Located in one of the UK’s leading regions for scientific and technological innovation, Bicester Motion presents a central location for business and product development, reinforced by robust static- and live-drive environments for showcasing and testing TUAL’s ground-breaking technology. Philip Clarke, CEO and Founder of TUAL: “Bicester Motion provides TUAL with an industry-leading launchpad for accelerating the development of our unique, cutting-edge electric commercial-vehicle charging solutions. From world-class engineering expertise, to a host of on-site specialist partners, proximity to the Advanced Propulsion Centre team, and its inspiring entrepreneurial culture, Bicester Motion is a natural location for us to propel our business forward. “The industry needs to seize the opportunity to electrify commercial vehicles. We intend to scale our commercial operations at Bicester, in parallel with the expansion of technical operations in Scotland, to help businesses make a success of the electric commercial-vehicle transition – now and in the future.” Daniel Geoghegan, chief executive, Bicester Motion added: “We warmly welcome TUAL to our thriving future mobility community. Their innovative technology has the capability of transforming commercial vehicle EV infrastructure. We look forward to seeing their growth continue to accelerate in their new home.” There is an urgent need for enterprise fleets and OEMs to adopt eLCVs, with lucrative fleet contracts demanding the integration of zero-emission vans and regulatory pressures requiring vehicle-manufacturers to deliver them. Fleet-operator needs are currently not served by eLCV offerings on the market, with driving-range and vehicle-charging challenges creating a significant cost-burden on businesses. With 40% of van use-cases exceeding real-world eLCV range, and 70% of van drivers unable to charge at home or depot, lost productivity from charging downtime can cost fleets up to £150,000 per driver or vehicle over a five-year period. Developed from the ground-up for maximum flexibility, TUAL’s highly modular powerbank solutions have been optimised to help enterprise fleets overcome grid and vehicle constraints. The only on-demand battery system that’s scalable across OEMs, TUAL powerbanks are fully compatible with vehicle manufacturers’ existing platforms – with seamless installation facilitated by integration kits offered with each solution. Further information on TUAL and its portfolio of ground-breaking solutions can be found on the business’ website here. About TUALTUAL is an innovator in electric commercial-vehicle charging solutions, working with enterprise customers across Europe to deliver technology that transforms their productivity, profitability and utilisation. 1000 Miglia 2024, no one like Vesco and Salvinelli ever before

Saturday 15 June – The 2200-kilometre tour de force of the 1000 Miglia 2024 has ended. The 421 competing crews, with their vintage jewels built between 1927 and 1957, travelled the classic route from Brescia to Rome and back in an anti-clockwise direction, just as the heroes of the first editions of the 1000 Miglia did. The leg finishes were Turin (for the first time in its history), Viareggio, Rome and San Lazzaro di Savena, before returning to Brescia with the final parade from the Viale Venezia platform. Andrea Vesco and Fabio Salvinelli have accomplished a feat that has never been achieved before in the history of the Most Beautiful Race In The World, becoming champions for the fourth consecutive time in their 1929 Alfa Romeo 6c 1750 Ss Spider Zagato: a record that will be difficult to equal in the future. For Vesco, it is actually his fifth victory in a row (out of seven in total), having also triumphed in 2020 in tandem with his father. “We are happy, how could we not be! – the immediate comment of Andrea Vesco – we prepare to do great things and we are happy because this year we were in front from the first trial and we always kept the lead. We did very well and now we will enjoy this victory”. If the reigning champions were cannibals right from the first block of trials at the Brescia Castle, there was a battle behind them: in the end Gianmario Fontanella and Anna Maria Covelli took a well-deserved second place with their 1927 Lancia Lambda Casaro VII Serie, followed by Alberto Aliverti and Stefano Valente, also competing with a 1929 6C. Winning the Ferrari Tribute were Frank Binder and Giordano Mozzi in a 296 GTS, second were Celestino and Antonio Sangiovanni in an 812 GTS. Completing the podium were Gianluigi and Federico Smussi in a 1996 F355 GTS. Mirco Magni and Alessandro Ferruta took first place in the 1000 Miglia Green with a Polestar 2, while the 1000 Miglia Experience went to Ismaele and Marco Luigi Ghilardelli in a Mercedes Amg Gt C. Osprey Charging acquires land to establish its largest EV charging hub in Scotland, installing 16 ultra-rapid chargers in Paisley, Glasgow

Osprey Charging has purchased its second freehold site – which will become Osprey’s largest charging location in Scotland. Planning approval to construct a 300kW ultra-rapid charging hub has already been obtained and construction work is expected to start in the summer with the site expected to open to the public at the start of 2025. The 16-charger hub will be located opposite the Phoenix Retail Park on the A737 and just minutes from the M8 and Glasgow Airport. This purchase marks another step in Osprey’s mission to deliver high-quality, reliable and easy-to-use public EV charging right across the UK, and will be followed by further acquisition announcements in the coming weeks. Osprey Charging has already installed over 200 rapid and ultra-rapid chargepoints in 2024, and are now one of the UK’s largest and fastest-growing networks High-res images: https://bit.ly/Osprey_Paisley London, Monday 17th June 2024: Osprey Charging, the UK’s leading and fastest-growing EV rapid charging network, has announced plans for a new ultra-fast 16-charger hub in Paisley – which when completed will be the largest public ultra-rapid charging hub in Scotland. The charge point operator has completed the purchase of a freehold site in Paisley, and planning permission has been granted to install 16 300kW public charge points. Located by the Phoenix Retail Park in Paisley, the 16-charger hub will be situated just off the A737, a short drive from the M8, Scotland’s busiest motorway. On a key route for Scotland’s drivers, the new Paisley super-hub will provide rapid, reliable and high-quality EV charging in a strategic location. The Paisley hub will mark the second occasion of Osprey Charging completing the purchase of a freehold site, following the award-winning Salmon’s Leap hub in Devon, which opened last year. Owning the land where the site will be constructed offers significantly enhanced flexibility for its design, ensuring it aligns seamlessly with Osprey’s long-held values of simple, convenient, safe, accessible for all charging. Osprey expects to announce further site acquisitions throughout the summer. The Paisley hub is ideally situated, with numerous amenities close by that drivers can make use of while recharging their EVs. Located adjacent to the Showcase Cinema and just north of the McDonald’s drive-thru, numerous on-site shops will provide plenty of on-site activity for drivers. Ian Johnston, CEO of Osprey Charging, said:“We’re hugely excited to have completed the purchase of the land for our forthcoming 16-charger ultra-rapid hub in Paisley, which marks our second freehold site in the UK. The purchase of freehold sites is an important strategy for Osprey, as it enables us to build larger public charging locations with greater flexibility over their design. This hub will be crucial in supporting the uptake of EVs in Scotland as well as in meeting growing demand for reliable, accessible and high-quality EV charging across the UK. “In 2024, we have successfully delivered nine high-powered hubs across various UK locations, and the new Paisley hub opposite the Phoenix Retail Park will be another significant milestone in our rapidly expanding network. As the year progresses, our goal is to complete 30 hubs, which will be a monumental stride not only in the advancement of our network but also in fortifying the broader public EV charging infrastructure.” Osprey Charging’s network of public EV chargers continues to grow at a rapid rate, and now encompasses over 1,000 rapid and ultra-rapid chargers in key urban and rural locations across the UK. Osprey chargers have a reliability rate of 99%, while its straightforward charging experience has seen Osprey recognised as a ‘Driver Recommended Network’ by Zap Map for a fourth time.

New Volkswagen Passat named Britain’s best tow car by What Car?

Volkswagen Passat declared Tow Car Awards champion by expert judges from What Car? and the Camping and Caravanning Club The best tow cars in four weight categories also named, along with the best electric car for towing and the best used tow car Kia and Volkswagen win two awards each, with BMW, Ford and Nissan also earning category victories The What Car? Tow Car Awards 2024 is the latest event in a 18-year collaboration between What Car? and the Camping and Caravanning Club Find out more about the winners at: www.whatcar.com/awards/tow-car-awards The Volkswagen Passat has been named the best car for towing for a record fourth time at the annual What Car? Tow Car Awards, held in partnership with the Camping and Caravanning Club and supported by Adria Caravans. Britain’s leading consumer champion and new car deals platform, What Car?, and the towing experts at the Camping and Caravanning Club gave the Passat the overall win due to its huge breadth of abilities. What Car? editor Steve Huntingford explained: “The new Passat shows that you don’t need a CEO’s salary to buy a brilliant, modern tow car. Despite being relatively light, it pulls with the assurance and stability of a heavyweight. What’s more, it has powerful brakes, remains unflappable during a sudden lane change, and is as comfortable as it is practical.” The Camping and Caravanning Club’s Huw Hopkins, a tester judge on the programme, added: “Whenever the Passat has won the overall title in the past, we’ve always recommended a diesel. But while the new car isn’t available with diesel power, the abilities of the 1.5-litre mild-hybrid petrol meant we didn’t miss it. This engine is both smooth and quiet, it copes easily with a sensibly matched caravan, and fuel economy is distinctly diesel-like.” What Car? and the Camping and Caravanning Club have been collaborating on the Tow Car Awards since 2007, with the Passat previously taking the top prize in 2007, 2011 and 2015. Before deciding on the overall winner in 2024, the judges handed out awards to cars in four different towing weight classes, ranging from up to 1549kg, to 2000kg+. In addition, the Kia EV9 was named best electric car for towing and the Kia Sorento best used tow car. To decide the winners, testing was undertaken by matching eligible cars to caravans weighted to 85% of the car’s kerb weight (the maximum the Camping and Caravanning Club recommends) or its legal towing limit, depending on which was lower. They were then ballasted to simulate driving with passengers and luggage. One of What Car?’s expert road testers was responsible for the most highly-skilled manoeuvres, designed to show which cars will stay under control in an emergency. Meanwhile, drivers from the Camping and Caravanning Club assessed high-speed stability, carried out a hill start on a 1-in-6 slope, looked for towing-friendly features – such as a trailer stability system – and confirmed whether the puncture repair provision was suitable for use while towing. What Car?’s road test ratings were then used to assess how the cars perform when not towing. And the latest What Car? depreciation data and Reliability Survey information was also factored into the decisions. Key brands that supported the testing in 2024 include caravan manufacturer Adria, plus Al-Ko, Milenco and Witter. Volvo XC90 honoured as the UK’s best seven-seater in the Auto Trader New Car Awards 2024

Volvo’s large SUV combines contemporary style with supreme practicality Seven seats as standard on all XC90 versions The Volvo XC90 has triumphed in the Auto Trader New Car Awards 2024, winning the title of the UK’s best seven-seater. Its success was secured thanks to the positive opinions and experiences of owners who were among more than 200,000 UK motorists who took part in Auto Trader’s latest annual survey, rating their cars across different criteria, from reliability and performance to appearance and running costs. Announced at an awards ceremony in London yesterday, the honour commends the XC90 for its impressive balance of style and practicality. While it displays the cool, contemporary design cues that distinguish today’s Volvo models, it offers a generous combination of passenger and load space. The load compartment in the petrol version offers up to 356 litres of space when all seven seats are being used, or a maximum of 1,856 litres with all the seats folded down. For families on the move, the XC90 provides many useful features for making journeys easier and more comfortable. Standard equipment across the range includes individual folding second- and third-row seats, four-zone climate control with an advanced air-quality system, air-conditioning for the third-row seats, hands-free tailgate operation, a rear parking camera, front and rear parking sensors, and a comprehensive suite of safety and driver-assistance systems. Erin Baker, Auto Trader Editorial Director, said: “Volvo’s stylish, beautifully built XC90 offers everything you could ever need from a seven-seat car.” She highlighted the positive opinions expressed by owners and their appreciation of the XC90’s family-friendly features, interior space, ability to take long journeys in its stride and generous equipment levels. Nicole Melillo Shaw, Volvo Car UK Managing Director, said: “It is fantastic to win this Auto Trader award, not least because it is voted for by owners who live with the car day in, day out. “In all the advances we have made in design, engineering, safety and new technologies, we have never forgotten the importance of day-to-day practicality – a hallmark of our brand over many years. Customers clearly value the fact that the XC90 is an authentic, premium-quality seven-seater without compromise.” The XC90’s success comes just a week after the first of Volvo’s fully electric EX90 seven-seaters came off the assembly line in the USA. News in brief – latest technology upgrades for Swace

Following on from its powertrain and equipment upgrades last year, the Swace Full Hybrid model has recently received some upgrades for mid-2024 offering an even higher level of technology as standard. Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) is now included for both Motion and Ultra grades. Combined with Adaptive Cruise Control, ISA is designed to help drivers keep to legal speed limits. ISA will audibly inform the driver to change the vehicle speed when the road speed limit changes as recognised by the Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR) system. Moving up to Ultra now adds navigation as standard and even easier to read information from a new colour LCD meter display that has increased in diameter from seven to 12.3-inches. The central touchscreen display audio unit is also of new design and has increased in size from eight to 10.5-inches in diameter. With it’s full hybrid drivetrain, Swace complements the rest of the Suzuki passenger car line-up which offers hybrid as standard. It means Suzuki customers never pay extra for the fuel saving and low CO2 emissions benefits of hybrid. With Swace, the benefit is fuel economy of up to 62.7mpg and CO2 emissions of just 102g/km. Up to Seven Years Warranty.Low cost of ownership is also bolstered for all Suzuki customers with the inclusion of up to seven years warranty. This is offered free of charge once the car reaches the end of its standard manufacturer warranty period and is then booked in for its next scheduled service within the Suzuki Dealer network. Since launch last year, over 26,000 customers have registered their cars to enjoy this benefit. This warranty stays in place until the next qualifying service and is then simply renewed again up to a maximum vehicle age of 7 years / 100,000 miles – whichever comes first. Major components are covered, and should a customer decide to sell their car between services and within the seven-year qualifying period, the warranty can simply be transferred to the next owner – again free of charge.

Times are changing – preservation beats restoration at world-class concours

For the very first time, a ‘preserved’ car has won Best of Show at a world-class concours event – a moment of huge significance for the historic vehicle movement. At last month’s Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este 2024, the coveted Trofeo BMW Group – overall award for Best of Show – went to the 1932 Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 by Figoni, owned by 27-year-old Belgian collector Thibault De Meester. “The huge significance of this moment is that a car which has been largely preserved, rather than restored, took the highest accolade,” says Tiddo Bresters, President of FIVA (the Fédération Internationale des Véhicules Anciens or international federation of historic vehicles). “It clearly highlights the trend towards preservation over restoration, a shift that FIVA has long championed. We are proud to say that FIVA has been a frontrunner in the battle for preservation and authenticity, having launched our FIVA ‘Best Preserved Vehicle’ award at Pebble Beach in 1999. Nor is the Villa d’Este result a one-off. In 2023, a Duesenberg SJ that was last restored more than 20 years ago won Best of Show at Villa d’Este, and now this perfectly preserved 1932 Alfa Romeo has confirmed that attitudes have changed.” Bresters concludes: “Looking ‘brand new’ isn’t the point – the importance of a car is in its history; its authenticity; its place in our automotive heritage. It’s extremely encouraging to see this appreciation of a well-preserved car spreading through the highest echelons of the historic vehicle world, as well as through the bedrock of the classics owned, maintained and enjoyed by the millions of enthusiasts we represent around the globe.” FIVA now looks forward with great interest to Pebble Beach 2024. Whether or not a ‘preserved’ vehicle takes the top prize there in August, FIVA – in partnership with the Hagerty Drivers Foundation – will again be presenting trophies during Monterey Week, at both The Quail Motorsports Gathering and Pebble Beach, awards that have been renamed ‘in honour of Dr Frederick Simeone’, the preservation award judge and automotive historian who passed away in 2022. Notes to Editors: FIVA (the Fédération Internationale des Véhicules Anciens) is the worldwide organisation dedicated to the protection, preservation and promotion of historic vehicles and related culture, as well as their safe use.
