Sunshine – finally – puts convertibles into Top 10 fastest sellers

Mercedes-Benz GLC revealed as the UK’s current fastest-selling used car taking just 11 days to leave retailers’ forecourts But convertibles enter Top 10 fastest sellers as sunseekers seek open-top driving on better weather Cars selling the fastest in Scotland but lingering the longest in London 27th June 2024 – Drivers have finally rediscovered an appetite for soft tops following the belated arrival of the British summer, according to the latest data from Auto Trader. Figures from the UK’s largest automative platform showed Mercedes-Benz’ C-Class convertible (petrol, 3-5-years) and the sporty Mazda MX-5 RF (petrol, 3-5-years) both selling in around 16 days on average – marking the first appearance for convertibles among the fastest sellers in 2024 following the wettest Spring since 1986. Even so, consumer demand for convertibles is still down 5.6% year on year compared to June 2023, which was the hottest June on record. By contrast, temperatures this year in “flaming” June were chilled by an Arctic jet stream in the first half of the month. Convertibles also have some way to go before knocking SUVs off the top of the list, where demand has shot up 27% on last year. The Mercedes-Benz GLC (diesel, aged 1-3 years) is currently the fastest-selling used car, taking an average of just 11 days to leave UK forecourts, three times faster than the current national average of 29 days. On average, SUVs are taking around 27 days to sell. More broadly and underpinning the very high levels of consumer demand in the market, used cars are currently selling three days faster than in June last year. In fact, based on the activity of the circa 85 million visits to Auto Trader last month, demand for used cars is up circa 13% year-on-year. Highlighting the nuance of the retail market, volume models are currently taking around 28 days to sell, versus 30 for premium marques. What’s more, middle-aged used cars are currently the quickest age cohort to sell, with 3–5-year-old cars leaving forecourts in just 26 days, whilst 5- 10-year-old cars are taking 27. Those under a year old, are lingering on forecourts the longest, taking 35 days. This is no doubt due to the significant discounts retailers and brands are currently applying to brand new cars, particularly for the growing array of electric vehicles. Since June last year, average discounts applied to brand-new cars have risen from 6.4% to 8.8%, with almost eight in 10 new cars now offering some level of discount. On a regional level, retailers in Scotland are seeing the fastest average speed of sale of all the UK regions, with used cars north of the border taking a mere 24 days to sell. It’s five days faster than the current national average and eight days faster than London, which has the slowest speed of sale of all UK regions, with used cars taking a comparatively lengthy 32 days to shift. Commenting, Richard Walker, Auto Trader’s Data & Insights director, said: “The speed at which used cars sell is an accurate barometer of the strength of the used car market and our data suggests it remains in very robust health as we enter the summer months. With such nuance in the market, the analysis also serves as a good reminder of the importance of looking at data on a granular level. A high-level view would suggest convertibles are under performing, but a quick look under the bonnet reveals there’s plenty of models bucking the overall trend with the final arrival of summer.” Fastest-selling used cars between 27th May – 24th June Rank Make Model Body Type Fuel Type Age Cohort (years) Avg. days to sell 1 Mercedes-Benz GLC Class SUV Diesel 1 to 3 Years 11 2 CUPRA Formentor SUV Petrol 3 to 5 Years 12 3 Vauxhall Grandland SUV Petrol up to 1 Year 13 4 Mercedes-Benz GLB Class SUV Petrol 1 to 3 Years 13 5 SEAT Leon Hatchback Petrol Plug-in Hybrid 3 to 5 Years 13.5 6 Volvo XC40 SUV Petrol Plug-in Hybrid 3 to 5 Years 14.5 7 Kia Sportage SUV Diesel Hybrid 1 to 3 Years 15 8 Peugeot 508 Hatchback Petrol 3 to 5 Years 15 9 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Convertible Petrol 3 to 5 Years 15.5 10 Mazda MX-5 RF Convertible Petrol 3 to 5 Years 16 Slowest-selling used cars between 27th May – 24th June Rank Make Model Body Type Fuel Band Age Cohort (years) Average days to sell 1 Porsche Taycan Estate Electric up to 1 Year 111 2 Mazda Mazda2 Hatchback Petrol Hybrid up to 1 Year 106 3 Kia XCeed SUV Petrol Plug-in Hybrid 1 to 3 Years 106 4 Audi A5 Coupe Petrol up to 1 Year 98 5 Volvo C40 SUV Electric 1 to 3 Years 93.5 6 Lexus UX SUV Electric 1 to 3 Years 91 7 Porsche 911 Convertible Petrol 1 to 3 Years 90 8 Audi Q4 e-tron SUV Electric up to 1 Year 86 9 Volkswagen Passat Saloon Petrol 3 to 5 Years 84 10 Porsche Taycan Saloon Electric up to 1 Year 82

With 40 years of history under its belt, the legendary high-performance saloon from BMW M GmbH is entering its seventh generation with an electrified drive system for the first time. The model-specific M HYBRID system gives the new BMW M5 (electric power and fuel consumption, weighted, combined: 166.2 – 176.6 mpg and 25.5 – 25.0 kWh/ 62 miles according to WLTP; CO2 emissions, weighted, combined: 39 – 37 g/km as per WLTP; fuel consumption with discharged battery: 27.4 – 27.7 mpg; CO2 classes: weighted, combined B, with discharged battery G) a maximum output of 727 hp and a peak torque of 1,000 Nm. The combination of a high-revving V8 engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology and an electric motor, plus power transfer courtesy of an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission and M xDrive all-wheel drive, enables acceleration of 0 to 62 mph in 3.5 seconds. The imposing power delivery and emotionally engaging performance experience served up by the new BMW M5 are accompanied by a new interpretation of the high-performance car design for which M is renowned. Prominent wheel arch and side skirt extensions, the sculptural front apron and model-specific surfacing around the C-pillar – including an embossed “M5” logo for the Hofmeister kink – give the car an athletic appearance that helps to differentiate it more clearly than ever from the BMW 5 Series Saloon. At the same time, an unusually high proportion of surfaces painted in body colour create a sleek appearance with stylish references to its superior dynamic abilities. The exterior design – like the ambience of the luxurious interior, which is enhanced with M-specific features – accentuates the multi-layered character of the new BMW M5. Its sense of poise and assurance is fuelled by vast reserves of power that can be summoned at any time. Kept discreetly in reserve during relaxed, electric-only cruises, this performance comes to the fore as the BMW M5 reveals the “sport saloon” side to its personality over longer distances – and is unleashed in full on the track. The M HYBRID system, power transmission and chassis technology are tuned to give the M5 specific performance characteristics, ensuring transverse and longitudinal dynamics unparalleled in this market segment. Together with its similarly outstanding elasticity, the new BMW M5 takes M performance to a new level. BMW Retailers across the UK are taking orders for the new BMW M5 from today, with the first appearance and world premiere of the vehicle taking place at Goodwood Festival of Speed in July 2024. Production of the new BMW M5 will begin at BMW Group Plant Dingolfing in the same month, with the first UK customer deliveries from November 2024, which will also be accompanied by the introduction of the new BMW M5 Touring. The most important sales regions for the high-performance saloon are North America and Europe, with the USA expected to be the single biggest individual market by some distance, followed by the UK, Poland, Germany, South Korea, Japan and China. M HYBRID drive system in the new BMW M5: intoxicating performance, impressive electric range. The M HYBRID drive system in the new BMW M5 brings a 4.4-litre V8 engine with classic high-revving character together with an electric motor, whose performance characteristics are tuned specifically for the M5 and which is integrated into the eight-speed M Steptronic transmission. The combustion engine benefits from cutting-edge M TwinPower Turbo technology, a cross-bank exhaust manifold and optimised oil separation. It develops maximum output of 585 hp and peak torque of 750 Nm. The electric motor delivers a maximum output of 197 hp and a nominal torque of 280 Nm. However, thanks to a pre-gearing stage, the effective torque at the transmission input is boosted to 450 Nm. The combination of combustion engine and electric motor adheres to the same principle as the drive system in the BMW M Hybrid V8 endurance racing machine. The ability of the electric motor to generate its power instantly and the intelligently controlled interplay of the combustion engine and motor ensure the M HYBRID system responds without delay to every movement of the accelerator. The linear power delivery typical of BMW M models is found here in particularly compelling form. The eight-cylinder engine can spin to a maximum 7,200 rpm as the new BMW M5 treats its driver to the sensation of relentless power development into the…

Nissan engineering chief David Moss wins prestigious award from Autocar

David Moss from Nissan Technical Centre Europe receives prestigious Mundy Award in recognition of services to automotive engineering Honour recognises his involvement with the engineering and development of the pioneering Nissan Qashqai Now Senior Vice President for Research & Development, David joined Nissan in 1989 and has overseen all three generations of the Qashqai since its launch in 2007 A long-standing and hugely respected engineer in Nissan’s research and development operation has won one of the automotive industry’s most prestigious awards. David Moss, Senior Vice President for Research and Development across Nissan’s Africa, Middle East, India, Europe and Oceania region, has been presented with the Mundy Award for Engineering by the automotive title Autocar. The award recognises his involvement with development of the Nissan Qashqai, which has grown to become one of the UK’s most influential and popular vehicles since its launch in 2007. Mark Tisshaw, Autocar editor, said: ‘‘Many congratulations to David Moss on receiving the Mundy Award for Engineering at the 2024 Autocar Awards. Competition in this category is always fierce and David should be very proud of his achievement. ‘‘This award is given with Qashqai very much in mind but David’s work includes many other projects. He has a real depth of expertise and experience, not to mention notable leadership and management qualities, that we’re only too delighted to recognise.’’ Moss, who – to quote Autocar – has enjoyed a stellar career with the Japanese manufacturer, was selected for the honour largely because of his work in creating and developing the pioneering British-built Nissan Qashqai. More than four million examples of the car have been produced since its arrival in 2007 and it is a regular fixture among the UK’s best-selling cars. Receiving the Mundy Award for Engineering at the 2024 Autocar Awards. David said: ‘‘This is a huge honour, not to mention a big surprise, and I’d like to express my thanks to Autocar for recognising my contribution in this way. ‘‘However, I see this award as recognition of the efforts put in by the many talented colleagues I have had the pleasure to work with down the years in developing some great cars, especially our flagship Qashqai – this award is for them just as much as it is for me. The Qashqai is such an important car for Nissan and its success is down to the supreme talents of thousands of people across the UK, Spain, Belgium and Germany – the designers, engineers and of course the team building it in Sunderland. It’s a true success story in which I’m delighted to have played my part.” Based at Nissan Technical Centre Europe in Cranfield, Bedfordshire, David joined Nissan as a graduate engineer in 1989. Rising through the ranks at the company, he took on roles in Europe and Japan involving body design, interior and HVAC engineering, plus corporate planning. He’s proud to say he has been involved in all three generations of Qashqai – from concept stages to the start of production and is delighted to have seen the model evolve and become synonymous with the crossover segment. But it’s not just his track record that David can be proud of – his team are also playing a vital role in the company’s transition to electric vehicles, with a mission to reduce emissions and introduce a wave of new connectivity and safety technologies to the market. Under Nissan’s EV36Zero project, the UK government has already awarded £15m of funding for a £30m collaborative project led by Nissan. It will strengthen the technical expertise and R&D zero emission vehicle capability of the Nissan Technical Centre (NTCE) in Cranfield, Bedfordshire, increasing opportunities for securing additional UK R&D investment in future vehicle models. The funding also forms part of Nissan’s wider plans to create a world-first EV manufacturing ecosystem in the UK, enabled by investment of up to £3bn, and delivering renewable energy infrastructure, battery gigafactories and future electric versions of Qashqai, Juke and LEAF. The Mundy Award is named after Harry Mundy, Autocar’s very first technical editor and a prolific figure in British engineering history.

Rolls-Royce supports local schoolchildren at Greenpower ‘Gathering of the Goblins’

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars continues its longstanding support for The March CE Primary School at the 2024 Greenpower ‘Gathering of Goblins’ Children in Years 5 and 6 designed and built four electric racing cars with support and guidance from Rolls-Royce Designers, Interns and Apprentices Every year, more than 10,000 school and university students take part in the Greenpower national competitions aimed at encouraging young people to pursue their interests in STEM subjects National final will be held at Goodwood Motor Circuit, close to the Home of Rolls-Royce, on 30 June 2024 “The Greenpower ‘Gathering of Goblins’ is a fantastic event that aims to fire young people’s imagination and bring STEM subjects to life through the excitement of motorsport. We’ve supported teams from The March CE Primary School over many years, with children working alongside our Designers and Apprentices to design and build some truly amazing racing cars. For us, this is both a link to our heritage – the marque first established its reputation as ‘the best car in the world’ through motor trials and racing – and a vital investment in the long-term future of engineering and manufacturing in the UK. We wish the teams every success.”Andrew Ball, Head of Corporate Relations and Heritage, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has continued its longstanding partnership with The March CE Primary School in preparation for this year’s Greenpower ‘Gathering of Goblins’, the UK’s premier event for electric-powered racing cars designed, built, and driven by schoolchildren. The competition is run by Greenpower Education Trust, a UK-based charity whose mission is to enthuse young people about science and engineering by challenging them to design, build and race an electric car. It supplies age-appropriate kit cars that can be built in schools, colleges, or group settings, and then raced in one of three categories at Greenpower events, culminating in an international final. In the UK, the competition attracts over 10,000 students, from primary school age through to university, in more than 700 teams. Similar Greenpower-licensed programmes also run in Europe and the USA. For several years, pupils from Years 5 and 6 at The March CE Primary School, which neighbours the Home of Rolls-Royce at Goodwood, have taken part in the ‘Formula Goblin’ category for children aged 9-11. The marque originally funded one kit car for the after-school STEM Club, but this proved so overwhelmingly popular that it now supports a fleet of four. The chassis and powertrain are supplied by Greenpower and are standardised to ensure a level playing field. However, teams have complete freedom to determine the form and finish of the bodywork that sits on top. In a unique partnership, The March CE Primary School teams work with specialists from Rolls-Royce Motor Cars to develop their designs and bring them to life. As in previous years, the children created a range of bold, imaginative concepts for their cars around a specified theme, which in 2024 was ‘Elements’. They also learned more about the design process from Rolls-Royce designers, who translated their drawings into full digital renders, exactly as they would for a new model or client commission. With the four designs finalised, Apprentices and Interns from the Home of Rolls-Royce at Goodwood attended the STEM Club to help the children build their cars, incorporating some of the actual materials used in Rolls-Royce motor cars. The Apprentices also assisted with driver training, test-driving and pit-stop practice in preparation for race day. The teams will be among those lining up for the race on 30 June, which takes place at the Goodwood Motor Circuit, less than a mile from the school and the Home of Rolls-Royce. The Oxford, UK based firm has developed an easy to install ‘plug and play’ EV conversion kit for the celebrated model – which famously starred in the Back to the Future franchise. The exhaustively developed ‘drop-in’ package is available now via Electrogenic’s carefully vetted global installer network – which includes numerous partners serving the United States. The DeLorean EV conversion package, which is entirely reversible, uses Electrogenic’s proprietary, market-leading EV powertrain technology to revolutionise the DMC-12, transforming the driving experience with smooth, effortless electric performance. Steve Drummond, Electrogenic CEO, said: “Since founding Electrogenic in 2018, we’ve seen a great deal of interest from around the world in the prospect of a DeLorean EV conversion. With its sci-fi design – still jaw-dropping over 40 years on – and underwhelming engine, it really is the perfect candidate for conversion to electric drive. We’re now delighted to reveal our ‘plug and play’ conversion package to the world. Developed entirely in-house using our proprietary technology, it gives the DMC-12 the sporting performance its futuristic shape always deserved.” The DeLorean package is the latest addition to Electrogenic’s rapidly growing range of ‘plug and play’ EV conversion kits, which already includes options for the Land Rover Defender, Jaguar E-type, classic Mini and Porsche 911. The company is also known for its bespoke conversions. Recent projects include a 1929 Rolls-Royce Phantom II electrified for Hollywood star Jason Momoa. Electrogenic also uses its sector-leading technical knowledge to develop ‘turn-key’ EV drivetrain solutions for car manufacturers (OEMs) and Defence applications. The DeLorean DMC-12 BackstoryThe DMC-12 was conceived by the former General Motors executive John DeLorean in the late 1970s. A visionary drawn to the very latest technologies, DeLorean was determined to build a different type of sports car – one that was not only sporting and stunning to look at, but also responsibly and ethically produced. Styled by the legendary Italian, Giugiaro, the gullwing door equipped DMC-12 was engineered to be sustainable from the get-go. It used a pioneering combination of composites and stainless-steel panels – ensuring it wouldn’t rot and succumb to rust like many cars of the time; DeLorean wanted the cars to last forever. Three quarters of DMC-12s ever produced are still on the roads today, a remarkable record for a 40 plus year old car. DeLorean turned to the great engineering minds at Lotus to realise his vision, before setting up shop in late ‘70s Belfast after receiving significant investment from the UK government. The hastily assembled team worked at an unprecedented pace to get the DMC-12 ready, battling myriad challenges along the way – from extreme financial and time pressures to the fire-bombing of the factory during flare ups in sectarian violence. Despite all this, the DMC-12 was designed, built and certified for sale in the US in just 28 months, a record that would stand for some time. Certain compromises were made along the way, with the V6 engine – sourced from Peugeot-Renault-Volvo (PRV) – cited by many as a particular weak point. After being modified to satisfy the US emission regulations, it produced just 130 hp – rather lacking for a sports car. Nevertheless, after going on sale in mid 1981, the outlandishly styled DMC-12 was initially a great success, before the economy faltered in the recession of the early 1980s and sales slowed. Over 9,000 of the cars were produced before the DeLorean business eventually folded at the end of 1982. By then the DMC-12 had established itself as one of the most recognisable automotive creations; its legacy was further cemented by its starring role as the time machine in the Back to The Future films. It remains one of the ultimate automotive icons of the 20th century, with a passionate community of owners and fans the world over. Electrifying an IconElectrogenic, known for its sympathetic EV conversions, has now transformed the DMC-12, giving it the effortless, state of the art powertrain the stunning shape always deserved. Envisaged from the outset to be a sustainable sports car, thanks to Electrogenic’s ‘drop-in’ EV conversion kit, the DMC-12 can now fully deliver on that brief. The electrified DMC-12 emits no tailpipe emissions and is future proofed for an age of low-carbon motoring. Electrogenic’s team of engineers, programmers and fabricators have carefully engineered an electric powertrain solution to fit within the existing architecture of the car, using CAD modelling and clever packaging to maximise the available space. Designed from the outset to be straightforward to install, the genuinely ‘plug-and-play’ DeLorean conversion features 43kWh of brand-new OEM grade batteries fitted in place of the fuel tank under the front luggage compartment, and above the motor in the rear. The design uses the company’s proprietary, ultra-efficient, battery packaging system to deliver unrivalled energy density. As with all Electrogenic conversions, the original structure of the car is entirely preserved; nothing is cut, and all the modifications are entirely reversible. The batteries feed a motor sending 160kW of power and 310Nm of torque into a fixed ratio gearbox and transaxle, delivering 3,200Nm to the rear the wheels. The conversion can be applied to both manual and automatic DMC-12s. Thanks to the enhanced power and instant torque, the electrified…
