Miles of smiles at SGMW heritage driving day

A new take on an old favourite made the Southern Group of Motoring Writers’ annual heritage day a most memorable one. This was the seventh time SGMW had held the event at the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu in Hampshire. This year the group also opened it up as a driving day for new manufacturers which do not have heritage fleets. SGMW secretary Chris Rees, the driving force behind the event, said: “This is my personal highlight. I love the heritage driving day.” An excellent turnout saw 20 SGMW members joined by 29 PR friends representing 14 brands. They enjoyed driving a total of 32 cars, including a dozen heritage models, with a varied mix of the latest electric vehicles, rugged off-roaders and pick-up trucks and a stunning array of classic heritage models. Abarth – 500e Convertible. BYD – Dolphin, Atto 3 and Seal. Fiat – 600 Hybrid and 600e. Ford – Capri L, Racing Puma and latest Puma. Genesis – GV60, electrified GV70 and electrified G80. Honda – Civic Type R (FK2), S2000 and latest Civic Hybrid. Ineos – Grenadier 3.0 petrol and 3.0 diesel. Isuzu – D-Max AT35 Arctic and D-Max AT35 Basecamp. Jeep – Avenger MHEV. Kia – Stinger GT-S, Picanto Strike Mark 1 and latest Picanto GT-Line. Lexus – LBX. Mazda – MX-5 Mark 1 and MX-30 R-EV Edition R. Toyota – first generation Prius Hybrid and latest Corolla Excel 1.8 Hybrid. Volvo – P1800, 262C, 850 T-5R and XC90 V8, all heritage models. SGMW members also brought their own cars to display on the day. The classic stars were a vintage Volkswagen Beetle Herbie tribute, a stunning Alfa Romeo Giulia 1300 Ti and an immaculate Mazda Eunos. The modern era was also well represented, with a varied mix of cars including an Alpine A110, Volkswagen Polo Blue GT, Jaguar XF Sportbrake, Saab 9-3 convertible and Abarth 595. As is tradition, attendees voted for their favourite member’s car and manufacturer’s car of the day. Stu Bird’s Beetle Douglas Special took the member’s best car prize, pipping Julian Rendell’s Alfa. The Beetle stole the show with its looks, sound and wealth of fun, intricate details harking back to the original movie star car. It completed a hat-trick of wins for Stu whose Volkswagen T2 Westfalia camper van won last year and his SEAT Terra van in 2022. Volvo’s P1800 was best manufacturer’s car, a worthy winner that had members lining up to drive it all day long. The SGMW quiz went down to a tiebreak question, with David Wilkins the victor over Peter Nunn. The heritage driving day is as popular with PRs as it is SGMW members, a chance to chat and drive cars in a relaxed setting. Simon Branney, Genesis Motor UK head of PR and communications, said: “Definitely one of the highlights of the summer, if not the whole year, is the SGMW heritage driving day. “Even though there are no Genesis heritage products, as we have only been going for three years, the group has been very welcoming and supportive of the Genesis brand, product and team. “It’s a super-relaxed day with super-friendly journalists and even super-friendly PR colleagues – it’s an easy win for both the group and the PRs that get to come to it.” Tom Lynch, Volvo Car UK head of communications, said: “We have a deep and rich heritage stretching back nearly 100 years but it is also lovely to see people in the industry driving each other’s cars and getting you guys out in the cars. “It is a good, enjoyable day out and that is why we like to come to your heritage day.” Will Rees, Kia UK press officer, said: “It is a nice, chilled-out event and a great day out of the office. “It is about getting to chat with other PRs and a lot of SGMW members we don’t see regularly on driving days. It is nice to catch up with everyone.” Rachel Goodwin, head of PR for BYD in the UK, said: “It was a great day. It is really useful for PRs to drive competitors’ products and useful for us to keep in touch and see all you guys and making sure everybody is driving our cars. “We are trying to build a brand so we need to be in as many places as possible.” Graeme Fudge, Mazda UK PR director, said: “It is a nice day out and you get to drive a lot of competitors’ cars. Beaulieu is also a lovely location.” Memorable motors, lots of laughs and a great setting make SGMW heritage day a winner. Bentley to help the kelp with support for Californian environmental project

Bentley Environmental Foundation to fund US kelp forest initiative Kelp restoration programme focussed on key coastal sites Lab-grown Sunflower Stars project reduces the proliferation of Purple Urchins that feed off living Kelp Initiative announced at customer beach dinner hosted by Bentley Environmental Foundation during Monterey Car Week Bentley Environmental Foundation launched in 2023 as part of the company’s Beyond100 strategy Californian project driven by Foundation launch partner SeaTrees (Crewe/Monterey, 19 August 2024) Bentley Motors today announced funding for a major environmental initiative off the Californian coast run by SeaTrees – a founding partner of the newly-formed Bentley Environmental Foundation. The project will help restore and monitor kelp forests across three key sites, and will reintroduce Sunflower Stars to save California’s declining Kelp forests. The project was revealed during a beach dinner for Bentley customers at Monterey Car Week in California. It was hosted by the Bentley Environmental Foundation, set up last year as part of the company’s Beyond100 strategy as a long-term commitment to support global sustainability issues. More than 90 per cent of kelp has been lost in California due to climate change, a trend exacerbated by the disappearance of sunflower stars and the proliferation of purple sea urchins. An innovative element of the project will be to grow Sunflower Stars under laboratory conditions. The invertebrates are a natural predator to urchins and, once released into the sea, will help regulate their population and maintain the balance of the trophic food web. Kelp is critical to climate change as it absorbs carbon dioxide from both the atmosphere and the ocean, and is a natural habitat for hundreds of marine creatures. The large brown algae also helps protect coastal communities and offers cultural and recreational value. The Foundation project will support SeaTrees in collaboration with Reef Check California and the Sunflower Star Laboratory. Their marine ecosystem projects create the right conditions for kelp to grow and support research into kelp forest recovery. SeaTrees will also promote the work of both bodies to a wider audience, encouraging others in similar initiatives. The California project is just the latest step in Bentley’s sustainability journey towards a carbon neutral future. The Bentley Environmental Foundation already partners with the Californian-based non-profit Sustainable Surf, which is the organisation behind SeaTrees, to help regenerate the health of our ocean planet. A project in Kenya has involved the planting of one million mangrove trees, with seagrass and kelp regeneration projects in Portugal and Spain too. Wayne Bruce, Chief Communications and DEI Officer, responsible for the Bentley Environmental Foundation, said: “At Bentley, we are committed to driving forward innovative environmental initiatives and solutions. By partnering with SeaTrees and other pioneering organisations, we are bringing to life our long-term commitment to preserve and regenerate our planet for future generations. The Foundation’s support for the kelp restoration project in California underscores this commitment, and will continue to help transform and conserve the world’s vitally important blue carbon ecosystems. This initiative is testament to our Beyond100 strategy and our ongoing commitment to global sustainability, with the Foundation as a key pillar for catalysing positive environmental change.” Michael Stewart, Co-Founder and Director of SeaTrees, added:“Partnering with the Bentley Environmental Foundation is a game-changer for our kelp restoration efforts in California. The funding and support from Bentley allow us to tackle the urgent crisis facing our kelp forests with a multifaceted approach. Their support not only aids in the recovery of crucial marine habitats but also underscores the importance of innovative collaborations in addressing climate change and protecting our oceans for future generations.”

BMW and UK National Parks Celebrate Achievements to Date of Recharge in Nature Partnership

A year and a half in, BMW UK and UK National Parks are celebrating the progress their Recharge in Nature partnership is driving for people and planet 78 new electric vehicle (EV) charge points have now been installed across seven of the UK’s 15 National Parks Projects supported by the Recharge in Nature project have boosted wellbeing and nature restoration in Dartmoor, Eryri (Snowdonia), South Downs and North York Moors National Parks, with further projects planned for this year at other National Parks BMW and UK National Parks are celebrating the progress achieved to date by its Recharge in Nature partnership, revealing the project’s impacts for the electric vehicle (EV) charging network, nature restoration and wellbeing. The Recharge in Nature Project will see BMW UK invest a total of around £1 million in biodiversity and community projects, as well as putting all 15 of the UK’s National Parks firmly on the EV map by installing 135 new charging points, with a further investment of around £1 million. Already 18 months into the partnership, 78 new electric vehicle charge points have been installed in the Lake District, Peak District, Yorkshire Dales, North York Moors, Dartmoor, and Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park. BMW is working closely with UK National Parks to ensure that these charging points bring as much benefit as possible to locals and visitors by being placed in high traffic areas or areas where infrastructure is lacking. So far, the newly installed charging points have saved over 42 tonnes1 of CO2, according to Pod Point data, comparing the electric driving they have enabled to equivalent petrol or diesel miles1. The nature restoration and community impact projects are suggested and delivered by the National Parks, ensuring BMW’s support is going exactly where it’s needed most. For example, in the South Downs National Park, visitors could be more likely to spot frogs, toads, dragonflies and hedgehogs this year, thanks to the project’s work to restore 10 vital dew ponds. Due to hotter, drier summers, 70 per cent of South Downs National Park’s ponds were in a poor condition or had disappeared completely. In Eryri National Park (Snowdonia), beautiful Llyn Tegid – the largest natural freshwater lake in Wales – is now better protected against pollution. Through engagement with local farmers, Recharge in Nature has supported a range of natural flood management initiatives including creating three new dew ponds and eight leaky dams, and planting over 20,000 new trees. These measures help reduce the speed of rainwater run-off and so lower the amount of phosphates leaching into the lake, which would damage its delicate ecosystem and encourage the growth of algae. This will help Llyn Tegid stay healthy for recreation and tourism, and for precious wildlife like the glutinous snail – a tiny creature that’s only found here. Young people have been at the heart of a project funded in the North York Moors National Park, where they have improved their wellbeing, employability and potential to become tomorrow’s conservationists through 3,000 hours of volunteering. In addition, funding for a new Youth Engagement Ranger in Dartmoor National Park has helped give 1,329 young people, many of whom might otherwise not have opportunities to visit the Park, a chance to experience and explore the great outdoors. More creative initiatives lie ahead this year. The seeds of a temperate rainforest will be sprouting in Exmoor National Park to support nature recovery, carbon capture, water systems, soil and wildlife. Building on successful work piloted by local NHS Trusts, more people will have a chance to experience the wellbeing benefits of nature in the Peak District National Park through the ‘Peaks of Health’ project. It will work alongside community-based health and wellbeing organisations to help combat barriers to accessing the countryside including lack of transport, social isolation, older age or physical and mental health challenges. Meanwhile a project in the New Forest National Park is engaging local young people in nature, encouraging them to be future custodians of the Park. Access and more sustainable travel are the focus of two further Recharge in Nature projects. In Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, volunteers and visitors will have a new wheelchair accessible electric bus service. In Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park, visitors and residents will find it easier to access some of the area’s most scenic locations this summer thanks to a new shuttle bus service stopping through busy visitor locations seven days a week, up to eight times a day. The service will support more people to travel by public transport and mean less congestion at the Park. Finally, in Northumberland National Park, local communities and visitors will be able to take part in activities that highlight the Park’s aims of conserving and enhancing nature and taking climate action, as two new Nature Rangers are appointed thanks to Recharge in Nature funding. Guy Griffiths, one of the recently onboarded Nature Rangers at Northumberland National Park, said: “The BMW Recharge in Nature funding has opened up a fantastic opportunity for the other new ranger and I, as we embark on a career in the environment sector with National Parks. The Nature Ranger roles provide excellent experience in connecting people with nature and a wealth of training and development opportunities which give us real hands-on experience. Our aim is to protect Northumberland National Park and create a welcoming Park for everyone visiting this summer.” Pembrokeshire Coast National Park volunteers and visitors will have a new wheelchair accessible electric bus service, with another bus service being planned for Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park. Finally for this year, a project in the New Forest National Park will support local young people to discover, understand and act in ways that will make a positive difference to the future of the landscape. Graham Biggs, Corporate Communications Director, BMW UK, said: “It’s a pleasure to reflect on Recharge in Nature’s successes so far and to celebrate the tangible impacts of this partnership. In the months ahead we are looking forward to our continued investment in driving more locally delivered biodiversity and community projects, across…

A feast for the senses: upgrade for the Audi RS 3

Sporty exterior: sharper appearance, striking diffuser, motorsport-inspired wheels, and carbon details Enhanced vehicle dynamics: new standard tyres and more precise tuning of chassis control systems for optimized cornering Progressive interior: RS sport seats for excellent lateral support, double-flattened steering wheel, and new displays and design elements RS 3 Sportback (£59,510) and RS 3 Saloon (£60,510) on sale in September UK line-up comprises RS 3, RS 3 Carbon Black, and RS 3 Carbon Vorsprung For additional information please visit https://press.audi.co.uk/en-gb/ Ingolstadt, August 20, 2024 – Audi Sport has heightened the senses of the RS 3. This is visible at first glance: The strong lines at the front, the motorsport-inspired wheels, and the RS front sport seats visually enhance its character. This is accompanied by the deep-throated roar of the five-cylinder engine with its signature firing sequence. The 2.5 TFSI, combined with the optimized chassis setup and new tyres, gives the RS 3 even more appetite for corners. You can feel the difference also on the inside, thanks to the new steering wheel and the high-end materials. The Audi RS 3 – an experience for the senses. Expressive design evokes the performance The RS 3’s product upgrade brings with it a significantly sportier appearance. The dominant feature of the assertive front design is the hexagonal Singleframe with a striking border. Flatter and considerably broader than before, it emphasizes the dynamics of the compact sports car with its rhombus-pattern grille. The same goes for the two functional side air intakes – accentuated by vertical black blades – and the three apertures above the front splitter, which now spans the entire vehicle breadth and lets the RS 3 sit even lower – reminiscent of the Audi Sport quattro S1 Pikes Peak from 1987. With redesigned daytime running lights, the headlights also accentuate the car’s performance. The digital signature, which displays a checkered flag in the RS 3, comprises 24 elements. Furthermore, in combination with the matrix LED headlights (standard on Carbon Black and Carbon Vorsprung), drivers can choose between three additional daytime running light designs in the MMI touch display for the first time. The rear of the RS 3 also features references to motorsport and has a much stronger presence than before. Vertical side reflectors continue the design theme of the air intakes at the front. The large functional RS-specific diffuser incorporates a red reflector in its centre and, on its sides, the two oval tailpipe trims of the RS exhaust system, which look even larger in their black frames. Like the headlights, the taillights also feature a new graphic: Arrows that dynamically light up from inside to out with the coming home/ leaving home function embody the progressive taillight design. The expressive exterior is accentuated by the RS-specific exterior colours Kyalami Green and Kemora Grey, the new metallic paints Ascari Blue and Progressive Red, and, for the first time, Daytona Grey in a matt finish. On all UK models, the Singleframe and diffuser have a gloss black finish. Continuing this theme, the RS 3 comes with matt-black 19-inch aluminium cast wheels in a 5-Y-spoke design as standard. On Carbon Black and Carbon Vorsprung models, the rims are a motorsport-inspired design, with 10 striking cross spokes, either in matt dark grey or in glossy metallic black in bi-colour design. Even more individuality is offered by the carbon and high-gloss black detailing on Carbon Black and Carbon Vorsprung models, which adorn the front air intakes, the side skirts, and the blade above the diffuser. Dark interior with double-flattened steering wheel and front sport seatsIn the interior, too, which is dominated by dark colour tones, everything is geared for performance, with the new steering wheel, RS sport seats, and sporty displays. Flattened above and below, the perforated leather steering wheel has a substantially sportier look. Meanwhile, the RS sport seats give even better support. The seat centre panel with RS honeycomb stitching is made of Fine Nappa leather, with Dinamica microfibre accents and contrasting stitching in black, express red or micrommata green. New light features, effect paint, and carbon The standard contour and ambient lighting illuminate the new design features: the storage box in front of the flatter-designed shifter, the centre console with cup holders, and the doors. A delightful night-time feature is the so-called planar lighting, whereby a light source in the door panel back-lights hundreds of lasered rhombus shapes of various sizes, which dynamically light up when locking and unlocking the RS 3. This underscores the sporty-evocative design. The door handles, air vents as well as the cover clip of the steering wheel and the shift paddles are finished in a vanadium look, which shimmers according to the light conditions. RS displays with focus on performanceThe 12.3-inch Audi virtual cockpit plus with Sport, Performance, and Runway views was already standard. In Runway mode, speed is visualized in reverse order, with the highest revs in the foreground and idling speed in the background. These features are now joined by the new rev counter, which prominently displays the revolutions per minute in the centre of the instrument cluster. In addition, there are displays for power output, torque, g-forces, acceleration, and lap times. In manual transmission mode, the RS-specific blinking shift indicator changes the rpm display from green to yellow to red, motorsports-style, to indicate the ideal time to change gears. On top of this, the temperature ranges of coolant, torque splitter, brakes, engine oil and transmission oil are shown in colour on the 10.1-inch touch display in the instrument panel. Furthermore, the RS 3 now features an app store with many applications that can be used directly on the vehicle display. The selected contents are installed on the RS 3 infotainment system – independently of the smartphone. Five-cylinder engine with more distinctive sound The Audi RS 3 is powered…

Exclusive small series: The Mercedes-AMG GT3 Edition 130Y Motorsport

World premiere of the limited GT3 version at the Pebble Beach Automotive Week Highly exclusive edition also the last AMG GT3 variant with a naturally aspirated engine Traditional design elements, optimised aerodynamics, exceptional features Affalterbach. This year, Mercedes-AMG is celebrating 130 Years of Motorsport under the sign of the three-pointed star. The chronological reference for the motor racing anniversary is the first automotive competition, which led from Paris to Rouen on 22 July 1894 and ended with a victory for the Daimler licensed engine. To mark this historic milestone, the limited Mercedes-AMG GT3 Edition 130Y Motorsport celebrates its world premiere under the motto “Racing Legend Remastered” at the Automotive Week in Pebble Beach (California, USA). The highly exclusive edition of the GT3 car unites two iconic eras of motorsport. State-of-the-art motorsport technology meets traditional design features of the legendary racing cars of the 1950s. With 680 hp, the non-homologated special model is the most powerful GT3 vehicle ever built in Affalterbach. It is also the last Mercedes-AMG GT3 version to be powered by a naturally aspirated engine. The exclusive edition is being offered worldwide as a collector’s item in a limited edition of just 13 vehicles. Performance: Aero update and Drag Reduction SystemUnlike the base model, the Mercedes-AMG GT3 Edition 130Y Motorsport is not subject to the limits of homologation. For this reason, the legendary AMG 6.3-litre V8 naturally aspirated engine has been further optimised. Without air restrictor and with a special exhaust system, it develops a peak output of 680 hp (500 kW). The aerodynamic components have also undergone extensive development and increase downforce by 15 per cent compared to the GT3 base model. To achieve this, the front splitter and the air outlets (louvres) in the front wings were redesigned. Changes to the side skirts, the underfloor and the rear diffuser also increase downforce. The wider rear wing also helps to optimise the aero balance. The Drag Reduction System (DRS), inspired by Formula 1® and Class 1 DTM, is a new and central feature. At the touch of a button on the steering wheel, the main element of the rear wing moves into a flat position and drag is reduced. To maintain the aero balance, active elements on the front floor are extended at the same time. Thanks to this technology, top speeds of over 315 kilometres per hour are possible despite the essentially high downforce level. During lateral acceleration or deceleration, the active elements immediately return to their original downforce position. The exclusive high-performance braking system is also inspired by Formula 1®. In contrast to the steel discs compulsory in the GT3 regulations, the brake discs in the special model are made of carbon. They also play their part in making the edition model significantly lighter than the homologated GT3 version. Power is transmitted via a sequential six-speed racing transmission with modified gear ratios. As with all Mercedes-AMG racing cars, the transaxle transmission is mounted on the rear axle and connected to the engine in a torsionally rigid and torque resistant manner by a carbon fibre torque tube. The suspension features fully adjustable 4-way motorsport shock absorbers. The collector’s item offers all proven safety attributes of the Mercedes-AMG GT3 – a carbon fibre safety cell connected to the chassis, a five-point harness, safety nets, a steel roll cage, a fire extinguishing system, a safety tank and an emergency hatch. The extensive equipment also includes an effective racing ABS and a multi-adjustable traction control system. Track record: Mercedes-AMG special model sets fastest time on Mount Panorama Circuit in AustraliaAfter two years of development and intensive testing, Mercedes-AMG Performance Driver Jules Gounon (AND) demonstrated the outstanding performance of the vehicle for the first time on 17 February 2024 at the Mount Panorama Circuit in Australia. In a prototype of the Mercedes-AMG GT3 Edition 130Y Motorsport, he beat the track record for GT cars on the iconic 6.213-kilometre circuit by 2.074 seconds in a time of 1m 56.605s. Looks: Interplay of state-of-the-art motorsport technologies with traditional design featuresThe Mercedes-Benz 300 SL W 194 racing sports car from 1952 served as the design inspiration for the limited-edition anniversary model, with classic stylistic elements from the brand’s first closed top racing car characterising the exterior appearance of the Mercedes-AMG GT3 Edition 130Y Motorsport. The special paint finish in an exclusive silver colour is reminiscent of the legendary Silver Arrows. Blue rhombuses on the front wings and the coloured frame of the radiator grille are a reference to historically successful cars. The winning cars driven in 1952 by Hans Klenk and Karl Kling in the Carrera Panamericana and by Hermann Lang and Fritz Riess (all GER) in the 24 Hours of Le Mans carried similar design elements. Weight-optimised 18-inch magnesium rims and the extensive implementation of carbon elements build a bridge to the racing sports cars of the modern era alongside a striking AMG crest on the roof. The close link between tradition and modernity is also evident in the interior. Advanced motorsport technologies such as the Bosch DDU 10 cockpit display with enlarged screen and high-resolution graphics support vehicle operation. Visually, the interior is inspired by the Mercedes-Benz SLR 300 models from 1955, which achieved worldwide fame with Juan Manuel Fangio (ARG) at the wheel. This reminiscence is visible in the seat upholstery in blue chequered fabric as well as the headrest upholstery and door loops in brown leather. Another highlight is the specially developed steering wheel with anodised buttons and walnut wood handles. In addition, each of the limited edition special models bears an edition badge attached to the centre console. Exclusivity: Extensive overall package with race gear and vehicle coverEach of the 13 Mercedes-AMG GT3 Edition 130Y Motorsport comes with a comprehensive delivery package. In addition to a vehicle cover specially developed for the special model, this includes a complete racing equipment for the driver. The race kit was co-designed by Mercedes-AMG Official Partner PUMA and its design is based on the stylistic features of the vehicle’s exterior. It…

Luxury automotive wall art business celebrates 400ᵗʰ customer

NOTTINGHAM – AUGUST 19th, 2024 – Limited100.co.uk, the East Midlands-based luxury car prints business, is an online-only direct-to-consumer store that’s been a hit with petrolheads around the world, from the UK to USA, Thailand to Australia and beyond. Powered by Shopify, the automotive home décor business was founded by car enthusiast and marketing professional Simon Wright, in 2020. Simon added: “I started Limited100 because after moving into my first home I was searching online for some artwork of a Lamborghini Miura, which I regard as the most beautiful car of all time. I couldn’t find anything of super high-quality that was handmade, so I decided to create a company of my own that celebrates the handbuilt artisanship that Britain is so synonymous with. “At the business’s conception, I began working with a carefully curated group of award-winning photographers and to ensure exclusivity, each print we produce is limited to 100 units ever (hence our name). The edition number is picked at random for each order, unless a customer reaches out for something specific. For example, edition 8/100 is popular with our Japanese customers, and we recently had an order for someone’s 50th birthday, so as a thank you for their custom we gave them edition 50/100. Proudly Made in Britain“In 2020 I applied for Made in Britain status, and eligibility requirements included manufacturing and assembling a physical product in the UK, and that 80% of our value chain is in the UK. Because our printing and framing are completed in Nottingham from UK-sourced materials, our application was approved and we now display the Made in Britain logo on our website, the backs of our frames, and certificates of authenticity.” “Our automotive prints are available in a range of sizes, from A3 all the way up to 5 metres wide. Formats include print-only, framed, canvas, aluminium composite and acrylic glass. Fully bespoke, we can print any format our customers request. Celebrating our 400th customer“Limited100’s client base is diverse, ranging from interior designers, to homeware gift buyers, supercar dealerships, mancave garage projects, and even James Bond enthusiasts. Our 400th customer was an employee from Portugal, buying one of our Ferrari F40 prints for their CEO’s 40th birthday.” About Limited100Love cars? Light commercial vehicles tread heavy on the environment – we can’t wait until 2030, warns fleet electrification experts

Alarming research from McKinsey & Company (McKinsey) reveals that light commercial vehicles (LCVs) account for 40 per cent of all logistics-related emissions, which is eight times higher than the five per cent attributed to air freight. Fleet electrification experts at BEDEO urge both industry and government to seriously consider electric retrofitting as a solution to reduce the LCV sector’s emissions immediately, rather than waiting until 2035 and beyond. BEDEO urges government action to address the heavy environmental impact of LCVs, which are proven to be the single largest polluters in the logistics industry LCVs contribute 40 per cent of the logistic sector’s pollution, according to a recent report from McKinsey & Company, with BEDEO advocating for rapid adoption of electric retrofitting to reduce emissions With diesel LCV sales rising and slow EV progress, BEDEO emphasises retrofitting is crucial to meeting the UK’s net-zero goals now, not in 2035 and beyond To minimise or reduce tailpipe emissions from ageing large van fleets, BEDEO calls on the government to support retrofitting as a key part of the low-emission transition, offering a faster, cost-effective solution to transition existing diesel vans to electric BEDEO’s Reborn Electric programme offers hybrid and full electric retrofit conversions for large vans, reducing emissions with minimal operational disruption BEDEO’s whitepaper, titled ‘Accelerating the Transition, Supporting our Businesses: Enabling Low-Emission Fleets with Retrofit Electrification’, highlights the urgent need for retrofitting incentives to speed up fleet electrification, and is available to download here Farnham, 19 August 2024: A recent McKinsey & Company (McKinsey) report on pollution highlights that light commercial vehicles (LCVs) are the largest single contributor within the logistics industry (40 per cent). BEDEO, a pioneering leader in the electric mobility sector, urges governments and policymakers to take immediate action and acknowledge the power of electric retrofitting for large vans. Failure to do so could mean missing a critical opportunity to significantly reduce emissions while promoting a circular economy, warns the UK-based fleet electrification experts. The McKinsey report* is live at a time when UK-based battery electric LCV (eLCV) registrations are declining and diesel-powered LCV sales are rising. Data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) show that just 5.1 per cent (10,260) of all new LCVs (<3.5t and Rigids between 3.5 – 4.25t) registered this year are battery electric, which has reduced from 5.6 per cent (11,016) market share in 2023. In contrast, Diesel <3.5t sales this year are still on the up, reaching 187,223. New registrations in July 2024 – over 5,000 more than last year (2023)**. BEDEO believes that high upfront costs, limited availability, and perceived reductions in load space are significant barriers to buying brand-new eLCVs. However, BEDEO’s innovative ‘third way’ – retrofitting an electric powertrain through its Reborn Electric programme – provides a cost-effective alternative to purchasing a brand-new eLCV, offering electrification at a significantly lower price while preserving load space and reducing the overall CO2 emissions produced by LCVs. McKinsey’s report, released earlier this summer, emphasises the urgent need for fleet owners, OEMs, and policymakers to take stronger action in reducing LCV-related tailpipe emissions. BEDEO urges large van fleets and regulators to recognise the potential of electric retrofitting, particularly with its Stellantis-approved Reborn Electric system, which adds an electric powertrain to ageing diesel vans, giving them a new lease of life. This method is the subject of BEDEO’s whitepaper, titled ‘Accelerating the Transition, Supporting our Businesses: Enabling Low-Emission Fleets with Retrofit Electrification’, which underscores the critical need for introducing incentives for those looking to retrofit, and for retrofitters to be tighter regulated and scrutinised on safety and quality standards. Osman Boyner, Founder and CEO of BEDEO said: “No longer can we hide from the facts – LCVs are the single biggest polluters in the logistics industry. Our reliance on them isn’t going to reduce, and for good reason – LCVs are the backbone of the logistics industry – however, we need to rethink the way we power them [mainly with fossil fuels] and offer cost-effective electric versions now, and not just wait until they’re banned – that could be in 2030, 2035 or even beyond that. “Our solution is to offer retrofitting. Retrofitting electric powertrains is a pragmatic solution to achieve a faster LCV transition to net zero. The ‘TCO2’ approach, as we have coined it, combines total cost of ownership and CO2 considerations, offering a sustainable and economically viable path forward for large van fleets across the country. We have worked tirelessly to ensure that our retrofit solution ensures a lower TCO compared to investing in entirely new [large van / LCV] fleets, with operators able to realise savings on fuel and maintenance while also allowing for operational continuity – retrofitting can be accomplished with minimal downtime, ensuring that fleet operations remain uninterrupted. “The UK van industry truly is at a pivotal moment. Without swift action and the adoption of innovative solutions like our in-wheel motor technology, we risk falling short of our impending net-zero goals,” Osman continues. “We urge the Government to recognise and support these alternative electrification pathways, which not only make economic sense – for both the country and fleet managers everywhere – but are crucial for achieving our environmental commitments.” Supporting this is a BEDEO whitepaper, titled ‘Accelerating the Transition, Supporting our Businesses: Enabling Low-Emission Fleets with Retrofit Electrification’, which underscores the critical need for introducing incentives for those looking to retrofit, and for retrofitters to be tighter regulated and scrutinised on safety and quality standards. By embracing retrofit solutions, the UK can mitigate the environmental impact of diesel vans and passenger cars, improve air quality, and accelerate progress towards a greener, more sustainable future. BEDEO has submitted this whitepaper and other evidence for the government’s Registering historic, classic, rebuilt vehicles and vehicles converted to electric: call for evidence*** as officials review policies and processes relating to DVLA registrations for conversions. The new Mercedes-Maybach SL Monogram Series, for the ultimate open-air experience

Two curated design concepts “Red Ambience” and “White Ambience” at market launch Chrome fin and upright star on the bonnet as well as aerodynamic scoop behind the seats redefine proportions Maybach pattern forms a stylish design element linking exterior and interior The highest level of driving and acoustic comfort Stuttgart/Pebble Beach. The Mercedes‑Maybach SL 680 Monogram Series (provisional figures, combined energy consumption: 13.7 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 312 g/km; CO2 class: G)[1] is the sportiest model in the Maybach brand’s history. Also new is the uniquely cohesive combination of colours and materials for the exterior and interior, with the Maybach pattern as a linking design element. These special accents appear throughout, from front to rear, inside and out. There will be two curated design concepts for the open-top two-seater at market launch: The Mercedes‑Maybach SL 680 Monogram Series Red Ambience is characterised by a new two-tone paint finish of obsidian black metallic over MANUFAKTUR garnet red metallic. In the Mercedes‑Maybach SL 680 Monogram Series White Ambience, obsidian black metallic contrasts with MANUFAKTUR opalite white magno. The exceptionally brilliant red and the elegant white both embody sensuality, beauty and lightness. They perfectly express the philosophy and driving experience of the new model. Other exterior colours are possible upon specific customer request. The interior features sustainably tanned, crystal white MANUFAKTUR Exclusive nappa leather and trim parts in gleaming silver chrome. The distinctive bonnet bears an upright Mercedes star and a chromed fin running front to rear along its centre. To further enhance the exclusivity, the obsidian black bonnet is available upon request with the Maybach pattern incorporated in graphite grey uni. This process is very complex and is partly done by hand. First, the bonnet receives a base coat, which is then sanded by hand. The Maybach pattern is then printed onto it. Each part of the process is technically sophisticated and must be executed with the utmost precision. Next, the bonnet is coated with clear matte lacquer, sanded by hand and finally finished with a further coat of clear matte lacquer. The inside of the headlights is finished with high-quality accenting in rose gold. The dedicated front skirt emphasises the vehicle’s width with horizontal air intakes. The windscreen frame is finished in gleaming chrome. A further chrome insert graces the sill cladding. The Mercedes‑Maybach SL runs on 21-inch forged wheels in 5-hole design or multi-spoke design. The extensively insulated acoustic soft top consists of light black fabric, with the Maybach pattern subtly incorporated in anthracite. The rear is characterised by rear lights with the Maybach signet, a brand-specific rear skirt with chrome trim, a dedicated diffuser design and tailpipe trims with a signature horizontal bar. Behind the seats, an aerodynamically designed double scoop reinforces the individual look. Together with the chrome fin on the bonnet, it gives the two-seater particularly elegant and sporty proportions when viewed from the side, especially with the top down. Interior features Maybach-specific equipment and radiant, crystal white leatherInside, sustainably tanned, crystal white nappa leather creates an exceptionally exquisite ambience. It features on the door panels, the centre console and on the brand’s signature comfort seats. The seat upholstery has a new floral design.
