21st June 2024 – Despite a dip in retail registrations, consumer interest in new cars remains strong. Auto Trader has reported a 28.5% year-on-year (YoY) increase in visits to its new car platform this June, marking the highest YoY growth seen over two years.
This surge is driven by an expanded selection and better affordability as brands adapt to regulatory targets, increased competition, and higher production levels amidst slowing retail sales. The number of new cars listed on Auto Trader grew significantly recently—up by 8% from April to May—and rose over 21% since January within just the first two weeks of June alone.
While base RRPs are rising, buyers benefit from overall price reductions with more than half (53%) of all models seeing gradual price drops over the past year. Average discounts have increased from 6.4% last year to 8.8%, with nearly eight out of ten new cars offering some discount and seven out of ten featuring finance offers.
