connect internet-based services, the Audi smartphone interface and wireless smartphone charging are naturally standard features across the range. A390_β: Alpine to present the show car for its first-ever electric sport fastback

On 11 October 2024, Alpine will exclusively unveil on its media website the A390_β show car, the forerunner of the brand’s future sport fastback, of which production will begin in Dieppe in 2025. This new model will join Alpine’s 100% electric Dream Garage alongside the A290, its hot hatch that went on sale this summer. The A390_β aligns with Alpine’s terminology, combining an A and three numbers. The 3 refers to the vehicle’s size, and the 90 refers to the brand’s versatile and everyday use vehicles. HORSE partners with Marcopolo to develop new hybrid microbus

Volare Attack 9 is the first hybrid ethanol microbus with a Range Extender solution, developed in a partnership between Marcopolo, HORSE and WEG Range Extender powertrain will be powered by bioethanol fuel to provide superior emissions profile to traditional hybrid electric vehicles HORSE, a division of HORSE Powertrain Limited and a global leader in innovative and low-emission powertrain systems, has partnered with Marcopolo, the largest bus manufacturer in South America, and WEG, the Brazilian multinational manufacturer of electronic equipment, to develop the new Volare Attack 9 hybrid microbus. This new vehicle is the first hybrid ethanol microbus to make use of a Range Extender solution, and was presented at the Marcopolo stand at Lat.Bus 2024 Expo. Targeted to go on sale in 2026, the Volare Attack 9 will offer a maximum range of 450km. Like most new vehicles in Brazil, the combustion engine will be fuelled by sustainable and domestically produced bioethanol, meaning that it will offer carbon neutral mobility for customers and operators. Patrice Haettel, Chief Executive Officer at HORSE, said: “This Range Extender solution in the Volare Attack 9 is the result of an incredible collaboration between HORSE, WEG, and Marcopolo. We hope this will be the start of what will be a range of sustainable solutions using this technology to debut in the region and beyond.” Building Brazilian partnershipsAs the first ethanol-powered hybrid minibus to use a Range Extender solution, the Volare Attack 9 hybrid features a low-emission powertrain specifically tailored for the model. The success of the project has led HORSE and WEG to plan to further launch a standardised Range Extender architecture for light and heavy commercial vehicles. HORSE’s Range Extenders use WEG components for the powertrain’s electric generators, e-motors, electrical inverters, and battery packs. For the Range Extender’s combustion engine, the powertrain will use HORSE’s 85kW turbo 1.0-litre, three-cylinder ‘HR10’ unit. This engine is adapted to run on clean, carbon-neutral bioethanol. HORSE’s Range ExtenderHORSE’s own market-leading Range Extender technology offers the benefits of decarbonised mobility at scale. These powertrains, like plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), make use of both combustion engines and batteries to provide flexible, low-emissions transport. However, unlike PHEVs, the combustion engine of HORSE’s Range Extenders never directly drives the vehicle’s wheels – instead, it only serves as an internal charging source for the vehicle’s battery. This means that the combustion engine of a Range Extender vehicle, unlike a traditional PHEV, can constantly operate in its high-efficiency operating window and rev range. This minimises fuel consumption and emissions associated with the powertrain’s combustion engine. Like a traditional PHEV, the Range Extender’s combustion engine can be turned on or off depending on remaining battery charge and location, and the battery can be charged using any public charger or domestic power supply. Because of the efficiency of the architecture, the Range Extender’s high-voltage battery is around half the size of a pure EV battery. This means both significant cost and weight savings, while also offering improved flexibility of packaging for enhanced efficiency. Melexis introduces digital output Triphibian™ pressure sensor

Tessenderlo, Belgium, 10 September 2024 – Melexis expands its TriphibianTM family with the MLX90834 pressure sensor, designed for automotive applications such as EV thermal management. This robust, factory-calibrated MEMS solution accurately measures pressure in both gas and liquid media from 2 to 70 bar. Its digital SENT output delivers absolute pressure information, diagnostic and temperature data, enabling enhanced system performance and reliability. At the heart of the MLX90834 is Melexis’ ground-breaking TriphibianTM technology. This innovative MEMS sensor design allows for accurate pressure measurements in both gas and liquid media, even at pressures up to 70 bar. This versatility is achieved through a unique construction featuring a suspended cantilever with a diaphragm at its tip, all housed within a compact SO16 package. Heat pump systems require careful monitoring of both the pressure and temperature of the refrigerant. To prevent damaging the most expensive component in the system, it is critical to prevent liquid media from getting at the inlet of the compressor. For that purpose, the system must ensure that the refrigerant is always in a superheated gas state when reaching the outlet of the evaporator. This is achieved by precisely monitoring the pressure and temperature at the same spot between the evaporator and compressor, allowing the system to accurately calculate and regulate the degree of superheat of the fluid by using smart expansion valves. The implementation of a triphibian sensor utilizing digital SENT allows the system to obtain precise pressure and temperature data. The MLX90834 can interface with external NTCs and the provided factory calibration achieves an accuracy better than ±1oC in extended temperature ranges. The accurate pressure measurement is used to derive the equivalent temperature of the media when present in saturation (= co-existence of liquid and gas in the evaporator) while the NTC provides the actual temperature of the fluid, with the difference between the two corresponding to the amount of superheat achieved in the fluid. Smart expansion valves significantly benefit from the MLX90834’s features. By embedding this digital sensor within heat pump components like valves, manufacturers can create more intelligent valves with edge computing capabilities. Leveraging Melexis’ expertise in both sensing and driving technologies, Melexis’ motor driver ICs can be used to process data from the MLX90834. This allows heat pump manufacturers to integrate system regulation directly into their components, enhancing their value proposition. Ultimately, these intelligent, locally controlled expansion valves, with their increased accuracy in pressure and temperature sensing, enable heat pump systems to operate with less overheating, leading to improved overall efficiency. The MLX90834 includes a sensor readout circuit, digital hardware, voltage regulators, and digital output drivers. Piezo-resistive elements implanted into the membrane create a Wheatstone bridge to generate an input signal. This signal is amplified and converted into a digital format, allowing the 16-bit Digital Signal Processing (DSP) to apply temperature compensation before providing the result as a digital output (SENT). The sensor is equipped with advanced protective mechanisms against overvoltage (above +40 V) and reverse voltage (below -40 V), making it suitable for automotive and truck applications. The 2024 Salon Privé Concours presented by Aviva Private Clients was won by a fabulous 1957 Ferrari 335 S, entered by American enthusiast Brian Ross. The Maranello sports racer thrilled onlookers when it took part in the Tour Privé on Tuesday, 27 August, and it proved to be just as popular with the expert judging panel when it appeared on the Concours Show Field the following day. “We are truly delighted with this year’s Best of Show 1957 Ferrari 335 S by Scaglietti,” said Andrew Bagley, the Salon Privé Concours Chairman. “You only have to look at the great names who raced it to realise how significant a sports car it was and appreciate what a cherished place it holds in Ferrari history. This beautiful Ferrari competed in a golden period of sports-car racing, and we all now look forward to its entry into the Peninsula Classics Best of the Best Award 2025.” The Judges ‘Rarity and Elegance Award’ was presented to owner Albert Hitchcock for his superb 1971 Monteverdi High-Speed 375L by Fizzore, with this stunning model entering the Post-War Closed Class. A unique Australian beauty, it is only one of nine made in right-hand drive, having been displayed at the Quail in Monterey in 2019, where it won its Class. While the Salon Privé Concours took centre stage at Blenheim Palace, the South Lawn was full of a spectacular array of new cars, with many making their UK and world debuts. Those included the remarkable Tuthill GT ONE making its UK debut just days after it was revealed for the first time to global acclaim during Monterey Car Week. Landing at Salon Privé directly from The Quail, it was a real homecoming for this remarkable homage to 1990s FIA GT1 racing cars for Le Mans, with Porsche specialist, Tuthill based in nearby Banbury – where the GT ONE was conceived. The Tuthill GT ONE is a road-going car with a full carbon fibre body designed by California’s Florian Flatau. Just 22 cars will be built, each requiring 3,500 hours of meticulous build time. Owners have a choice of specifications, including either a naturally aspirated 4.0-litre six-cylinder engine, producing over 500bhp – or a turbocharged version producing over 600bhp. From car to cloud: Volvo Cars expands collaboration with NVIDIA

We’re guided by our technology roadmap: by striking a balance between in-house development and smart partnerships with global tech leaders, so that we can work with both speed and the latest, cutting-edge technology. The new Volvo EX90 is the first Volvo car to be truly software-defined – it’s built on a centralised core compute architecture, made possible through our long-standing collaboration with NVIDIA. The EX90’s industry-leading core computing system is powered by an NVIDIA DRIVE Orin system-on-a-chip (SoC), which is capable of more than 250 trillion operations per second (TOPS). This core compute system orchestrates everything in the car: from powering the deep learning capabilities underpinning our AI-based active safety and driving-assistance systems to helping introduce safe autonomous driving in the future and delivering best-in-class customer experience. To help unleash the full potential of our software-defined car with a centralised core compute architecture, we’re taking our collaboration with NVIDIA to the next level. Later this decade, we will introduce cars built on NVIDIA DRIVE Thor, which is capable of up to 1,000 TOPS. That’s four times as many operations per second as one DRIVE Orin SoC, while offering seven times greater energy efficiency. Integrating DRIVE Thor will help further future-proof our next generation of cars. DRIVE Thor, which integrates the NVIDIA Blackwell GPU architecture, will enable us to deploy even more advanced driving-assistance and safety features, develop autonomous driving, and introduce generative AI-based capabilities and in-car experiences. “With NVIDIA DRIVE Thor in our future cars, our in-house-developed software becomes more scalable across our product line-up, which will help us to continue to improve the safety in our cars, deliver best-in-class customer experiences, reduce our costs and increase our margins,” says Jim Rowan, CEO of Volvo Cars. To further explore the potential of AI, Volvo Cars, through its fully owned software company, Zenseact, is also using the NVIDIA DGX systems – an AI supercomputing platform optimised for large workloads – to help develop safe autonomous driving. The DGX systems for AI model training will be used before deploying to our future fleets on the road. With the power of the NVIDIA DGX platform – utilising its purpose-built AI infrastructure and optimised software stack – we can enhance the efficiency of training both current and future AI models. Our long-standing collaboration with NVIDIA, and our use of the production-proven NVIDIA DRIVE platform, has enabled us to further explore and apply our deep understanding of safety as we train large foundation AI models. On Volvo Cars’ Capital Markets Day, held today in Gothenburg, Sweden, we revealed our new, game-changing approach to technology. This new approach will define the company’s future by channeling all our engineering efforts into one direction: making cars that get better with time. Starting with the EX90, our future electric cars will be based on the same fundamental core of systems, modules, software and hardware, called the Volvo Cars Superset tech stack. It’s a single tech and software base that contains all modules and functionalities that we will use in our future product line-up. Like a set of building blocks, it can be configured in many different ways. Each of our new cars will be a selection, or a subset, of building blocks from the Superset tech stack, and we will continuously improve and grow the tech stack. This approach makes sure that our cars truly get better with time, as all our engineering work will focus on improving and enhancing the one tech stack. It means that our work on the EX90 will directly benefit the ES90, and that the work done for the ES90 will carry on – both into the development of the EX60 coming after it, as well as improving the EX90 already in the hands of our customers, and so on. “The Volvo Cars Superset tech stack is a true game changer: it allows all of our engineering effort to be channeled into one single direction that powers all our products, instead of working on specific car projects,” says Anders Bell, Chief Engineering and Technology Officer at Volvo Cars. “Our engineers will work on one superset, constantly improving, growing and expanding its capabilities and features. This allows for dramatically improved quality, increased speed to market and continually better cars for our customers.” Closed-loop development The Superset tech stack approach, which enables us to deliver one brand in many different product flavours, is emblematic of our overarching idea of how to make cars. We now do closed-loop development based on data, connectivity, software and core computing. This shift to core computing is at least as significant as the shift to electrification. It impacts anything connected to the cars’ electrical system, and the potential benefits are limitless. By creating a closed-loop development process we will be able to endlessly and relentlessly improve every aspect of our cars, thanks to real-time insight and advanced compute capabilities inside our cars, as well as by our engineers in our development centres. Our next-generation SPA3 platform One of the key building blocks for any of our cars is the electric technology base: a combination of the latest propulsion, electric and electronic systems on top of which the car is built. To put ourselves in a position to become leaders in next-generation mobility, we’re developing a new electric technology base, called SPA3, which will be underpinned by the Volvo Cars Superset tech stack. Our first car to be built on SPA3 will be the forthcoming all-electric EX60 mid-size SUV. SPA3 builds on many of the building blocks of SPA2 and introduces several key upgrades. It will, for example, have an enhanced core computing capability, which will allow us to secure higher performance and improve features through our tech stack. But the most important change is that the SPA3 architecture has been built to be far more scalable than its predecessor. This means that, if we wanted, we could continuously develop and build cars of all sizes – larger than the EX90 and smaller than the EX30 – using the same technology base. The modularity and upgradeability of SPA3 will allow for lower investment costs – with lower variance as well – in relation to sales, which in turn should lead to a stronger future cash flow. Lower production costs By having a scalable SPA3 architecture, we create increased synergies and improve technology efficiency when it comes to core computing, batteries, e-motors, megacasting and modular manufacturing – all factors that contribute to significantly driving down the costs of producing cars. Our Torslanda plant and its preparation for production of SPA3 cars showcase our approach to future manufacturing, with all capabilities needed to produce a car located in the same area. This approach becomes especially powerful when we’re able to use the same key components across all cars built on SPA3, meaning that complexity goes down and flexibility goes up.
