1983 Classic Mini ‘Mentley’ wins Hot Wheels Legends Tour UK 2024

1983 classic Mini ‘Mentley’ wins UK leg of the Hot Wheels Legends Tour – with a chance of becoming the next legendary die-cast toy Dominic Whittle’s build fought off stiff competition from over 180 entrants to claim the UK crown Three finalists gathered in front of automotive fans and a panel of expert judges at SlammedUK’s Gravity Show at the NEC on 24-25 August A 1983 Austin Mini, remodelled with styling to evoke the classic Bentley Speed 8s of the 1920s, was named as the winner of the 2024 Hot Wheels Legends Tour UK – hosted by SlammedUK’s Gravity Show at the NEC. Set to represent the UK on the global stage and stake its claim to be recreated as a 1:64 scale die-cast model, the Mini ‘Mentley’ was first conceived as a track day car, before being gradually transformed into the showpiece it is today. Beneath the bonnet is a fully engineered 320bhp TVR V8 engine and Range Rover gearbox, when boosted by nitrous through straight exhaust pipes, early trials suggest it may achieve 0-60mph in three seconds in a straight line – if the driver is courageous enough! Owned by a trio of musicians – Dominic Whittle, Gary Selby and Mike Williams – the three friends use it to travel across Europe with their instruments strapped to the luggage rack performing throughout France, Italy and Germany to raise money for Save the Children. “It’s a huge privilege for us to win the UK round of the Hot Wheels Legends Tour with ‘Mentley’, justifying the hard work (and fun) we had creating it,” says Dominic Whittle. “Our interest in cars began when we were six years old, and it’s great to be here 53 years later with a vehicle that reflects those childhood memories. “We’ve had a fantastic time, the other two finalists have been great and we’re in awe of their ability and builds. To be immersed in a world of car enthusiasts for two days as part of the Gravity Show has been tremendous.” Beating over 180 entries, Dominic Whittle’s Mini ‘Mentley’ impressed the judging panel, led by Hot Wheels’ design manager Craig Callum, with its unmistakable authenticity and character capturing the essence of the Hot Wheels Legends Tour. Judges Nicola Hume (host of Red Bull’s ‘Talking Bull’ podcast), Jordan Clarke (founder of Slammed UK) and influencer Mat Armstrong scored each entry against a strict set of criteria – design, authenticity and garage spirit, as well as performance, fun and the story behind the build. As Craig Callum explains; “The Hot Wheels Legends Tour celebrates the builders, visionaries and the people in the automotive world who put in the late nights, early mornings and creativity to produce a legend. Once again the UK has provided some fantastic contenders full of the creativity, garage spirit and authenticity that makes Hot Wheels Legends so special. “With a wild engine transplant squeezed into a unique design twist of two British icons, Dominic Whittle’s Mini ‘Mentley’ perfectly captures the fun we are looking for, and if you look at our past Legends, this is a true contender – it’s the kind of design we would develop in the studio ourselves. It’s got such authenticity, but it’s also completely different, there are so many little touches that give it character. When I think practically about how we make a die-cast Hot Wheels, with four main component parts, the vehicle lends itself for manufacture. It’s spot on.” The initial entry list was narrowed down to eight semi-finalists by Hot Wheels representatives on both sides of the Atlantic, with marques such as Lamborghini, Volkswagen, Ford and Porsche having vied for the opportunity – alongside the 1999 BMW E36 SlammedUK fan vote winner Jason Gorle, which was fast-tracked to the UK final, where it joined Jason West’s 1992 Ford P100. For only the second time, the 2024 UK final was open to the public – taking place at the Gravity Show this weekend – the UK’s largest modified and supercar show, held at the Birmingham NEC. After winning the UK leg of the Hot Wheels Legends Tour, the Mini ‘Mentley’ will compete against regional finalists at the Global Semi-Final on November 2nd with the Grand Finale set for November 11th with the overall victor being transformed into a die-cast that will be sold around the world. Whittle hopes to follow in the footsteps of last year’s winner – Michael Wallhead’s MG-Beast – who took the UK entry to the Global Finale for the third consecutive year. Coupled with Lee Johnstone’s 1969 Volvo P1800 Gasser, winning the competition overall in 2021 – it underlines the UK’s place and standing in worldwide car culture. Aston Martin Vantage GT3 chasing glory as FIA World Endurance Championship returns to COTA

New Aston Martin Vantage GT3 chasing victory on FIA World Endurance Championship Circuit of the Americas [COTA] debut Aston Martin the most successful GT manufacturer at Austin, as WEC returns to COTA for the first time since 2020 The Heart of Racing [THoR] all set to make its WEC home race ‘debut’ Vantage on the podium again in IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship as THoR GTD hot streak continues Works driver Ross Gunn closes in on IMSA GTD Pro points lead Tuesday, 27 August, 2024, Austin, USA: Aston Martin makes a racing return to the Circuit of the Americas [COTA] and the Lone Star Le Mans 6 hours race – scene of extraordinary success for Vantage in the FIA World Endurance Championship [WEC] – as the newest Vantage GT3 prepares to take its Texas bow in the hands of partner teams The Heart of Racing [THoR] and D’station Racing, this weekend. No other manufacturer boasts such a tremendous victory tally at the Austin venue, which returns to the WEC calendar for the first time since 2020 when Aston Martin also recorded a double-class victory. Indeed, the British ultraluxury sportscar brand has achieved no less than nine GT class wins in the six events COTA has staged since the series was formed in 2012. That’s a 75% win ratio, and four of those triumphs were double-class victories. Aston Martin’s GT3-based challenger, which is closely derived from the new Vantage road car unveiled earlier this year at Silverstone, is built around Aston Martin’s proven bonded aluminium chassis and is powered by a fearsome twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 engine. And while it awaits its first victory at world championship level, the car has already proven itself in other categories and is increasingly competitive in the closely-contested LMGT3 class, which features no less than nine manufacturers. THoR (which competes on home ground for the first time since it joined WEC at Spa in 2023), raced to second place in the most recent WEC round – the 6 Hours of Sao Paolo – in Brazil, last month. The result meant its driver crew, comprised of team principal Ian James (GBR), Alex Ribeiras (ESP) and Daniel Mancinelli (ITA), closed the gap in the fight for second in the LMGT3 points standings. They head into COTA fourth, 20 points from second, and 45 off the lead, with a maximum of 91 available from the last three races. This performance follows another second place in the season-opening Qatar 1812 event and a brilliant if unrewarded showing in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, where the Aston Martin Vantage GT3 led for long periods of the event. D’station Racing has also recorded a podium result this season, finishing third in Qatar. Since then, the team has delivered a solid campaign with points finishes in every round, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans where the team recorded an important top ten finish in class with team owner Satoshi Hoshino stepping back in to the driver line-up. Hoshino’s seat is now re-occupied by Clément Mateu (FRA), who has contested all the rounds bar Le Mans. He is joined by Aston Martin’s most decorated active works driver, Marco Sørensen (DEN), a three-time FIA WEC champion in the GT classes and a Rolex 24 and 24 Hours of Le Mans class winner, and now the most recent Spa 24 Hours winner alongside fellow works drivers Nicki Thiim (DEN) and Mattia Drudi (ITA). Erwan Bastard (FRA), a French and European GT4 title-winner, completes the driving strength in the #777. The trio sit seventh in the championship standings, just 11 points behind THoR. Outside of WEC, momentum around the Aston Martin Vantage GT3 is already building as THoR’s IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship campaign ramps up. The US-based team extended its podium-run to five consecutive rounds at the Virginia International Raceway, with both its cars recording top-three class finishes in the 160-minute sprint race, on Sunday. Works driver Ross Gunn (GBR), who shares the GTD Pro #23 Aston Martin Vantage GT3 with Alex Riberas (ESP), closed in on the class points lead with third place, to add to the duo’s recent victories at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park [Mosport] and Watkins Glen. Gunn, currently second in the standings, is now just 17 points away from the GTD Pro class lead (less than the 30-point difference between finishing first and second) and with two races left to run at Indianapolis and Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta offering up a possible 770 points. Meanwhile former IMSA GTD champion Roman De Angelis and fellow Canadian team-mate Zacharie Robichon finished second in the GTD class with their #27 Aston Martin Vantage GT3 – this follows on from a third place at Road America last time out and a GTD class win at Mosport in mid-July. Adam Carter, Aston Martin Head of Endurance Motorsport, said: “The Aston Martin Vantage GT3 has established itself as a competitive force on the global GT landscape in a relatively short period of time. And, but for some significant misfortune might also already have an FIA WEC class victory to its name to stand alongside its Spa 24 Hours win and The Heart of Racing’s multiple class wins in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and D’station Racing’s SUPER GT class win in Japan. Historically, Aston Martin has been incredibly successful at COTA in WEC, and the ingredients are there with both THoR and D’station Racing for the new Vantage GT3 to continue that trend this weekend.” Official practice for the Lone Star Le Mans begins on Friday, 30 August at 1240 local time (1840 BST) with the race beginning at 1300 (1900 BST) on Sunday. The Cost of Making Calls: half of UK van drivers still admit to breaking mobile phone driving laws, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles study reveals

57% of UK van drivers still physically check their phones while driving, an offence under Regulation 110 of the Road Vehicles Regulations 1986, according to research from Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles This means the majority of van drivers are risking a £200 fine and six penalty points With the average number of hours van drivers spend in their vehicles increasing by 27.9% year-on-year, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles’ urges drivers to prioritise safety, offering a range of smart tech features to help drivers work on the go Milton Keynes, UK (22 August, 2024) – Over half (57%) of UK van drivers still physically check their mobile phones while driving1, according to Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles research. This is despite the most recent update to Regulation 110 of the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986, banning the use of all handheld devices behind the wheel and an increased fine of £200 fine and six penalty points. While the proportion of van drivers checking their phones has reduced by 7% versus 2023 – in which 64% of UK van drivers confessed to checking their phones2 – 1 in 10 still admit to not only doing so while driving, but doing so “often”.1 Demonstrating the scale and ongoing prevalence of the issue amongst the UK’s van drivers, a recently released Department for Transport survey found that van drivers are more than twice as likely to use their mobile phone while driving, compared to all other types of drivers.3 Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles’ research confirmed that the decision to ignore mobile phone driving laws is not the result of a lack of available hands-free technology. In fact, 98% of respondents stated that their vans have in-built technology to support hands-free driving, with almost all (93%) using the technology at least once during the working day.1 While it remains to be seen what’s causing so many drivers to continue breaking the law at some stage during the day, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles is urging van drivers to go hands-free while on the road. As the hours UK van drivers spend in their vehicles continue to increase – rising from an average 4.88 hours per day in 20222, to 6.24 hours in 20231 – it’s more important than ever that drivers make the most of the technology available. Doing so not only improves road safety, but also allows drivers to work on the go. To optimise customer convenience and safety, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles fits a Bluetooth® hands-free kit as standard across all its models. Paired with its range of digital services – including We Connect and App-Connect – which enable drivers to make calls, access apps and navigate via voice control, drivers can get back to business all without taking their eyes off the road. The survey also indicates that many van drivers are transitioning to such technology, with 82% making up to 10 hands-free calls per day.1 John Ricardo-Neto, Head of Product Planning at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, said: “While there’s still a large number of van drivers ignoring the mobile driving laws at some stage throughout the day, it’s positive to see that van drivers are, for the most part, using hands-free technology while on the road. Every new Volkswagen van is packed with useful in-cabin tech such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as the ability of voice control, allowing drivers to maintain their eyes, and focus, on the road at all times.” For more details on Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles’ award-winning range of products and services, or to find your nearest Van Centre, please visit www.volkswagen-vans.co.uk (ends) Notes to Editors1 Results are taken from a OnePoll survey of 1,000 UK van drivers, conducted in December 2023, covering 2023 calendar year, commissioned by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles.2 Results are taken from a OnePoll survey of 1,000 UK van drivers, conducted in February 2023, covering 2022 calendar year, commissioned by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles.3 Department for Transport survey, published May 2024, covering Autumn 2023. Take cover this Bank Holiday

Incorrect or no cover could leave you out of pocket Check your breakdown cover before setting off Almost half of claims due to invalid policy Whatever the weather this Bank Holiday, it’s vital drivers make sure they have bought the right breakdown cover, says leading provider Start Rescue. Drivers cannot rely on taking out cover after they have had a breakdown – it is fraudulent to buy insurance to cover an event that has already occurred. In June 2024, where Start Rescue was unable to provide assistance, nearly half (45%) of these incidents were due to customers not having purchased a breakdown policy, so no cover was in place. A further 15% were because customers did not buy the correct cover to include Home Assist, while 11.5% were not covered for recovery miles above the 10-mile local tow limit. A further 16% were down to the car not having a valid MoT or road tax, both a legal requirement. “Customers buy a 10-mile local tow recovery policy because they don’t normally venture very far, but they will receive a huge shock if they travel a longer distance this Bank Holiday and can’t get the vehicle repaired local to the breakdown,” says Lee Puffett, Managing Director of Start Rescue. He adds: “With many breakdown providers, once the mileage limit has been exceeded on a local tow policy, any extra miles plus additional call-outs for a relay if it’s a long distance will be payable by the customer. “At Start Rescue, we always try to find the most cost-effective solution for customers when service is limited or not covered by the policy that has been purchased, but sometimes these options become limited and expensive later in the day and into the evening.” It is essential to check your breakdown cover is still valid and upgrade if necessary before setting out this Bank Holiday. It can take 24 to 72 hours with some breakdown providers before new breakdown cover or a mid-term upgrade is active – potentially leaving drivers facing a big bill in the event of a breakdown. Always ensure you check the timings with your breakdown provider so cover is in place when you need it. Start Rescue requires just a 24-hour waiting period for a policy to be active or for any mid-term adjustment to become valid. Start Rescue has a 4.5-star rating on Trustpilot, a five-star Defaqto* rating and has achieved Which? Recommended Provider status for five years running. Start Rescue has also been awarded best Breakdown Cover provider in the Finder Customer Satisfaction Awards 2024 (www.finder.com), scoring 4.9 out of 5 for overall satisfaction with a 94% recommendation rate. In the What Car? Survey of Best Breakdown Cover, Start Rescue came top for best response time, reaching 77% of call-outs in 30 minutes to an hour and didn’t leave anyone waiting for more than two hours. Start Rescue also won best in the survey for performing temporary repairs that let people continue with their journeys. Launched in 2009, Start Rescue is an integral part of the nation’s fourth largest breakdown and recovery service, Call Assist, which now has more than two million UK customers. Hyundai Motor and Kia showcase innovative temperature control technologies to enhance comfort and efficiency

Hyundai Motor and Kia unveil three new temperature control technologies designed to enhance passenger comfort and energy efficiency in vehicles Nano Cooling Film lowers interior temperature by over 12°C to significantly improve in-vehicle conditions and reduce cabin cooling requirements Radiant Heating System provides quick, energy-efficient warmth to passengers, enhancing comfort during cold weather while extending vehicle driving range Metal-Coated Heated Glass uses world-first 48V tech for fast and energy-efficient window defrosting to improve visibility and therefore safety SEOUL, August 23, 2024 – Hyundai Motor Company and Kia Corporation unveiled three technologies designed to closely regulate vehicle interior temperature to deliver enhanced passenger comfort and energy efficiency at ‘Heat Tech Day’ in Seoul, South Korea. The event showcased Hyundai Motor and Kia’s research and development achievements in temperature control, a crucial aspect of passenger comfort. As vehicles evolve beyond simple transportation and become living spaces, the companies are developing various temperature control technologies to meet the evolving needs for comfort in mobility. These technologies not only improve comfort but also save energy, allowing efficient management of vehicle energy in the era of electrification. The three technologies unveiled were: Nano Cooling Film – this material significantly lowers interior temperature in hot weather when applied to vehicle glass. Radiant Heating System – quickly and efficiently raises the perceived temperature around passengers in cold weather. Metal-Coated Heated Glass – a world-first 48V system quickly transmits heat from the electrically powered metal coating to the glass, removing frost and moisture. All three technologies are at the level of technological maturity suitable for mass production. “The three technologies unveiled today are closer to customers than any other technology,” said Young Ho Jung, Vice President and Head of Thermal Energy Total Development Group at Hyundai Motor Company. “We are developing technologies to provide the most pleasant environment, considering every moment that customers experience in mobility.” Nano Cooling Film: reduces temperature by up to 12°CIn July 2023, Hyundai Motor and Kia showcased various advanced nano-material technologies – particularly Nano Cooling Film, which can significantly lower a vehicle’s interior temperature. During testing, Hyundai Motor and Kia each prepared multiple vehicles, applying Nano Cooling Film to one and leaving the other in its original state. Vehicles with regular glass and not equipped with Nano Cooling Film recorded an interior temperature of 48.5°C, compared with 36.0°C for the vehicles fitted with Nano Cooling Film, demonstrating a maximum temperature reduction of 12.5°C with the advanced technology applied. Nano Cooling Film not only blocks infra-red radiation from outside the vehicle, like traditional tinting films, but also allows heat to escape from inside the vehicle. It comprises three layers, including two that reflect solar energy and one that emits mid-infrared wavelength. It can lower interior temperatures by more than 12°C and can be used with existing tinting films without further impacting light transmission. Last April, Hyundai Motor also conducted a campaign called ‘Made Cooler by Hyundai’, in which it installed transparent Nano Cooling Film for free on around 70 vehicles in Pakistan, where tinting is legally prohibited. This led to a positive response from residents1. In June, Hyundai Motor and Kia appeared at Cannes Lions 2024, the world’s largest advertising festival. They were invited as official seminar speakers to introduce their Nano Cooling Film technology and discuss the campaign launched in Pakistan. This marked the first time Hyundai Motor, among car manufacturers, hosted an official technology seminar at the Cannes Lions. Underfloor Radiant Heating System warms passengers within minutes Hyundai Motor and Kia also showcased the Radiant Heating System, a technology designed to quickly warm passengers during winter. The Radiant Heating System uses a heating element that emits radiant heat towards passengers’ legs, quickly warming them during cold weather. Alongside the vehicle’s existing heating system, the Radiant Heating System could conserve up to 17 percent more energy to reach a desired temperature, also saving time to reach this condition; the system delivers warmth to the lower body within three minutes, greatly enhancing passenger comfort. Combined, the Radiant Heating System is expected to significantly extend the driving range of electric vehicles in winter by reducing energy used for climate control. The system comprises a high-temperature film-type heating element and a burn prevention system. The heating element, which can reach 110°C, is wrapped in a fabric material that emits infra-red rays and adjusts the heat to a comfortable level. A burn prevention system detects body contact and immediately lowers the temperature, improving safety by eliminating burn risks. On Kia’s Radiant Heating System-equipped EV9, nine heating panels are installed, including on the steering column base, driver’s door and center console, as well as the passenger door and glove box base. Hyundai Motor and Kia plan to incorporate the Radiant Heating System in future models. Metal-Coated Heated Glass: removes frost and moisture to improve visibility The pioneering Metal-Coated Heated Glass system quickly removes frost or moisture from a vehicle windshield during winter, offering improved visibility and increased safety compared with regular tungsten wire heating elements. Metal-Coated Heated Glass is invisible, providing a clear, undistorted view for occupants. The 48V system can completely defrost the glass surface within five minutes at -18°C, up to four times faster and consuming around 10 percent less energy compared with conventional air-conditioning systems. Additionally, on hot days, the metal coating can passively block at least 60 percent of solar energy, reducing cabin cooling requirement to significantly improve energy efficiency.
