78% women drivers consider aggression on the roads to be a serious problem

WWCOTY celebrates International Women Drivers’ Day on June 24th by drawing attention to women drivers’ perspective concerning behaviour. According to a recent survey, a total of 78% women drivers consider aggression on the roads as a serious problem. June 2024 – Women’s Worldwide Car of the Year celebrates June 24th, International Women Drivers’ Day by drawing attention to women drivers’ perspective concerning behaviour. A survey led by Czech online magazine Zena v aute.cz for women drivers contacted 1,485 female drivers worldwide in an online questionnaire. It revealed that 78% of women drivers consider aggression on the roads to be a serious problem and 69% respondents think that aggressive behaviour on the roads has been increasing. The survey was carried out during May 2024 in 20 countries around the world (Australia, Austria, Belgium, Columbia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, India, Italy, New Zealand, Pakistan, Poland, Serbia, Spain, Switzerland, UK, and USA). The expert advisor of the survey was Platforma Vize0. “Through a questionnaire we analyzed how women-drivers feel, what they fear, how they behave behind the wheel, and on roads. The results of the survey are remarkable,” says Sabina Kvášová, Jury of the Czech Republic and editor-in-chief of the magazine Zena v aute.cz, conductor of the survey. Concerns while drivingWhat are women drivers afraid of when driving? According to the study, there are three main topics about which women drivers have concerns: aggressive drivers (22%), accidents (20%) and driving in reduced visibility (20%), followed by skidding (13%) and collision with animals (9%). About 16% of those interviewed think there is to worry about. It is interesting to look at answers that vary from country to country. For example, aggressive drivers as a main concern while driving was mostly stated by respondents from USA (82%), Spain (31%) and Poland (38%). Accidents as a main fear was represented in answers from Italy (51%), Poland (35%) and Germany (31%). Driving in reduced visibility is a subject of concern mainly for women drivers from UK (52%), Germany (50%) and Poland (20%). The survey revealed that 78% of women drivers consider aggression on the roads as a serious problem and 69% respondents think that aggressive behaviour on the roads has been increasing. A survey organizer and member of the WWCOTY jury, Sabina Kvasova stated that the majority of women drivers worldwide sporadically encounter (55%) aggressive behaviour on the roads. Only 25% of respondents encounter aggressive behaviour every day, 20% several times a week. What women drivers proposeWhen asked what measures should be taken against aggressors, women drivers worldwide support mainly strict penalties (45%), specialized psychological therapy program (27%), training of future drivers (20%) and prevention campaigns (6%). Looking at specific countries, strict penalties against aggressive drivers are supported by women drivers profoundly in Denmark and Serbia (97%), followed by USA (54%) and Italy (50%). Obligation to undergo a specialised psychological therapy program for drivers and subsequent psychological assessment of a driver’s mental abilities have a strong support in Denmark a Serbia (97%), USA (54%) and in Poland as well as in Columbia (50%). Future drivers must be made aware of the risks associated with aggressiveness on the roads during their training – as a proposed measure is backed in the UK (43%), Italy (42%), Spain (30%). Prevention campaigns on the dangers of aggression were mainly stated in the answers of respondents from USA (45%), Poland (37%) and Germany (24%). With this study, the Women’s Worldwide Car of the Year aims to publicize women driver’s perspective concerning driving behaviour. International Women Drivers’ Day, a day that vindicates mobility as an inalienable right that contributes to the freedom, dignity, and personal and professional development of women, is the perfect organization to highlight this survey. Driving opens the door to independence for millions of women around the world to seek a better future, to achieve fairer living conditions, and to pursue their passion for motorsports. Today, women influence more than 80% of car purchases in advanced countries. This number will continue or grow in the coming years. “The percentage of young women university students is already higher in developed countries. Salary parity is beginning to be an achievable goal, Boards of Directors are no longer exclusively male, and in the lists of the richest people in the world, it is not unusual to see more and more women’s names,” says Marta García, executive president of WWCOTY. International Women Drivers Day also celebrates amplifying the importance of women expressing their opinions and experiences about cars on social networks. The number of women globally on Instagram is 53.6%, Facebook 44%, LinkedIn 43.7% and TikTok 49.2%. For women, it’s not just about performance and safety, but also about saving the planet through environmental awareness without losing the right to the freedom to come and go where and when you want. International Women Drivers’ Day is cause for reflection. Many women still feel scrutinized by their partners when they drive, use only the second family car, or feel little support in the world of motorsports. That’s why the celebration of International Women Drivers’ Day, an initiative promoted by Women’s World Car of the Year, is more important than ever. A future of sustainable mobility and equality is only possible with the contribution of women. ———– About Women’s Worldwide Car of the Year Women’s Worldwide Car of the Year is the only car awards group in the world comprised exclusively of women motoring journalists. It was created by New Zealand motoring journalist Sandy Myhre in 2009. She is Honorary President while Marta García is Executive President. This unique award aims to recognise the best cars of the year and to give a voice to women in the automotive world. The voting criteria are based on the same principles that guide any driver when choosing a car. The jurors do not select a ‘woman’s car’ because cars are not gender specific. Aspects such as safety, quality, price, design, ease of driving, benefits and environmental footprint, among others, are considered when casting the…

Students from universities in the UK and Qatar spend a week at Bentley’s headquarters in Crewe, England Three-month programme involves one-on-one mentorship sessions with a range of inspirational female Pioneers Pioneers include Sara Davies MBE from BBC One show Dragons’ Den, and Arab Women of the Year Awards winner, Dr Noora Fetais Al Marri (Crewe, 20 June 2024) The third edition of Bentley Motors’ Extraordinary Women initiative has concluded with students from universities in the UK and Qatar spending a week at the luxury car brand’s headquarters in Crewe, England. As part of a specially designed schedule they met with Bentley experts and executives, went behind the scenes of its manufacturing operations and tackled individual tasks. Designed to encourage and develop the next generation of young female leaders, the 2024 edition of the Extraordinary Women programme has seen the students receive one-on-one mentorship over the past three months from a selection of inspirational Pioneers from the fields of technology, engineering, design and business. The students, who passed through a structured selection process focused around these four specific fields, came from a variety of participating universities: including The University of Doha for Science in Technology in Qatar, and the Universities of Bath, Loughborough and Manchester Metropolitan in the UK. Noora Al-Hajri, University of Doha for Science & Technology student, commented:“This experience has been nothing short of life-changing. Through the programme, I have gained invaluable knowledge and skills that will significantly impact my personal and professional growth. The opportunity to learn from inspiring mentors in both Qatar and the UK has been particularly enriching. Their guidance has broadened my horizons, challenged me to think critically, and empowered me to pursue my dreams with renewed confidence. It has been a great honour to meet and engage with such talented young women during their visit – witnessing their energy and ability fills me with great optimism for the future.” Launched in the UK and Middle East in 2022, the Extraordinary Women initiative has previously engaged students and Pioneers from the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and United Kingdom. It forms part of Bentley’s wider commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion under its Beyond100 strategy, and was created to encourage women to explore a variety of career paths in the STEM and automotive sectors.

Gordon Motors celebrates 45 years as a trusted Suzuki dealer

Gordon Motors, a family-run dealership based in Crieff, Scotland, is celebrating a remarkable 45 years with Suzuki GB Plc. Since 1979, Gordon Motors has provided customers across Scotland with reliable Suzuki vehicles and award-winning customer service. The dealership’s story began in a small showroom, where it offered two models; the Suzuki Carry ST80 and the Suzuki LJ80. Due to the success of these models, the decision was made to move to a larger, dedicated Suzuki showroom within the Gordon Motors main dealership. Over the past 45 years, Gordon Motors has evolved considerably. Today, the dealership embraces the future of automobility, including the introduction of electric vehicles, while still remaining true to its core values and continued loyalty to the Suzuki brand. This dedication has been recognised by customers, with Gordon Motors recently being voted as the number one dealer in the UK for both aftersales service and trust. Dale Wyatt, Director Automobile Suzuki GB PLC, said: “We congratulate Gordon and his team on this remarkable milestone. We are thrilled to celebrate 45 years of successful partnership with Gordon Motors. The team’s dedication to the Suzuki brand and outstanding commitment to customer service has been instrumental in their success over the years.’’ Gordon Petrie, Director at Gordon Motors, commented: “We would like to thank Suzuki and our customers for their continued support. I am also providing a special mention to our Service Manager, Ian Lemon, who has been with us for over 20 years and has built an excellent relationship based on trust and product knowledge with our customers.” To find out more about Gordon Motors, please visit, https://cars.suzuki.co.uk/dealers/gordon-motors/.

GWM ORA UK partners with Octopus Electroverse to create scenic English summer charging guide in celebration of Clean Air Day 2024

Scenic holiday charging locations identified to encourage sustainable transport Details the top five chargers to visit in the South of England, a scenic route consisting of 433 miles with a total driving time of around 10 hours After launching 18 months ago, GWM ORA now has 1,500 ORA 03’s on UK roads, saving the equivalent of 2,700 tonnes of CO2 every year* 20/06/24: Online research and data analytics group, YouGov, has found that domestic holidays in the UK will be the most popular option this summer and plenty of Brits will be flooding south to enjoy the warmer climate, quaint villages and scenic coastline. But, with an increase in travel and the continued growth of electrified vehicle adoption, many will be making longer journeys and charging in an EV for the first time. To help support the shift to sustainable transport, GWM ORA and Octopus Electroverse have put together a handy selection of some of the most scenic charging locations to visit in the South of England – just in time for summer. The route starts in the heart of the UK’s capital city, London, then details five stops in charming locations across the South coast of England around Kent, from farm shops to old-school arcades and seaside towns. Drivers can get a coffee, play games and take in the coastal views and fresh, salty sea air while they power up for the next leg of their journey. Automotive and lifestyle content creator, TGE drove part of the 433 mile route in an ORA 03 PRO+ whilst exploring sustainability topics in light of Clean Air Day 2024. Toby Marshall, Managing Director, GWM ORA UK said: “It is so important to shine a positive light on the work that’s being done within the automotive industry to create a greener, healthier and more sustainable environment for all. I believe that now more than ever, consumers are empowered to make that greener choice a reality with the recent advances in electric vehicle technology, charging infrastructure and accessibly priced vehicles like the ORA 03.” The impact of air pollution on the environment and our health is a huge challenge for markets around the world and the UK is no exception. Presently, 79% of the UK exceeds the World Health Organization’s (WHO) annual mean guideline for safe fine particulate matter levels. Additionally, in the last few years, the UK Government reported that cars made up 75% of the road vehicle miles travelled within the UK, producing 57% of transport emissions. Adoption of electric vehicles and charging infrastructure can play a crucial role in lowering road transport emissions and contribute to a healthier, greener UK. This comes as a myriad of EV and charging related myths are being perpetuated online. Through this partnership, GWM ORA and Octopus Electroverse are highlighting how drivers can positively benefit from EVs and simple charging on the Octopus Electroverse charging platform. Octopus Electroverse has quickly grown to be the UK’s largest EV charging platform, making charging on-the-go simple with their ‘one card, one app’ model. Drivers can access around 750,000 chargers from nearly 700 different charge point brands in over 40 countries. Since launching in the UK 18 months ago, GWM ORA has established a strong network of thirty plus retail sites with over 1,500 ORA 03’s now on UK roads. Based on a petrol, similarly sized equivalent car it is estimated that each year 2,700 tonnes* of C02 would be saved, assuming each vehicle travels 8,000km a year. Earlier this year, ORA 03 (previously known as ORA Funky Cat) was awarded top marks by Green NCAP, an independent testing initiative which measures cars on their efficiency and environmental impact. With an average test score of 97% ORA 03 comfortably achieved a 5 star Green rating and has subsequently been announced as the winner of the Green NCAP ‘Small Family Car’ and ‘Full Electric Car’ categories. Additionally, ORA 03 was awarded the Green NCAP ‘Greener Choice’ Life Cycle Assessment Award in 2023, which compares a car’s impact on climate from ‘cradle to grave’ i.e. from when it was manufactured, through its lifetime of usage and, finally, end-of-life treatment. Measured on Green House Gas Emissions and Primary Energy Demand using a default set of parameters, ORA 03 sat on the lower end of the scale, outperforming many of its petrol and BEV counterparts. ORA Funky Cat achieved an average life cycle greenhouse gas emissions of 112.9g CO2/km, with the highest contributor being energy supply which accounted for 49% of the output of climate changing gases.

Making the call that could save a life: new 999 video added to GEM’s Blue Light Aware line-up

What happens if you need to make a 999 call from the roadside Details you should have ready to give the operator New videos explain how to assist an emergency motorcycle and how to stay safe on horseback Road safety and breakdown organisation GEM Motoring Assist today launches a new video explaining how to make a 999 call from the roadside. The video is one of three new titles added to GEM’s selection of Blue Light Aware road safety resources. Making a 999 callGEM road safety adviser James Luckhurst said: “A road collision or incident can be stressful and confusing. Knowing what information to give to the police emergency operator means you’re doing your bit to get help on its way as soon as possible. If someone is seriously hurt then your help could genuinely save a life. “Our short video sets out what initial details you will be asked for, including the location of the incident, how many vehicles are involved, details of any casualties and whether anyone is trapped.” Blue light motorcycleA second new video offers advice on how to assist emergency motorcycles, which are used to respond to a variety of urgent incidents. “They offer many advantages in emergency situations,” said Sgt Dave Bottomley who leads the Metropolitan Police’s motorcycle safety team. “For example, they can often reach casualties quickly in heavy traffic where cars or ambulances may struggle. “If the motorbike is approaching, be ready to slow down and take appropriate steps to help it get through. Its position in the road will usually make clear what the rider wants you to do. Remember not to put yourself in danger or contravene any traffic rules.” The video was produced in partnership with the Metropolitan Police and DocBike. Advice for horse ridersThe third new video offers safety advice for horse riders on the road when an emergency vehicle is approaching. It was produced in collaboration with the British Horse Society. Alan Hiscox, the British Horse Society’s safety director, said: “Emergency drivers will always plan to cancel their sirens when they spot horses and riders on the road ahead. Wearing high viz gives them the best chance of seeing you early – but bear in mind on winding lanes they may not have enough time to switch everything off,” he said. Filming took place recently with the assistance of the Metropolitan Police as well as Surrey Fire and Rescue. About Blue Light AwareBlue Light Aware is the resource for emergency service vehicle awareness on the roads. Based on guidance contained within the Highway Code, Blue Light Aware contains short videos and animations, produced on behalf of the emergency services. Their crews rely on the help of other road users when they’re on a ‘blue light’ journey. To see the new videos, please visit bluelightaware.org.uk. McMurtry Spéirling PURE fan car smashes closed wheel track record at Hockenheim

Running at 75% power and 75% downforce, a lap time of 1.24.43 was achieved at the Dörr Group Trackday at Hockenheimring, Germany, on 8th June 2024. This is the fastest closed-wheel car ever around Hockenheim (3.9s faster than the fastest DTM Qualifying in 2020) and 14.1 seconds quicker than the production car record set by the track-focused hypercar, the Mercedes-AMG One. This combined testing and demonstration event was also McMurtry’s European dynamic debut at one of Europe’s biggest single dealer track days. The McMurtry Spéirling PURE hyper-track car starts at £895k + taxes & delivery. Right now, McMurtry are pushing the systems to about 75% of maximum as each mode is verified at new circuits and in different climates. Further record attempts will be made throughout the world in 2024 and 2025, as the test and validation programme moves towards the 100% power and 100% downforce settings. On June 7th and 8th, the Spéirling PURE (Validation Prototype 1) fan car was presented to track-driving customers at the Hockenheimring F1 circuit over two days. The car was showcased in both shared and exclusive sessions during the Dörr Group Track day. The shared sessions involved other track-focused and race cars. The Dörr Group organised two dedicated McMurtry sessions so that guests could experience the fan car’s performance without interruption. To build further anticipation, the local timekeepers set up a laser lap timer on the start-finish straight. On June 8th, 2024, with the car running at 75% power and 75% downforce, it achieved a lap time of 1.24.43 on the 2.842-mile F1 circuit. This was verified by independent timekeepers and driven by former-F1 driver Max Chilton, who is also the record holder at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. This lap time was 14.1 seconds faster than the exclusive track-focused hypercar, the Mercedes-AMG One, achieved in 2022. Additionally, it was 3.907 seconds faster than the DTM qualifying time in 2020, making it the fastest closed wheel car ever around Hockenheimring. The McMurtry Spéirling PURE is a hyper-track car available for order worldwide. It utilises a unique downforce-on-demand system to provide exceptional downforce and grip right from 0mph. This system works alongside the 1000bhp electric powertrain, offering selectable performance drive modes from GT3 to F1-level pace. Max Chilton, the test driver, expressed that showcasing the car at busy track events is always special. He mentioned feeling the atmosphere and excitement as he drove the car through famous bends at Hockenheim, experiencing sensations similar to when he raced there in F1 10 years ago. Chilton added, “The Speirling PURE is a great way for track drivers to experience the same thing.” Thomas Yates, Managing Director of McMurtry Automotive, mentioned that guests at the Dörr Group Track Day were intrigued to learn about the story behind fan cars and the future for track drivers who own them. He expressed gratitude to Dörr Group and Hockenheim for hosting the event and stated that achieving another record is a significant milestone for McMurty’s team and customers to be proud of.
