From virtual to reality, gamers believe they’re better drivers

Nearly half (48%) of Brits who play racing video games believe that their time behind the virtual wheel makes them better drivers than non-gamers 65% of these gamers see racing video games as similar to real-life driving Could these perceived similarities be the source of their confidence on the road? Leatherhead, August 30th 2024 – For racing game enthusiasts, gaming isn’t just a virtual escape – it’s an opportunity to sharpen skills and build confidence that they believe translates to the real road. Almost half (48%) of those who play racing video games believe they’re better drivers than those who don’t, with only 13% of gamers disagreeing. But why do these gamers feel so confident and are those hours spent in front of screens worth it? Well, according to the gamers themselves, the answer is yes. Progressively immersive racing simulators and cutting-edge developments in car design means that the lines between racing games and reality are increasingly blurred. In fact, 4 in 10 believe gaming improves their real-life driving. The poll of 1,000 drivers who play racing video games, conducted by Hyundai revealed more than half (52%) report improved reaction time and safety, while overall awareness for the road (42%) and ability to see potential hazards (39%) are also improved by playing racing games. It’s these skills that are developed through gaming that have tangible effects, with half (50%) of those who played racing games as children believing it helped them pass their driving test faster, and over 52% confirming they passed on their first attempt. To further this, nearly two-thirds (65%) of respondents view racing video games as similar to real-life driving. Many find similarities in aspects like steering (63%), control & cornering (49%) and gear shifts (47%). Just a quarter (26%) think the sound in racing games matches real-life driving. Yet, sound remains a critical element for over three-quarters (78%) of gamers, and almost a third (30%) consider it the most important aspect of the driving experience. This is precisely where Hyundai’s N Active Sound + in the innovative IONIQ 5 N comes into play. This feature offers three realistic, dynamic sounds, one of which comes from the gaming world, having originally been created for Hyundai’s N 2025 Vision Gran Turismo concept car. Features like this, and the N Grin Shift ensures that EVs are as immersive and responsive as the cars that came before. “With one-third of players acknowledging that racing games have influenced their choice of car model, it’s evident that both fun and functionality need to be at the forefront of design. The technology in the IONIQ 5 N is essential for creating an exhilarating driving experience, addressing what many have felt was previously missing from EVs,” says Ashley Andrew, President of Hyundai & Genesis UK. Hyundai’s research also revealed that over three-quarters (77%) of people say they experience more excitement from virtual racing than from real-life driving, Hyundai Motor UK is introducing a new era of driving, ensuring that the thrill gamers enjoy remains a key feature in the future of electric vehicles, showcased in the Hyundai IONIQ 5 N.

Kumho provides tyres for Volkswagen Multivan

Kumho Tyre supplies its ECSTA HS52 as the original equipment (OE) tyre for the Volkswagen Multivan. The tyre is delivered in the two sizes 235/55R17 and 235/50R18. The new Multivan belongs to Volkswagen’s large van series, whose production began in 1949, making it the oldest vehicle from the German automaker. Based on MQB, Volkswagen’s signature platform for transverse engines, the Multivan boasts a variety of features and electrification technologies, such as a digital instrument cluster and wireless phone charging, which characterise the latest trends in the van and transporter segment. The ECSTA HS52 is suitable for both sedans and sport vehicles as it delivers superb riding comfort and excellent stability for drivers. The robust block pattern on the tread allows the tyre to maintain consistent friction when making a contact with the road surface, reducing shock and noise and improving driving comfort. Earlier this year, the ECSTA HS52 received excellent scores in summer tyre performance tests conducted by the German auto magazines ADAC Motorwelt and Auto Bild, which are renowned in Europe and around the world. It was ranked third (grade: Good) by ADAC Motorwelt and fourth (grade: Good) by Auto Bild. Insoo Kim, Executive Vice President of Sales – OE at Kumho Tyre, said, “Our supply of OE tyres for the Multivan holds great significance since the vehicle is a key model belonging to a series that dates back to the beginning of Volkswagen. The automaker’s recognition of our quality and technological capabilities has enabled us to maintain a strong partnership with them, even before the Multivan, with respect to such vehicles as the Polo, Taos and Jetta.” Its recent offer of tyres for signature electric vehicles from prestigious automakers has served as a testament to its industry-leading technological prowess and premium brand value.

Motoring art extravaganza to paint London Motor Week in a bold new light

New talent and ‘old masters’ will combine for the Royal Automobile Club’s 10th annual Art of Motoring exhibition in October The Royal Automobile Club today announces its Art of Motoring exhibition will return for a record 10th annual opening at the Iconic Images Gallery in Waterloo Place, London SW1, with a pledge to showcase emerging talent alongside acclaimed and established painters, illustrators and sculptors. The exhibition will run from Wednesday, 30 October to Saturday, 2 November at the Gallery, which is a few steps away from the Club’s historic clubhouse on Pall Mall. The Royal Automobile Club’s home is by some margin the cradle of motoring art in London, housing a breathtaking collection of historic pieces, regular changes of displays, and commissions of new work. The exhibition will be free and open to the public, and the majority of the works on show will be offered for sale. Past shows have been attended by celebrity collectors including musician Jools Holland and comedian turned historic racer Rowan Atkinson. “Over the past nine years The Art of Motoring has grown to be Europe’s most prestigious art show of its type,” said Jeremy Vaughan, Head of Motoring at the Royal Automobile Club. “The Club is once again delighted to be staging a superb display as part of our London Motor Week activities this autumn, leading up to the start of the RM Sotheby’s London to Brighton Veteran Car Run.” The final selection process will take place in early September, with curators Andrew Marriott and Rupert Whyte encouraging artists to submit three works which will be judged for inclusion by an independent panel. This will open up more ‘hanging’ space for new and emerging talent to display their work alongside well-established artists, which this year will again include painters Stefan Johansson, former Formula 1 and Le Mans driver, and Anna-Louise Felstead, creator of the signature artwork for this year’s RM Sotheby’s London to Brighton Veteran Car Run. Andrew Marriott said: “Our new selection process means we will have up to 30 new spaces available, so we anticipate bringing many talented new artists to motoring art collectors’ attention for the first time. This is an addition to the latest works by big names in our elite founding group of artists. So far, we are expecting as many as 75 submissions this year. “Britain has an extraordinarily diverse motoring art movement with an unparalleled tradition of creativity and inspiration. We simply aim to foster that.” For further information, please contact Andrew Marriott, Pit Lane Productions —07836 730012 — or Rupert Whyte, Historic Car Art — sales@historiccarart.net /01332 949997.

Spectacular trio win coveted awards on first day of 2024 Salon Privé Concours

Iconic cars spanning almost 110 years of automotive history have picked up three of the main prizes at this year’s Salon Privé Concours presented by Aviva Private Clients. The Duke of Marlborough Award has been presented to a 1993 Lamborghini Diablo entered by Lars Nielsen. Finished in the striking shade of Diablo Rosso, the UK-supplied example was in single ownership between 1994 and 2012 and has recently been restored to original specification. Presented with matching numbers and in its factory colour scheme, it’s one of the very finest examples of this Marcello Gandini-designed, V12-engined supercar. The Chairman’s Award was presented to a magnificent 1923 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost that was built at the company’s Springfield works in Massachusetts. Delivered to Penn Motors in June 1924 wearing an enclosed Pickwick town-car body, it was sold to its first private owner – Robert M Stein of Baltimore – in September 1926. Two years later, Stein returned chassis 77JH to the Springfield factory so that it could have Pall Mall tourer coachwork fitted. The Silver Ghost has existing in this configuration ever since and was restored by LaVine Restorations in 2022-23, after which it finished second in class at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. This highly distinguished vintageant is one of only two surviving American-built Pall Mall tourer dual-cowl cars, and was entered by Jack Boyd-Smith Jnr. A 1965 Rolls-Royce Phantom V by Mulliner Park Ward that was once owned by John Lennon picked up the George Barry Gregory Trophy after being selected for the Most Iconic award. Supplied new in May 1965 to Patrick Barthropp and registered PPB1, it was sold to the Beatles star in 1967, given the new registration EUC 100C and resprayed white. Lennon also had a Webasto roof fitted, as well as a Philips record player, an 8-track, a telephone and a television. White calico covers were used for the interior because Lennon and Yoko Ono didn’t want to use animal hides. The Rolls-Royce appeared in the Beatles film Let It Be, as well as Performance, which starred Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger. In September 1969, Lennon sold the car to Allen Klein, founder of ABKCO Records and the Beatles’ manager at the time. It has remained with the family ever since and was entered by Jody Klein. “The cars that have very deservedly won these three awards highlight the sheer variety of this year’s Concours entry,” said Salon Privé Chairman Andrew Bagley. “The standard was so high that it made choosing a winner in each category particularly difficult, but the Silver Ghost and Diablo are truly special cars – and you don’t get much more iconic than an ex-John Lennon Rolls-Royce.” This year’s Salon Privé Concours presented by Aviva Private Clients was the largest and most prestigious to date, with 72 cars being entered across 14 different classes. They ranged from the ever-popular pre-war categories to celebrations of Bugatti, Rolls-Royce and Ferrari. Fan favourites included Legendary Liveries – which showcased iconic colour schemes such as a Silk Cut Jaguar XJR 8/9, an Alitalia Lancia Stratos HF and a 555 Subaru Impreza WRC97 – while a new class for 2024 honoured the 60th anniversary of the Ferrari 275. All entries gathered on the beautiful South Lawn at Blenheim Palace, having come from as far afield as the USA, Thailand and even New Zealand. They were judged by an unrivalled panel of international experts, with all entries being adjudicated by the International Chief Judge Advisory Group (ICJAG). Salon Privé is one of four ICJAG Plus-designated events in the world, and the only one to be held in the UK. James Bond’s Vanquish available to ‘Drive Another Day’

James Bond’s Aston Martin Vanquish up for auction and expected to fetch between £50,000 to £70,000 The car was used by Pierce Brosnan and EON Productions to promote ‘Die Another Day’ in 2002 Licence to drive…this significant model was also the first car to drive down the M6 Toll road to commemorate its opening Opportunity to own a slice of British movie and motoring history courtesy of H&H Classics It’s ‘double O heaven’ for Bond fans and movie buffs as an Aston Martin Vanquish used by Pierce Brosnan and EON Productions to promote ‘Die Another Day’ is up for auction with H&H Classics. Furthermore, the car going under the hammer was the lead car in a parade to commemorate the opening of the M6 Toll road in 2003. This significant model will be offered for sale on Wednesday 9th October at the Imperial War Museum, Duxford. Estimated to fetch between £50,000 to £70,000, the V12-powered, near 200mph GT began life as one of seven Vanquish cars retained by Aston Martin for press duties which were sequentially road registered from ‘Y829 MWL’ through to ‘Y836 MWL’ (with the exception of ‘Y830 MWL’). Thus, the sale car – ‘Y834 MWL’ had already graced the pages of various publications by the time it was delivered to Pinewood Studios for a photoshoot alongside the fifth James Bond, Pierce Brosnan. The resultant images were used to promote the 2002 007-outing, ‘Die Another Day’ worldwide with ‘Y834 MWL’ being specifically chosen because it was finished in the same Tungsten Silver paint with Charcoal leather and an aluminium centre console, as the hero cars used on the silver screen. ‘Die Another Day’ starred Halle Berry too while the film’s title-song was performed by Madonna, who also made a cameo appearance. The model for sale, which has also sported the appropriate the number plate ‘M16 SPY’ for a brief while and also been registered as ‘A12 AML’, has just 37,800 miles from new and been in the hands of its current owner for more than 20 years as part of a prominent collection. The interior of the Vanquish is equally appealing and blends technology and traditional materials that were considered state-of-the-art at the time. Meanwhile, images from the iconic collaboration between James Bond and ‘Y834 MWL’ are still being used by numerous newspapers, magazines and websites today. James McWilliam, sales manager at H&H Classics, said: “Our October auction offers a fantastic opportunity to own a slice of movie and motoring history with this stunning Aston Martin Vanquish. “Not only was it used at Pinewood Studios for photoshoots with Pierce Brosnan for ‘Die Another Day’ but it was also the first car to drive down the M6 Toll road to commemorate its opening. “Additionally, as well as the close connection to James Bond and Pierce Brosnan, who himself owned a 2002 Aston Martin V12 Vanquish, the car is also a superb example of the marque’s last hand-built grand tourer.” ‘Die Another Day’ also has an important role in the James Bond franchise as it re-forged the links between EON Productions and Aston Martin such that the British manufacturer has supplied all the world’s most famous spy’s hero cars since 2002. Škoda Auto produces first units of updated Octavia in Kvasiny

Škoda Auto is utilising the Kvasiny plant’s capacity to produce additional units of the updated Octavia Production at the Mladá Boleslav plant will continue concurrently, strategically freeing up capacity for the Enyaq, Enyaq Coupé, and Elroq models Since 1996, Škoda Auto has produced approximately 7.5 million units of the Škoda Octavia Mladá Boleslav/ Kvasiny, 29 August 2024 – The first updated Škoda Octavia built at the Kvasiny plant has rolled off the production line. The production of additional units of the brand’s bestseller in Kvasiny has been made possible thanks to the manufacturing of the new-generation Superb moving to the Volkswagen plant in Bratislava. At the same time, production of the Octavia continues at Škoda’s main facility in Mladá Boleslav. Around 7.5 million units have been produced since the first modern-generation Octavia was introduced in 1996. Andreas Dick, Škoda Auto Board Member for Production and Logistics, says: “By producing additional units of the Škoda Octavia at our Kvasiny plant we are making efficient use of our flexible production network and fully utilising the capacities of our plants. In addition to comprehensively preparing for the production launch of additional Octavia units at Kvasiny, we have established a training centre providing the ideal setting to further train and upskill our team. I sincerely thank everyone involved in this project for their effort and dedication throughout the process.” Training centre tailored to different learning levelsThe additional units of the updated fourth-generation Škoda Octavia are produced on the same production line as the Karoq at the Kvasiny plant and where the Kodiaq SUV is also built. While preparing for the production launch of the updated Škoda Octavia, the carmaker opened a training centre in Kvasiny equipped with state-of-the-art technology, three robotic workstations for practical training and two classrooms for advanced theoretical instruction. Škoda Octavia: a milestone model with sustained high demand The first modern-generation Škoda Octavia rolled off the Mladá Boleslav production line in 1996. It was the first model to be developed entirely under the umbrella of the Volkswagen Group. In March 1998, Škoda introduced the even more spacious Octavia Estate and the first all-wheel-drive variant followed in 1999. Produced between 2004 and 2013, the second-generation Škoda Octavia offered an upgraded engine range, enhanced technology, a more robust body compared to its predecessor and the large radiator grille took on a trapezoidal shape. The third generation model was built on the Volkswagen Group’s then-new MQB A platform and offered a standard boot capacity of 590 litres for the hatchback and 610 litres for the estate. In 2017, the updated model came with split headlights featuring optional LED technology. The current fourth generation of the Škoda Octavia debuted in November 2019. It is built on the updated MQB platform. Some of the petrol engines can be paired with mild-hybrid technology or all-wheel drive. The Octavia was comprehensively updated in spring, bringing a refreshed design, second-generation Matrix-LED headlights, further enhanced safety and comfort features, and new functions, including the integration of ChatGPT into the voice assistant Laura. Across the four modern generations, approximately 7.5 million Octavias have been produced, continuing the legacy of the popular historical model, the first units of which were produced 65 years ago. Available as a two-door saloon or a practical estate, a total of 360,000 vehicles were produced between 1959 and 1971.

Thursday 29 August, 2024 UK commercial vehicle (CV) manufacturing output soared 71.7% in July to reach 15,252 units, reversing four months of decline, according to the latest figures published today by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). The increase resulted in the best July performance in 16 years and a 201.8% increase on pre-pandemic July 2019 volumes.1 Growth in the month was driven by easing supply chain challenges and ongoing demand from overseas markets – which grew 76.8% to 9,534 units. Exports accounted for 62.5% of all vehicles produced in the month, with the EU taking the lion’s share and nearly all exports (99.1%). The domestic market also recorded double-digit growth, rising by 63.7% to 5,718 units. The sector’s first monthly uptick since February sees year-to-date commercial vehicle production up by 7.3% on the same period in 2023 to 72,761 units – a healthy gain of 4,971 units and an 81.31% increase on pre-pandemic 2019.2 Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, said, “An end to recent supply chain disruption signals a return to growth for the UK’s commercial vehicle sector, and significant growth at that. Sustaining strong global demand for British-built vans, trucks and buses, which are increasingly zero emission, now depends on maintaining favourable trading conditions, creating healthy markets at home and boosting UK competitiveness on the global stage.” Notes for EditorsSMMT data is subject to periodical revision if additional information becomes available. It complements the exterior features of the M Sport Package and emphasises the striking lines of the front apron. Finished in high-gloss black, the three-part front splitter gives the SAV a decidedly distinctive appearance, especially when combined with the M Performance front ornamental grille painted in the same colour. The exclusive M Performance side decals in Frozen Black also emphasise the sporty character of the new BMW X3 from the side. The light-, weather- and wash-resistant decal set is perfectly adapted to the vehicle’s geometry and makes a clear reference to motorsport. The M Performance Carbon fuel filler cap with M Performance lettering on brushed aluminium makes an unmistakable statement at the fuel station. The striking M Carbon exterior mirror caps and the M Performance aerial cover in aramid are further accents that lend the profile of the new BMW X3 an individual and sporty touch. The aramid-reinforced plastic is very similar to carbon fibre, but offers greater electromagnetic permeability, ensuring unrestricted reception when making calls and using the many digital services available. Striking sportiness: M Performance rear diffuser, M Performance roof edge spoiler and M Performance tailpipe trims. The M Performance rear diffuser is also made from this high-tech material. It gives an even more striking appearance to the rear of the car, which is already characterised by its generous surfaces, and, in conjunction with the Comfort Access system, allows the luggage compartment lid to be opened and closed without the need for physical contact. An optional M Performance rear diffuser in high-gloss black polyurethane is also available for the new BMW X3. Both versions of the rear diffuser are combined with the M Performance rear bumper trim in high-gloss black. The M Performance roof edge spoiler is also made of polyurethane and is finished in high-gloss black. Perfectly tailored to the design of the vehicle, it not only optimises the aerodynamic properties of the new BMW X3, but also adds a particularly dynamic touch to the rear of the vehicle. If desired, it can be painted in the colour of the vehicle. The M Performance Carbon tailpipe trims integrated into the rear apron, which are available exclusively for the M Performance model BMW X3 M50 xDrive, give the SAV an especially powerful look (fuel consumption combined: 8.3 – 7.7 l/100 km (62 miles); CO2 emissions combined: 189 – 175 g/km according to WLTP; CO2 class(es) G-F). They were specially designed for the two pairs of tailpipes, which unmistakably identify the new BMW X3 M50 xDrive as the most powerful model in the series and bear an embossed M logo. Their CFRP coating, stainless steel inner tailpipes and thermal decoupling of the tailpipe are a testament to the highest quality standards. The M model badge “X3” in high-gloss black on the rear of the new BMW X3 also sets an exclusive visual accent. The M model badge “M50” is also available in a high-gloss black finish for the M Performance model. Up to 22-inch light alloy wheels are available for an even more exclusive look.A further highlight in the range of accessories for the new BMW X3 are the weight-optimised 22-inch M Performance light-alloy wheels. The complete summer wheel set is available exclusively in Bicolour Jetblack matt finish. The Y-spoke light alloy wheels feature polished elements on the outer rim and centre for a particularly exclusive look. In addition, 20-inch M Performance Y-spoke wheels in Jet Black Matt are available as both a summer and winter complete wheel set. Additional wheel sets are ideally stowed in the M Performance tyre bags. Reinforced bag handles make it easy to transport the wheels. Precisely honed racing flair also for the interior. As soon as the doors are opened, the M Performance Carbon door sills unmistakably signal the new BMW X3’s dynamic orientation. With their distinctive M Performance lettering, they are an individual eye-catcher. Alternatively, M aluminium door sill trims are also available for the new edition of the SAV. Authentic motorsport flair can also be found in the footwell of the new BMW X3 with the stainless steel M Performance pedal cover. The M Performance floor mats are the ideal complement. The four-piece set features embroidered M Performance lettering, leather-look edging, contrasting stitching and a stitched-in ribbon in BMW M colours. The M Performance locking button in black anodised aluminium with a coloured M logo ensures a harmonious style in the interior down to the last detail. The M Performance key case, with its mix of Alcantara and carbon-look leather, also conveys a subtle hint of performance passion outside the vehicle. The custom-fit case protects the car key from scratches and has convenient cut-outs for all the function buttons.…
