GEM Motoring Assist has released a new video guide on making 999 calls from the roadside. This is part of their expanded collection of Blue Light Aware road safety resources.

The Process of Making a 999 Call

GEM’s road safety adviser, James Luckhurst, stated, “Road incidents can be overwhelming. Providing accurate information to emergency operators helps expedite assistance. In critical situations, your input could save lives.”

“Our brief video outlines key details you need to provide such as incident location, number of vehicles involved, casualty details, and if anyone is trapped.”

Aiding Emergency Motorcycles

Another new video offers guidance on assisting emergency motorcycles in urgent scenarios. Sgt Dave Bottomley from the Metropolitan Police’s motorcycle safety team explained that these bikes are advantageous in heavy traffic where other vehicles may struggle.

“When an emergency motorcycle approaches, slow down and follow its cues without endangering yourself or breaking traffic laws,” he advised.

The video was created with support from the Metropolitan Police and DocBike.

Tips for Horse Riders
The third new release provides horse riders with advice when encountering emergency vehicles. Produced alongside the British Horse Society (BHS), it emphasizes visibility and preparedness.
Alan Hiscox from BHS noted that high-visibility gear helps drivers spot horses early but cautioned about winding lanes where sirens might not be turned off in time.

Filming included collaboration with Surrey Fire and Rescue along with the Metropolitan Police.
