Hyundai Motor and Kia showcase innovative temperature control technologies to enhance comfort and efficiency

Hyundai Motor and Kia unveil three new temperature control technologies designed to enhance passenger comfort and energy efficiency in vehicles Nano Cooling Film lowers interior temperature by over 12°C to significantly improve in-vehicle conditions and reduce cabin cooling requirements Radiant Heating System provides quick, energy-efficient warmth to passengers, enhancing comfort during cold weather while extending vehicle driving range Metal-Coated Heated Glass uses world-first 48V tech for fast and energy-efficient window defrosting to improve visibility and therefore safety SEOUL, August 23, 2024 – Hyundai Motor Company and Kia Corporation unveiled three technologies designed to closely regulate vehicle interior temperature to deliver enhanced passenger comfort and energy efficiency at ‘Heat Tech Day’ in Seoul, South Korea. The event showcased Hyundai Motor and Kia’s research and development achievements in temperature control, a crucial aspect of passenger comfort. As vehicles evolve beyond simple transportation and become living spaces, the companies are developing various temperature control technologies to meet the evolving needs for comfort in mobility. These technologies not only improve comfort but also save energy, allowing efficient management of vehicle energy in the era of electrification. The three technologies unveiled were: Nano Cooling Film – this material significantly lowers interior temperature in hot weather when applied to vehicle glass. Radiant Heating System – quickly and efficiently raises the perceived temperature around passengers in cold weather. Metal-Coated Heated Glass – a world-first 48V system quickly transmits heat from the electrically powered metal coating to the glass, removing frost and moisture. All three technologies are at the level of technological maturity suitable for mass production. “The three technologies unveiled today are closer to customers than any other technology,” said Young Ho Jung, Vice President and Head of Thermal Energy Total Development Group at Hyundai Motor Company. “We are developing technologies to provide the most pleasant environment, considering every moment that customers experience in mobility.” Nano Cooling Film: reduces temperature by up to 12°CIn July 2023, Hyundai Motor and Kia showcased various advanced nano-material technologies – particularly Nano Cooling Film, which can significantly lower a vehicle’s interior temperature. During testing, Hyundai Motor and Kia each prepared multiple vehicles, applying Nano Cooling Film to one and leaving the other in its original state. Vehicles with regular glass and not equipped with Nano Cooling Film recorded an interior temperature of 48.5°C, compared with 36.0°C for the vehicles fitted with Nano Cooling Film, demonstrating a maximum temperature reduction of 12.5°C with the advanced technology applied. Nano Cooling Film not only blocks infra-red radiation from outside the vehicle, like traditional tinting films, but also allows heat to escape from inside the vehicle. It comprises three layers, including two that reflect solar energy and one that emits mid-infrared wavelength. It can lower interior temperatures by more than 12°C and can be used with existing tinting films without further impacting light transmission. Last April, Hyundai Motor also conducted a campaign called ‘Made Cooler by Hyundai’, in which it installed transparent Nano Cooling Film for free on around 70 vehicles in Pakistan, where tinting is legally prohibited. This led to a positive response from residents1. In June, Hyundai Motor and Kia appeared at Cannes Lions 2024, the world’s largest advertising festival. They were invited as official seminar speakers to introduce their Nano Cooling Film technology and discuss the campaign launched in Pakistan. This marked the first time Hyundai Motor, among car manufacturers, hosted an official technology seminar at the Cannes Lions. Underfloor Radiant Heating System warms passengers within minutes Hyundai Motor and Kia also showcased the Radiant Heating System, a technology designed to quickly warm passengers during winter. The Radiant Heating System uses a heating element that emits radiant heat towards passengers’ legs, quickly warming them during cold weather. Alongside the vehicle’s existing heating system, the Radiant Heating System could conserve up to 17 percent more energy to reach a desired temperature, also saving time to reach this condition; the system delivers warmth to the lower body within three minutes, greatly enhancing passenger comfort. Combined, the Radiant Heating System is expected to significantly extend the driving range of electric vehicles in winter by reducing energy used for climate control. The system comprises a high-temperature film-type heating element and a burn prevention system. The heating element, which can reach 110°C, is wrapped in a fabric material that emits infra-red rays and adjusts the heat to a comfortable level. A burn prevention system detects body contact and immediately lowers the temperature, improving safety by eliminating burn risks. On Kia’s Radiant Heating System-equipped EV9, nine heating panels are installed, including on the steering column base, driver’s door and center console, as well as the passenger door and glove box base. Hyundai Motor and Kia plan to incorporate the Radiant Heating System in future models. Metal-Coated Heated Glass: removes frost and moisture to improve visibility The pioneering Metal-Coated Heated Glass system quickly removes frost or moisture from a vehicle windshield during winter, offering improved visibility and increased safety compared with regular tungsten wire heating elements. Metal-Coated Heated Glass is invisible, providing a clear, undistorted view for occupants. The 48V system can completely defrost the glass surface within five minutes at -18°C, up to four times faster and consuming around 10 percent less energy compared with conventional air-conditioning systems. Additionally, on hot days, the metal coating can passively block at least 60 percent of solar energy, reducing cabin cooling requirement to significantly improve energy efficiency. Hyundai Motor and Kia have applied for patents for Metal-Coated Heated Glass in major domestic and foreign markets, with plans to implement the technology in future vehicles. 1 See related video link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R9zXGsPBOlg&t=13s

The hunt for ‘Coal Scuttle’ – the first Aston Martin

Aston Martin Heritage Trust launches its search for ‘Coal Scuttle’ – the very first car created by the great British sports car marque Manufactured in 1914 – only a year after the company that would become Aston Martin was founded – ‘Coal Scuttle’ was sold by the firm in 1924 and later disappeared Retrospectively given chassis number A1, the car was nicknamed ‘Coal Scuttle’ because of its rudimentary styling that aped the look of the household item, ubiquitous at the time Thursday 22 August 2024: The search is on for a priceless piece of British luxury car brand Aston Martin’s earliest history. A1 was the very first car to be built by Bamford & Martin Ltd, the company that would quickly become Aston Martin. Nicknamed ‘Coal Scuttle’ because of its simple styling that was, to many, redolent of the ubiquitous fuel container that almost every home in the nation would have had a century ago, the car was created in the summer of 1914 and, over the course of the next ten years, helped the company’s founders publicise their business. However, Aston Martin sold its earliest model for the princely sum of £50 in 1924 and, not long after that, the car disappeared entirely. Now, 110 years after its manufacture and 100 years after its sale, the Aston Martin Heritage Trust (AMHT) is launching a global hunt for this priceless missing piece of the brand’s history. Ahead of the Trust’s annual festival, which this year takes place at the British Motor Museum, Gaydon, on Saturday 31 August, the AMHT is asking car enthusiasts around the world to check their garages, outhouses, barns and stores for any potential traces of the missing car. Trust Treasurer, Garry Taylor, said: “We are very fortunate here at the AMHT to have the oldest known Aston Martin in existence, now known as A3, along with extensive records from the earliest days of the company and priceless artefacts from across the history of the brand, but, to date, ‘Coal Scuttle’ has eluded us. “Now, as we prepare or our annual festival when hundreds of Aston Martin owners from across the world will join us for our annual celebration of the brand, we are appealing for car enthusiasts to help us find that very first car, or discover definitively what became of it.” Built in 1914, by a small team of engineers led by marque founders Lionel Martin and Robert Bamford, this first car was aspiring to be a high-quality sporting car rivalling the likes of Bugatti. The First World War interrupted its development, although Lionel Martin was still able to formally register the car as an ‘Aston-Martin’ on March 16, 1915. Bamford had fought in France during the war and, having survived both the conflict and the Spanish Flu pandemic, he opted to leave the business to concentrate on a quieter life with his wife and daughter, passing on his shareholding to Kate Martin, wife of his former business partner Lionel. As Bamford & Martin Ltd regrouped in 1919 it entered its lone car, ‘Coal Scuttle’, in the first available UK sporting event, the London to Edinburgh Trial. This was a true test of machinery, driving all the way on rough roads and tracks with all manner of pitfalls possible. Thankfully the car completed the event in good time, earning a Gold Medal in the process. ‘Coal Scuttle’ was constantly tested and developed throughout the early 1920s, racing at Brooklands and being driven all over the UK – often posing for photos at its stops, including a salmon fishing trip to Loch Awe in Scotland. The AMHT holds a significant collection of these images and closer examination reveals that the car had more than one set of front fenders, a variety of lamps, horns and mechanical upgrades during its busy life. Its endeavours have been carefully researched and recorded, first by the Registers of the Aston Martin Owners’ Club and, for the last quarter of a century, by the Aston Martin Heritage Trust. Its last known entry was its sale, for £50, in 1924. Then, the trail goes cold. £50 was a reasonable amount of money in the mid-1920s, so it is unlikely the car was scrapped at that point, but nothing else is known about its activities after that. Aston Martin company historian and AMHT Trustee, Steve Waddingham, takes up the story: “I am fascinated by this car and I have often wondered what might have happened to it. If it was eventually scrapped, did parts of it survive, such as the beautiful radiator housing? Being the first Aston Martin, the car lacked any external badges so, if the radiator was saved as a memento, is it hanging on a wall somewhere, unidentified? “Did the well-worn open body get replaced? Was the chassis used to build a ‘special’ or some sort? The oldest known Aston Martin, prototype A3, had survived for many years hidden under homemade bodywork. So, in a similar vein, did ‘Coal Scuttle’ live on in another form? Are the rusting remains in an orchard somewhere or hidden in a barn? Anything is possible.” Steve adds: “In what would have been, and may still be, its 110th year, we would love to know the whereabouts or fate of our very first car. We are asking enthusiasts to check their automobilia collections, outhouses, stores and, yes, even orchards! If anyone knows more about the car, or has unidentified automotive remains they think could be relevant, we would dearly love to hear about it.” Anyone who does feel they can shed more light on the whereabouts, or fate, of ‘Coal Scuttle’ is asked to contact that AMHT via its website: https://amht.org.uk/contact/ where tickets and further information about the 2024 AMHT Festival is also available: https://amht.org.uk/event/aston-martin-heritage-festival/ The AMHT, a charitable organisation formed in 1998, is dedicated to preserving, celebrating, and sharing the history of this iconic luxury British sports car brand.

Aston Martin Autosport BRDC Young Driver Joseph Loake stars in Aston Martin Aramco Formula One® Team Silverstone test

British rising star Loake receives prize test in Aston Martin Aramco Formula One® Team AMR22 race car 2023 AMABA winner impresses, completing 39 laps of the legendary Silverstone Grand Prix circuit 2023 winner is fourth driver rewarded with Aston Martin Autosport BRDC Award-winning F1 test, joining Johnathan Hoggard, Zak O’Sullivan and Luke Browning. Thursday, 22nd August 2024, Silverstone: British racing driver Joseph Loake made an impressive Formula 1 test debut when he drove an Aston Martin Aramco Formula One® Team car on Wednesday (21 August) as part of his prize for winning last year’s Aston Martin Autosport BRDC Young Driver of the Year Award [AMABA]. The 19-year-old completed 39 laps of Silverstone’s legendary Grand Prix circuit in an Aston Martin AMR22, similar to the cars four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel and current Aston Martin Aramco Formula One™ Team driver Lance Stroll raced during the 2022 FIA Formula 1® World Championship season. It was the British emerging talent’s first experience of driving an F1® car of any kind. The day began with two series of installation laps on the 3.66-mile long track (located across the road from the AMR Technology Campus) before continuing into a series of slick tyre runs. In total, Loake completed more than 225km running in the car in dry conditions. Loake, who finished third in the 2023 GB3 Championship before stepping up to FIA Formula 3 this year, sampled both hard and soft-compound Pirelli tyres across four further runs throughout the day aboard the 1.6-litre V6-engined car, which combined with a twin-energy hybrid retrieval system, can produce around 1000bhp. “It’s been incredible,” Loake said. “I knew it was going to be faster than anything I’d driven, but the grip and speed through the fast turns was absolutely astonishing – a whole level above anything I could have imagined. “The whole experience has been amazing and so different to racing a Formula 3 car. Walking into the garage and seeing so many people who are just there for you and your car, and then seeing your name on the halo really makes it dawn on you, ‘this is real; I’m going to drive a Formula 1® car. “But the Aston Martin Aramco Formula One® Team AMR22 is incredible. I’ve never known a car to be so responsive to every steering adjustment, every dab of throttle. It’s the most compliant car I’ve ever driven and that gives you confidence to push. Then your brain adjusts to the speed and you can focus on making the small adjustments that really help your laptime. Off-track the depth of data available is like nothing I’ve experienced and I’ll definitely be able to use some of the things I learnt to improve my driving for the rest of the season in F3. It was a really cool day and I’m pleased to say I left nothing on the table. “The whole experience has been amazing and the team were brilliant with me. I’m so grateful to everyone involved from Aston Martin, Autosport and the BRDC who have made this possible for young racing drivers.” Loake won the test, along with a cash prize of £200,000, full British Racing Drivers’ Club membership, an Arai helmet and a Jordan Bespoke personalised helmet bag, after beating three pre-selected rivals in a two-day assessment at Silverstone last year in various machinery including an Aston Martin Vantage GT3. Robert Sattler, F1 Evolution Programme Director, AMF1 Team added: “Joseph did a very good job on his first time drving a Formula 1 car. It’s a big step up from what he’s used to in Formula 3, but he dealt with everything extremely professionally and made a very good impression on the team with his attitude. The number of technical staff and other people that are involved in running a Formula 1 car can be a bit overwhelming for some, but Joseph settled in well and asked a lot of pertinent questions. It’s one thing to listen to the engineers after each run, but to take on board their feedback and translate it into what they do on-track really shows a young driver’s potential and Joseph did this very well. He had a lot of confidence to push the Aston Martin Aramco Fomula One® Team AMR22 hard straight away to try to find the limit and this is rare for somebody drving an F1® car for the first time. Joseph’s clearly a driver with a bright future in motor racing and we wish him all the best.”

The Club’s early years were focused on promoting the motor car and its place in society, which developed into motoring events such as the 1000 Mile Trial and the Tourist Trophy; the latter remains the oldest continuously competed-for motorsport trophy. The Club promoted the first pre-war and post-war Grands Prix at Brooklands in 1926 and Silverstone in 1948 respectively, while continuing to campaign for the rights of the motorist, including introducing the first driving licences. Today, the Club continues to develop and support automobilism while promoting its own motoring events including the RM Sotheby’s London to Brighton Veteran Car Run. The beautiful surroundings of the Rotunda, within the Royal Automobile Club in London, is the perfect place to honour a British motor manufacturing legacy that is often forgotten. Not only are these cars every inch a proper Austin, but they also provided employment to hundreds of people and brought joy to children around the world. “ The Austin J40Now famous for the children’s Settrington Cup at Goodwood Revival, the Austin J40 pedal car was originally made in England by the Austin Motor Company Limited, based on the 1948 A40 Devon and Dorset. Each car was manufactured in South Wales at a specially constructed factory, opened in 1949 under the name of the Austin Junior Car Factory. The business operated on a not-for-profit basis, existing purely for the employment of disabled coal miners who sought a new vocation after injury. Pedal cars were made from scrap metal taken from the Longbridge Austin factory, each built and painted in the same way as the actual cars would have been. Standard features included working headlights and horn, detachable wheels with Dunlop tyres, a realistic facia panel and leather or cloth seating. In addition, each car had an opening bonnet and boot, chrome bumpers, hub caps, grille, and boot handle. A total of 32,098 Austin J40 pedal cars were made before production ceased in September 1971, with cars being shipped around the world. Many featured in films for road safety or were used as fairground rides, but most were sold to families to be enjoyed by children, despite the purchase price equating to two weeks of the average salary at the time. Don’t drive tired on your bank holiday journeys, says GEM

Up to 20% of road crashes are related to fatigue Widespread programme of motorway roadworks likely to cause extra delay Get a good night’s sleep before a journey, share the driving and stay hydrated Stay safe on your bank holiday journeys this weekend by ensuring you’re properly rested before setting off, says breakdown and road safety organisation GEM Motoring Assist. The advice comes as families from across England and Wales make ready for bank holiday journeys to theme parks, seaside resorts and beauty spots. Experts say up to 20 per cent of all road collisions – and a quarter of all fatal crashes – are related to fatigue1. That’s why GEM is advising drivers to reduce risk by getting a good night’s sleep before a long journey and to build in breaks along the way. GEM head of road safety James Luckhurst says: “The bank holiday weekend is sure to see heavy traffic on much of our motorway network, as well as on routes to the coast and to tourist attractions. There’s also a large-scale programme of roadworks as additional emergency areas are constructed along long stretches of smart motorway, so do allow extra time for your journey. “Being tired when you’re driving raises the risk of a collision, especially if you’re driving early or late – or even through the night – to avoid the queues. “Watch out for the obvious warning signs that you’re tired. These include difficulty focusing on the driving task, fidgeting and frequent yawning. As fatigue grows, it will be harder to focus on driving. You may also find yourself drifting to the left or right, and unable to maintain a constant speed.” GEM offers a few simple tips for drivers to reduce the risk of a fatigue-related collision: Get a good night’s sleep before you drive a long journey. Build in time to reach your destination (or your night-stop) without rushing. Remove time pressures wherever possible. If possible, share the driving. Just check that your co-driver has the right insurance cover. Stay hydrated. This assists in keeping you awake and alert, particularly on long, hot journeys. Take a break of at least 15 minutes after every two hours or 100 miles. Get out of the car, do some exercise, stretch or walk. If necessary, have a caffeine drink or two to boost your alertness. If you are driving all day, schedule a proper hour-long break in the middle of the day, as this serves to split the day’s driving into two shorter and more manageable halves. Avoid driving alone for long distances if possible. Don’t press on into the night. Avoid driving at times when you would usually be asleep.

As the nation’s most beloved pet – with a third of Brits owning at least one dog2 – organising travel arrangements can be an annual challenge for UK holidaymakers. The UK’s staycationers plan on either walking (69%) or hiking (24%) during their holiday, making it the perfect getaway for both them and their pet pooch.1 Providing guidance and inspiration for dog owners this summer, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles’ Canine Campervan Guide combines tips and tricks for campervan getaways with pets, and a range of dog-friendly, lesser-explored destinations to discover. These include: Packing for your pooch: before setting off on the road, make sure to pack a lead and seatbelt harness, dog bed, towel, portable water bowl, food for the duration of the trip, and a goody bag of toys and treats to keep your dog entertained along the way. Make sure your dog is comfortable and secure: in case of any sudden stops, ensure your dog is suitably secured in the campervan, using a seatbelt harness or fixable crate. Plan frequent pit stops: encourage regular rest breaks and hydration stops, to give your dog a chance to stretch their legs. For further tips and dog-friendly locations to explore, the Canine Campervan Guide can be found here. As icons of freedom and adventure on the road, Volkswagen campervans are the ideal vehicles for a getaway with pets, with the space, facilities and home comforts for any dog-friendly adventure. The Volkswagen California 6.1 features a fully-fitted kitchen with a cool box, sink and stove kitchen unit and, as night falls, the campervan can be transformed to comfortably sleep four. With space for the entire family and their canine chum, the folding bench seat and swivelling front seats provide a highly flexible and adaptable interior, while integrated accessories – such as a stowable camping table and chairs – save on space when not in use. At 6.0-6.8m, the larger motorhome variant, the Grand California, features a transverse bed which sleeps two adults, and an optional over-cab bed with space for two children. A built-in wet room and fully-fitted kitchen, living and dining space, provide even more home comforts on the road, without ever having to leave their dogs’ side. Clever details, such as an external temperature controlled shower, allow Grand California users to hose sand or mud off their dogs after a long day of exploring, while easily accessibly storage cabinets and spacious interior provides plenty of room to comfortably store all the essentials for a dog-friendly adventure.
