Japanese racing prodigy Juju Noda takes the wheel for A2RL testing; kicks off data collection in Italy

Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League (A2RL) conducts first-ever European tests in Italy; aims to collect critical data on SF23 vehicle dynamics, driving behavior, environmental radio frequency challenges and new sensors evaluation. Sessions held at Imola and Vallelunga, to be led by Super Formula driver Juju Noda Testing paves the way for future European autonomous races as series grows beyond the UAE Italy/Abu Dhabi- UAE, 28 August 2024 – The Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League (A2RL) is conducting its first-ever manned vehicle testing outside the UAE, signifying expansion into new international markets, with test sessions currently underway in Italy. Led by talented Japanese driver Juju Noda, this crucial phase of testing involves putting the SF23 racecar through its paces to gather vital data on vehicle dynamics, GPS trajectories, and human driver behavior, laying the groundwork for all future autonomous races. The three-day test sessions across Imola and Vallelunga will enable A2RL engineers to evaluate how the vehicle performs under human control in an unfamiliar environment, moving from Yas Marina Circuit to other challenging tracks. The data gathered will be crucial for enhancing A2RL’s autonomous systems, ensuring they can adapt to various terrains as the league expands into new regions. Noda joins former F1 driver Daniil Kvyat as a Development Driver at A2RL, with whom the engineering team worked extensively at Yas Marina Circuit earlier this year. The pair will share testing responsibilities in the second year of the championship. Getting her start in single-seat racecars at just age nine, Juju has followed her father’s footsteps into the world of professional motorsport. Previously, she competed in the W Series and Euroformula Open. She currently races in Japan’s top-tier single-seat racing series, Super Formula, which also uses the SF23 racecar. Juju Noda, Development Driver for A2RL, commented: “I am very excited about the upcoming testing at Imola and Vallelunga with A2RL. The SF23 is a very familiar platform, so it will be interesting to see how it performs on these iconic Italian tracks. I’m looking forward to using my experience with the racecar to help guide testing and data collection. Development driving for an autonomous car is an entirely new experience for me and I can’t wait to get started with the A2RL team.” Stephane Timpano, CEO of A2RL, concluded: “Imola and Vallelunga should provide us with some interesting technical detail and – potentially – pave the way for overseas races and a global series. We are looking forward to working with Juju, who has become very familiar with the SF23 through her Super Formula racing. The data we collect in Italy will be invaluable in preparing the cars and the teams for future AI-powered races.” To learn more about A2RL, visit: https://a2rl.io/More images are available to download in high resolution here: https://we.tl/t-M6q7JhTRzA

Bentley Blower Jnr now configurable online

First Edition models of electric, road-legal, scale version of iconic 1929 Bentley Blower now sold out 100% Bentley but 85 per cent scale – crafted by Hedley Studios (formerly The Little Car Company) Newly launched configurator allows customers to visualise personalised specifications as standard ordering opens, limited to 250 cars First example of bespoke Bentley Blower Jnr presented at Monterey Car Week, following global debut last year Customers can also choose from six predetermined packs, each celebrating a uniquely fascinating and evocative chapter of Bentley’s glorious history (Crewe, 28 August 2024) Following the success of the launch of the Bentley Blower Jnr at Monterey Car Week last year, Bentley and Hedley Studios (formerly The Little Car Company) now showcases an array of configurable options for the 85 per cent scale, fully electric and road-legal recreation of Bentley’s legendary 1929 4½-Litre supercharged ‘Blower’. The configurable Bentley Blower Jnr made its public debut at Monterey Car Week in California from 15 August. Finished in stunning Old English White exterior paint, with a Cricket Ball leather interior, ‘The White Pack’ Bentley Blower Jnr was displayed during Car Week at the House of The Macallan powered by Bentley. Customers can now visualise their individual specification via an all-new online configurator, enabling them to build and commission a Bentley Blower Jnr that is entirely bespoke and unique to them. With thousands of possible configurations including interior and exterior colours, the opportunities for personalisation extend to hand painted numbers and national flags added to the body. Packed full of historyHedley Studios’ configurator for the Bentley Blower Jnr includes six carefully curated packs, each paying tribute to Bentley’s immersive and legendary history. ‘The Blue Pack’, for example, harks back to Woolf Barnato’s famous race against the Blue Train, from the Côte d’Azur to Calais, in which Barnato provided triumphant behind the wheel of his Bentley Speed Six. In a similar vein, ‘The Grey Pack’ pays tribute to the Speed Six that took victory at Le Mans in 1929 and 1930, before being converted by Barnato into road-going coupé finished in a visceral gunmetal grey. Just 250 configurable models are available, which will take the total production run of the Bentley Blower Jnr to 349 worldwide after the success of the 99 limited First Editions. Ben Hedley, Founder and CEO of Hedley Studios, commented:“Since we launched the Bentley Blower Jnr last year, its reception has continued to blow us away, and with all First Editions sold out, we’re excited to launch the configurable options for the Blower Jnr. Craftsmanship lies at the heart of what we do, and giving customers the opportunity to curate their very own Bentley Blower Jnr through our online configurator provides a wonderful route into owning a slice of history, but with a very personal touch. “Each configured pack we have on offer bears its own unique story and provenance, celebrating the great seminal moments and creations of the legendary Bentley brand. Therefore, it was only right that we unveiled these at an event of equal prestige, Monterey Car Week.” A Faithful HomageBlower Jnr is a collaboration between Hedley Studios and Bentley’s Heritage Collection. The original Team Car from 1929 – insured for £25m – was used by Hedley Studios to master the design of Blower Jnr, with details recreated at a sizeable 85 per cent scale. The result is a vehicle that will have even experts looking twice – with the car measuring 3.7 metres long and 1.5 metres wide. Unlike Hedley Studios’ other products, Blower Jnr is fully road legal and designed specifically to be used on the road and is perhaps the most sophisticated city car ever built. Crafted by hand to the same standards as any Bentley, and adorned with beautiful details all inspired by the original Team car, Blower Jnr is built around a 48V electric powertrain with a 15 kW (20 bhp) motor, meaning a top speed of 45 mph / 72 km/h in the UK and EU (25 mph / 40 km/h in the USA due to legislation) and an expected range of around 65 miles, with tandem seating for two adults. Beyond the headline figures, the beauty of Blower Jnr is in the recreation and repurposing of details from the original car. The frame is painted steel, to which an authentic chassis specification is attached. Leaf springs and scaled-down, period-correct friction dampers bring a comfortable ride, while Brembo disc brakes at the front and drums at the rear provide the stopping power. The electric motor is mounted across the rear axle, while the batteries and drive electronics are all housed in a hidden undertray. The bodywork is crafted in two sections, and while the rear body structure is crafted in carbon fibre rather than being an ash frame, it’s covered in impregnated fabric, just as the original. The bonnet, with its multiple cooling louvres, is hand-crafted in aluminium using traditional techniques and fastened with beautiful leather buckled bonnet straps. The two-person cockpit is in a 1+1 layout, with a central adjustable driving position and the passenger travelling behind in the rear seat. An optional bespoke weekend bag fits behind, in the scaled down and repurposed fuel tank complete with lockable latch. At the front of the car, the supercharger now houses the charging port that connects the onboard charger to any Type 1 or Type 2 socket, and is surrounded by the famous Bentley mesh grille, in an authentic nickel-plated radiator housing. At first glance the dashboard looks like a scaled-down replica of the original, with Engine Turned Aluminium forming the dashboard itself. The fuel pressurisation hand pump has been repurposed as the drive mode selector, with a choice of Comfort (2 kW), Bentley (8 kW) or Sport for maximum power of 15 kW. Forward, Neutral and Reverse are selected via a lever that looks and feels like the ignition advance control from the original Blower. Other switchgear for the headlights and indicators copies the form and materiality of the magneto switches from the Team…

The new stand-alone series of restored Kingsley Defenders is described as combining “the British brand’s two-decade-long history with the Land Rover marque with modern needs”. Every alteration, insists Kingsley, both retains the essence of a Land Rover Defender “while transforming it into a perfect companion for both off- and on-road trips”. The Oxfordshire-based firm, established in 2001 and just five miles from Blenheim Palace, has used its experience restoring over 500 classic Range Rovers and Land Rovers to create the inaugural stand-alone series of restored Kingsley Defenders. Available in D90 and D110 configurations, every meticulous alteration is said to retain the essence of a Land Rover Defender while also transforming it for modern use. At Salon Privé, the Kingsley Defender D90 was showcased, with Kingsley Re-Engineered MD John Sawbridge stating: “Our goal is to deliver a Defender that resonates with the same spirit of adventure and robustness, but with the sophistication and driving dynamics that today’s customers expect.” Rolls-Royce Motor Cars presented the Cullinan Series II which evolves and builds on this motor car’s place in the brand, proving once more that the future of this marque will be shaped in partnership with its clients and characterised by exquisite contemporary crafts. This car is also fitted with newly released BRABUS Monoblock ZM alloys. The remarkable Tuthill GT ONE made its UK debut just days after it was revealed for the first time to global acclaim at Pebble Beach. Landing at Salon Privé directly from The Quail, it’s a real homecoming for this remarkable homage to 1990s FIA GT1 racing cars for Le Mans, as Tuthill is also based just up the road from Blenheim Palace in Banbury – where the GT ONE was conceived. The Tuthill GT ONE is a road-going car with a full carbon fibre body designed by California’s Florian Flatau. Just 22 cars will be built, each requiring 3,500 hours of meticulous build time. Owners have a choice of specifications, including either a naturally aspirated 4.0-litre six-cylinder engine, producing over 500bhp – or a turbocharged version producing over 600bhp. Richard Tuthill said: “The FIA GT1 class enabled manufacturers to created stunning race cars. We have taken the best bits but focused on producing a wonderful road car… I hope you can all enjoy it with us!” Clive Sutton returned once again to Salon Privé at Blenheim Palace, showcasing the new turnkey Shelby Cobra, which is now available in the UK for the first time in almost 60 years. It was showcased alongside a bespoke-built 1967 Mustang GT500CS and the attention-grabbing Clive Sutton VIP Taxi. Clive Sutton also debuted a new luxury conversion, the VIP Class Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, with seven airline-style massage seats, twin 43-inch 4K screens and a panoramic glass roof. “Our customers demanded a level of luxury and convenience that surpasses what is available in the standard luxury vehicle market,” explained Clive Sutton when asked what led to the First Class Sprinter. Salon Privé is the perfect setting for such customers to inspect it. The MG Cyber GTS was showcased just weeks after its world debut to celebrate MG’s 100th anniversary. Prototypes of the Mercedes-AMG PureSpeed in the final stages of testing

Highly exclusive roadster on development testing in camouflage Unique bodyshell concept must prove itself on a wide variety of roads High-speed drives on special circuit also part of final development programme Affalterbach/Nardò. Mercedes-AMG is commencing the final phase in the development of the highly exclusive PureSpeed sports car, which celebrated its world premiere as a concept vehicle in Monaco in May 2024. Prototypes of the limited-run model are currently undergoing test drives. It starts on a variety of different roads in northern Italy before heading south to the high-speed test track in Nardò. The radical design, a completely open, two‑seater performance car with neither roof nor windscreen, is a homage to racing and must prove itself on this test programme over a total of more than 3,000 kilometres. During these drives, the development team is focusing on a broad spectrum of tasks – necessary for testing the high quality of the two‑seater under real‑life driving conditions. These ensure the functionality and interaction of all systems and components. Likewise, the spectacular body concept is being evaluated in wide-ranging situations for adherence to exacting quality standards. On top of that, experts are carrying out fine-tuning under extremely dynamic handling and at high speeds on the test track. Total vehicle testing on public roads is undertaken in cooperation with project partner Pininfarina, renowned experts in small‑volume specialist projects. One of the two-seater’s highlights is the HALO system, which replaces the conventional A‑pillar. This element is derived directly from the pinnacle of motorsport. It protects the occupants in the event of an accident. As in Formula 1TM, the aerodynamically optimised safety system in the Mercedes‑AMG PureSpeed consists of a curved bar fixed to the vehicle body. Two helmets, which are also aerodynamically optimised, provide additional protection and were designed and produced exclusively for the Mercedes‑AMG PureSpeed. The small production run is limited to 250 and reserved for just a few enthusiasts and collectors. Inspired by legendary racing cars, the combination of inimitable racing aesthetics and exceptionally dynamic performance makes the Mercedes‑AMG PureSpeed a unique driving machine for connoisseurs. It is the first model in the new ultra-limited Mercedes‑Benz Mythos series. Škoda Fabia: 25 years of success

The first Škoda Fabia rolled off the assembly line 25 years ago More than 4.9 million Fabias have been built since production started in 1999, a figure only surpassed in the Škoda range by the Octavia Nearly 400,000 Fabias have found homes in the UK All four generations of Fabia have won more than 100 industry awards Milton Keynes, 27 August 2024 – For 25 years, the Škoda Fabia has been a cornerstone of the brand’s product range. Along with the Octavia, it has enjoyed a continuous production run and become the brand’s second biggest selling car of all time. Through four generations it has set sector standards for practicality, comfort and value and won countless awards along the way. The UK has played a major part in the Fabia’s success story. British buyers adopted the Fabia in big numbers and has been one of the brand’s biggest markets in Europe, along with Germany, the Czech Republic and Poland. The Fabia’s sales success highlights its broad appeal across all markets. Almost 1.8 million examples of the first-generation car were built, with the second-generation car adding 1.7 million to the total. To date, more than 4.9 million Fabias have been built since production started in 1999, a figure only surpassed in the Škoda range by the Octavia. The appeal of the Fabia has been remarkably broad. While value-packed entry level models have enabled many buyers to choose a new car for the first time, at the other end of the range, vRS models gave the Fabia range a more focused, sporting edge. Indeed, cars like the turbo-diesel-powered Mk1 Fabia vRS have become modern classics thanks to Škoda’s ability to take a different approach. The same can also be said for the Mk2 vRS, which introduced the sector’s first turbocharged and supercharged drivetrain. The Fabia has also been Škoda’s model of choice for its highly successful motorsport programmes. From the fire-breathing 2003 Fabia WRC to the current Fabia RS Rally2, the Fabia has become the benchmark car in world rallying. One of the very few competition cars designed and built in-house by Škoda, the Fabia has become synonymous with success at the highest levels of the sport. Fabia Mk1 1999-2007 – 1.78 million models sold worldwideŠkoda revealed the final design of the Fabia at the 1999 Frankfurt Motor Show. The 1.0 and 1.4 8v engines offered at launch were reworked versions of the 1.3-litre units developed for the Felicia and Favorit. Both engines remained part of the range until a mid-life facelift was introduced in 2004. The Fabia proved to be an instant it with both buyers and critics, who praised the model for its style, practicality and value for money. It was named overall Car of the Year 2000 by What Car? Following the introduction of the five-door hatch, Škoda added to the Fabia range with an Estate, which made its public debut at the 2000 Paris Motor Show. The success of the estate version, would see it continue as a key part of the line-up for a further two generations of Fabia. Škoda’s engineering reputation grew further in 2003 with the introduction of the Fabia vRS. Powered by a 1.9-litre 130PS turbodiesel engine, the Fabia defied convention and proved that flexibility and a colossal torque output (310Nm) was more than a match for a peaky, high-revving petrol engine. The fact that it returned up to 53.3mpg and came loaded with standard equipment made it one of the most competitive and engaging packages in the sector. Fabia Mk2 2007-2014 – 1.7 million models sold worldwideThe second-generation Fabia was previewed at the 2007 Geneva Motor Show before it entered series production a month later. Like the first-generation model, the Mk2 was built on the Volkswagen Group’s PQ24 platform, but featured a larger body and a host of design and engineering improvements over its predecessor. The new generation of Fabia introduced a softer look that mirrored the brand’s evolving design language. It debuted more rounded lines, swept-back headlights and a distinctive ‘floating roof’ and blacked-out A-pillar. At 315 litres, the boot was considerably larger than the previous model (along with cars from the sector above), while passengers enjoyed an increase in headroom throughout the cabin. Inside, the Fabia introduced a sleeker, more sophisticated look, alongside better materials and more equipment. Higher quality plastics and fabrics made the new Fabia feel a more premium offering, while improvements in the entertainment and driver display made the second-generation model feel a cut above its predecessor. With the introduction of the brand’s new Amundsen entertainment system, the second-generation Fabia was the first to be available with a touchscreen display. Škoda followed up the success of the first-generation vRS model with a new version that marked another first in the sector. Offered in hatch and estate form for the first time, the second-generation Fabia vRS came with a unique 1.4 TSI 180PS ‘twincharged’ engine that featured a turbocharger and a supercharger. The new engine, gave both versions a 0-62mph time of 7.3 seconds and a top speed of 139mph in the five-door hatch and 140mph in the estate. At the other end of the performance scale, Škoda introduced a new version of its GreenLine II model. Equipped with a new 1.2 TDI CR DPF engine and host of other fuel-saving technologies, the second generation Fabia Greenline was the cleanest and most efficient car Škoda has ever built, with CO2 emissions of just 89g/km. Fabia Mk3 2014-2021 – 1.2 million models sold worldwideThe third model to wear the Fabia badge ushered in a raft of new technology, safety features and driver aids. UK sales of the third-generation model started in January 2015. Unlike the first two evolutions of the Fabia, which used the Volkswagen Group’s PQ24 platform, the third-generation was built on a new PQ26 hybrid platform that combined parts of the existing PQ25 and new MQB platforms. This brought with it an increased wheelbase of 2,470mm (+5mm) and a wider track (+30mm) that effectively offset the reduction…
