60 years of the Goldfinger Phantom: a timeless Bond of luxury and legend

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars celebrates 60 years of the iconic James Bond film, Goldfinger 1937 Rolls-Royce Phantom III used by film’s villain, Auric Goldfinger, to smuggle gold Perfectly suited to the task: powerful Phantom III was the first ever V12 Rolls-Royce Phantom III was the final model that Henry Royce developed before his death in 1933 Rolls-Royce will be making a special announcement on 25 October “Today marks the 60th anniversary of Phantom’s most memorable big-screen debut in the 1964 James Bond film, Goldfinger. The 1937 Rolls-Royce Phantom III Sedanca de Ville used in the film is both the perfect accomplice for its villain, Auric Goldfinger, and an enduring muse within our brand. The model used also holds a special place in the Rolls-Royce canon as it was the final motor car personally developed by our visionary founder, Sir Henry Royce. I look forward to announcing a brilliant new chapter in this story imminently.”Chris Brownridge, Chief Executive Officer, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars “This is gold, Mr. Bond. All my life, I’ve been in love with its colour, its brilliance, its divine heaviness.”Auric Goldfinger, Auric Enterprises Rolls-Royce motor cars have featured in a dozen James Bond films throughout the film franchise’s history. However, the marque’s most enduring and memorable role is in the 007 film, Goldfinger. This cinematic classic came to define the essential qualities of a Bond film; the design, the locations, the gadgets, and the eccentric adversary. Today, on the anniversary of the film’s premiere on 17 September 1964, Rolls-Royce explores the story of Goldfinger and the British icon that featured in it – the Rolls-Royce Phantom. The film sees eponymous villain, Auric Goldfinger, driven by his henchman, Oddjob, across Europe in an exquisite 1937 Rolls-Royce Phantom III Sedanca de Ville. The coachwork of this imperious motor car holds a secret – it is made from two tonnes of solid 18-carat gold, which Goldfinger is smuggling from England, across the continent and over the challenging Furka Pass into Switzerland. Once safely installed in Auric Enterprises, he uses his alpine smelting plant to disassemble his Rolls-Royce, melting down the body panels into gold bars. With the original coachwork replaced, he returns his motor car to England and repeats this nefarious crossing. Goldfinger’s master plan, named ‘Operation Grand Slam’, is far more ambitious; he plans to irradiate the gold stored in the Fort Knox Bullion Depository with an atomic device, rendering it worthless, driving the value of his own reserves into the stratosphere. Goldfinger’s choice of a Phantom III for smuggling gold is as brilliant as the precious metal that compels him. Its generous proportions allow for a significant amount of contraband to be concealed, and the gold’s ‘divine weight’ would do little to hinder this potent motor car’s performance, even on the demanding alpine roads. Phantom III was the first V12-powered Rolls-Royce in history, producing 165bhp from its 7.3-litre engine, a 37.5% increase in power from its predecessor, the 120bhp Phantom II. Phantom III was also the last motor car to be developed by Henry Royce himself, prior to his death in 1933. It includes a number of innovations that would have greatly improved those smuggling runs for Goldfinger. Its suspension system incorporates fully adjustable hydraulic shock absorbers which can be controlled from the driver’s seat, allowing Oddjob to fine-tune the ride depending on whether the motor car was laden or not. The specific motor car used by Goldfinger is equipped with an open front and enclosed rear ‘Sedanca de Ville’ – or Town Car – body by coachbuilders Barker. Its commanding presence prompts Bond himself to remark, “She’s a beauty… Phantom III ‘37, isn’t she?” as Oddjob loads Goldfinger’s signature gold golf club and harlequin umbrella into the boot outside Stoke Park, the private sporting estate where Bond first meets them. Goldfinger’s Phantom III wears the numberplate ‘AU 1’, a reference to the chemical symbol for gold on the periodic table of elements. While this was an obvious choice for the filmmakers, its designation has more simple origins. AU was the original British numberplate code designating that a motor car had been registered in Nottingham and AU 1 was issued in 1901 for one of the first vehicles in the area. After being used in the film, it was subsequently transferred to other Rolls-Royce motor cars, following its big-screen debut. Prior to its role in the film, this Phantom III was originally commissioned for American-born Huttleston Rogers Broughton, who settled in England and became the first Lord Fairhaven of Anglesey Abbey. Challenging the conventions of the time, it was painted almost entirely in black, including all lamp housings, bumpers, wheel discs and even the rear-view mirror surround. It included a white coachline, which highlighted the bonnet sides and top, and the chrome radiator shutters were sandblasted for a more subdued finish. The instruments included imperial and metric measurements, as it would be used by Lord Fairhaven on roads in Britain and Continental Europe. The motor car’s signature two-tone yellow and black finish was then applied for its appearance in Goldfinger. At 14:00 BST, on 25 October, Rolls-Royce will open a new chapter in the ‘AU 1’ Phantom story, furthering the legacy of this extraordinary motor car, and Rolls-Royce’s connection to the James Bond film franchise.

Aston Martin backed sustainable aluminium project awarded £6million of UK Government funding

Advanced Propulsion Centre UK (APC) funding to supplement the research and development of 100% recycled aluminium castings, for future Aston Martin models 17 September 2024, Gaydon, UK: Aston Martin’s ambition to continually improve the sustainability of its supply chain has been boosted by the award of £6million of UK Government funding for an innovative project supporting the development of lightweight, sustainable aluminium castings for Aston Martin vehicles of the future. Awarded through the Advanced Propulsion Centre UK (APC) following a competitive process, the government grant will support Project PIVOT, a collaborative five-partner research and development project led by Coventry-based aluminium supplier Sarginsons. Supported by Aston Martin, the project seeks to revolutionise the global casting industry through overhauling the design, weight, carbon emissions and production of cast aluminium, allowing the adoption of 100% recycled content. Today’s funding announcement is another positive step in Aston Martin’s sustainability strategy ‘Racing. Green.’ which incorporates efforts to improve the environmental impact of the company’s supply chain. In August, Aston Martin formally joined Drive Sustainability, a partnership of 16 automotive manufacturers working together to improve the social, ethical, and environmental performance of automotive supply chains, facilitated by CSR Europe. Roberto Fedeli, Group Chief Technology Officer of Aston Martin, said: “The award of funding from the APC is a major boost to Project PIVOT, which seeks to leverage advanced metal solidification and digital-twin simulations to manufacture low-carbon alloys which will ultimately uplift the level of recycled content we feature in Aston Martin models. We look forward to progressing this project collaboratively with Sarginsons and our other research partners. We thank the APC for their incredible support, following on from their backing of our electrification programme last year.” Ian Constance, APC Chief Executive, said: “These collaborative projects will further advance the UK’s excellence in automotive production. From sustainable materials to advanced electronics, and smart software systems, it’s important we continue to demonstrate that the automotive sector is vital to the country’s net-zero goals and that it is a highly investable opportunity.” Aston Martin is developing alternatives to the Internal Combustion Engine as part of its blended powertrain approach that will see the introduction of plug-in hybrid and battery electric vehicles, the first of which, Valhalla, is targeted to enter full production later this year before commencing delivery in 2025.

Building great cars and great people: Nissan’s new Production Director is made in Sunderland!

Nissan Sunderland is renowned for building great cars, but the new Production Director at the plant is proof that Wearside builds great people too. Lee Watson was born just a few miles from the plant and has lived his whole life in the region. He said: “Like many people, I can remember when Nissan first came to Sunderland. “One of my earliest memories is of my dad taking my uncle for an interview before the plant was even built. He got the job and only retired a few years ago after 30 years of service.” Lee attended Farringdon Comprehensive and then Sunderland College. He started his Nissan career in 1999, taking up a position in the manufacturing team in Unit shop, building engines, before moving onto Trim and Chassis two years later building Primera on the plant’s Line One. Since then, Lee, has risen through the ranks, working on cars such as the 100% electric Nissan LEAF and record-breaking Nissan Qashqai. In his new role he will lead the plant’s full production team of more than 3,000. Lee said: “I’m incredibly proud to be taking over as Production Director. Both my grandads were shipbuilders, so it’s great to be carrying on the manufacturing tradition. “Things are a little different today with the cutting-edge tech that goes into our brilliant cars, but the team spirit, skill and workmanship are as strong as ever.” And he’s in good company at the plant, with 13 of the plant’s senior leadership team having started their careers at Nissan and worked up. Lee added: “It’s proof that at Nissan if you work hard, learn and put the team first there are opportunities to progress.” It’s an exciting time at Nissan Sunderland, with new Juke and new Qashqai both going into production in 2024. And the plant is pushing forward its EV36Zero project, which combines EV and battery manufacturing with renewables and a goal of zero emissions driving as well as zero emissions manufacturing. Lee said: “Sunderland is at the heart of Nissan’s drive to a sustainable future. I’m looking forward to the challenges and exciting change that will bring.”

Breaking point: unexpected bill of £772 enough to make Brits want to replace car

CarGurus reveals top three factors that push drivers to the “breaking point” with their existing cars 10-day wait for repairs and fewer than three faults are enough to make drivers reach “breaking point” to find a new car Drivers are willing to spend an average of £14,320 on a new car: 1,752% more than the £772 breaking point to maintain a current vehicle 50% of motorists have made unexpected trips to the garage in the past year; 40% are putting off repairs because of cost Nearly three-quarters of motorists are stressed by the prospect of unexpected repairs CarGurus has listed the best used car buys for drivers who have reached their “breaking point” An unexpected car repair bill of £772 is the “breaking point” for drivers to part ways with their current vehicle, according to a newly released report. CarGurus – a leading automotive marketplace in the U.K. to shop, buy, and sell used vehicles – commissioned a survey of 1,000 U.K. drivers that own cars without a warranty. It revealed the unexpected problems that would be enough to make Brits consider buying a replacement car, rather than repair their current vehicle. Drivers are willing to tolerate fewer than three faults and spend an average of £772 over the next 12 months on unexpected repairs. In addition, on average, they’re only willing to wait a maximum of 10 days for an unplanned repair to be carried out. Should the “breaking point” be reached, owners would spend an average of £14,320 on a new car – £13,548 (1,752%) more than they would spend to fix unexpected issues to keep their current car in good order. This data comes during a time when the average age of vehicles on U.K. roads is now up to nine years, a full year increase compared to 2019i. Reliability (57%) and costs (45%) are the top reasons today’s drivers say they would want to replace their old car, reinforcing the “breaking point” factors. Other reasons include safety concerns (20%), being able to afford a better car (20%), and the size being unsuitable (12%). Survey data showed that 50% of U.K. car owners have made unexpected trips to the garage in the past 12 months. Outside of scheduled servicing and M.O.T.s, U.K. drivers spend an average of £269 per year on unplanned repairs according to the CarGurus survey. This is on top of £427 spent on average per year on planned maintenance such as servicing and M.O.T.s. 40% of respondents said they are putting off repairs because of the cost, and cars are being driven with issues such as dashboard warning lights, smoking exhausts, rattling engines, worn tyres, and rust. Nearly three-quarters (72%) of drivers surveyed said they are stressed by the prospect of unplanned car repairs and 90% rely upon a garage to carry out repairs for them. The CarGurus study also outlined car brands that British drivers perceive to be the most reliable and therefore the least likely to reach a “breaking point”: 1. Toyota2. Volkswagen 3. Ford4. Honda5. Volvo6. BMW7. Audi8. Mercedes 9. Nissan10. Hyundai Chris Knapman, Editorial Director at CarGurus U.K., said: “There is always the potential for the occasional unexpected car expense, yet as drivers are holding onto their cars for longer, our study shows that the tolerance of unforeseen issues is very low. For those who have reached breaking point, upgrading to a car with a long manufacturer-backed warranty can make a lot of sense, and is perfectly possible within the average budget of £14,320 that owners are willing to spend. “To help guide consumers, CarGurus experts have identified the longest manufacturer-backed car warranties in the U.K. We have also selected a range of vehicles from those brands to meet different needs, from a city car to a seven-seater, and everything in between. As ever, detail is everything, so be sure to read our guide to find out what is and isn’t included in each manufacturer’s warranty, and what conditions must be met to qualify.” Bye-Bye Breaking Point: Peace-of-Mind Motors for under £14,320 Best city car: Suzuki Ignis Why: Stylish, cheap to run, seats four people comfortably, well equipped What you can get: 2022 model with 10,000 miles Maximum warranty from first registration: Up to seven years and 100,000 miles if serviced with Suzuki Potential remaining warranty: Five years, 90,000 miles Best runaround: Hyundai i20 Why: Affordable to buy, cheap to run, easy to drive What you can get: 2023 model with 12,000 miles Maximum warranty from first registration: Five years, unlimited mileage Potential remaining warranty: Four years, unlimited mileage Best for families: Toyota Rav 4 (last generation) Why: Spacious and solid all-rounder with Toyota’s superb reliability record What you can get: 2017 model with 40,000 miles Maximum warranty from first registration: Up to 10 years and 100,000 miles if serviced with Toyota Potential remaining warranty: Three years, 60,000 miles Best for large families: Kia Carens Why: One of the only seven seaters available for the budget What you can get: 2018 model with 40,000 miles Maximum warranty from first registration: Seven years, 100,000 miles Potential remaining warranty: One year, 60,000 miles Best for fun: Suzuki Swift Sport Why: Hot hatch performance with big-car features and tiny running costs What you get: 2021 model with 12,000 miles Maximum warranty from first registration: Up to seven years and 100,000 miles if serviced with Suzuki Potential remaining warranty: Four years, 88,000 miles Best electric car: MG5 EV Why: It might not look terribly exciting, but the MG5 EV represents a great value choice to get into electric motoring, with a range of over 200 miles and enough room for the family What you can get: 2021 model with 5,000 miles Maximum warranty from first registration: Seven years and 80,000 miles Potential remaining warranty: Four years, 95,000 miles Best for luxury: Lexus IS Why: The IS combines style and quality with hybrid power for great efficiency What you can get: 2018 IS 300h model with 65,000 miles Maximum warranty from first registration: Up…
