McLaren CEO calls for UK to be a supercar ‘centre-of-excellence’ for next-generation battery technology

The UK, with its rich history in high-performance automotive manufacturing and elite motorsport, faces a golden opportunity to lead the electrification of supercar production if it can attract investment into the domestic supply-chain, says McLaren Automotive CEO, Michael Leiters. Mr Leiters says the existing UK supply-chain is currently not equipped to meet the unique performance requirements of electric supercars and calls on any future UK Government to provide a strategic roadmap for investment in future powertrain technologies. “A clear industrial strategy, led by investment in the domestic supply-chain, will deliver growth, support jobs, help decarbonise the economy and secure a vibrant future for the UK performance car industry,” says Mr Leiters. “It’s time we regained confidence in our sector by investing in a world-class domestic supply-chain to support the development of tomorrow’s high-performance vehicles,” he says. “The UK was once the world’s largest vehicle exporter. Today it remains home to some of the world’s most admired performance car brands, as well as the majority of Formula 1 racing teams,” says Mr Leiters. “We must harness the skills, knowledge and ingenuity of the UK motorsport and performance car industry to create a global, high-performance centre of excellence,” he says. “UK-based luxury and sports car brands command tremendous pricing power thanks to their rich histories, intrinsic brand value and class-leading performance attributes. “As a result, the productivity gross value added of McLaren employees is 51% higher than that of the UK automotive manufacturing sector as a whole. “With more than 90% of McLaren supercars being exported, the UK performance car industry provides an excellent return on investment for taxpayers,” says Mr Leiters. Mr Leiters says government support is also essential in order to “de-risk” the transition to electrification. “The costs of this technological shift are astronomical, especially for low-volume, highly-specialised suppliers,” he says. “Today, customer demand for electric supercars remains extremely low as the technology is not sufficiently mature to rival the performance of today’s hybrid and combustion engine offerings, which makes it a risky investment both for OEMs and their suppliers. “But we have an opportunity to invest in next-generation, high power-dense battery cell manufacturing and ensure the UK is at the forefront of future performance car powertrain technology,” he says. “Even hybrid vehicles, which we expect will account for the majority of supercars sold throughout this decade, require the need to locally-source high-performance battery technology due to the EU ‘rules of origin’ requirements on exported vehicles,” says Mr Leiters. Mr Leiters says the challenge of meeting rules of origin requirements would only increase with the shift to pure electric vehicles. “Today, our hybrid McLaren Artura powertrain has 64% UK content. If this car was a pure EV, the UK content of the powertrain would reduce to 13% because we cannot currently source the relevant componentry in the UK.” Mr Leiters says that historically it has been the luxury and high-performance market that has led the industry in technological change. “Look at the McLaren P1 – a technological trail-blazer which proved the capability of high-performance hybrid technology long before electrification was in the mainstream.” “Developing a pure EV McLaren supercar, which can rival – if not exceed – the performance and driver-engagement of today’s supercars, could help drive the transition towards pure electrification among mass-market customers,” he says. Mr Leiters says that attracting the right battery suppliers to the UK would also bring long-term benefits outside the performance car industry. “In the future, a thriving UK supply-chain specialising in cutting-edge, high energy density cells would not only support supercar production but also other advanced manufacturing needs such as vertical take-off aircraft and drones,” he says.

Fuel for thought – a sustainable first for the Hagerty Radical Cup UK with Radical SR3 XXR powered by SUSTAIN

Oulton Park, UK (24th June 2024) – Radical racer Gavin McAlpine made history during last weekend’s Hagerty Radical Cup UK, becoming the first driver to use synthetic fuel during the Championship. The green ‘number 17’ car crossed the finish line at Oulton Park Circuit last weekend using the “drop-in” SUSTAIN Super 80 fuel from UK-based Coryton, without any modification to his SR3 XXR. Supported by RAW Motorsports, Gavin McAlpine and his Radical SR3 XXR contested the third round of the single-make Championship in front of over 20,000 spectators, with sustainable fuel developed by bespoke fuel specialist Coryton. SUSTAIN fuels are developed by bespoke fuel specialist Coryton. The fuels currently derive predominantly from second-generation biofuels manufactured from agricultural waste, such as straw, by-products or waste from crops which wouldn’t be used for consumption. This means they utilise the carbon that already exists in our atmosphere, which the plants absorb as they grow, recycling it, rather than releasing additional CO2, as fossil fuels do. Speaking about his decision to use sustainable fuel, Gavin McAlpine said:“I have been exploring sustainable fuels for some years now. Two of the passions in my life are the natural world and the automotive world. I believe that technological developments are the solution to many of the world’s environmental issues, so being able to indulge now one of my passions and contribute to a sustainable low-carbon future is a great step forward for me personally, for the racing community, and of course the future of transportation.” McAlpine’s passion for renewable energy and his fascination with innovation and technical possibilities has led him to become Chairman of RES (Renewable Energy Systems) – the largest global independent renewable energy company now employing 5,000 people and operating across 24 countries developing, constructing and operating large-scale renewable energy projects around the world. Radical Motorsport’s Global Head of Marketing, Jon Roach, added:“The recent developments in sustainable fuel are an exciting step forward for motorsport, offering an alternative solution that can be enjoyed by owners of older cars without the need to make any modifications, and without any impact on performance. Seeing one Radical on the grid here in the UK is a small step, but a step in the right direction and hopefully will provide the catalyst to start the right conversations.“ Before the race weekend, the engineering team at the Radical factory in Peterborough carried out extensive testing with the SUSTAIN Super 80 fuel to ensure that no calibration would be required at the race track, and also that running the fuel would not give any advantage or disadvantage compared to the rest of the Radical grid running the championship-regulated fuel. SUSTAIN Super 80 is a “drop-in fuel”, meaning it can be mixed with all traditional fossil petrols and with no modifications needed to the vehicle. Furthermore, the fuel undergoes a complete molecular restructure to produce a fuel that looks identical to traditional fossil petrol, but from biological sources with less than 1% ethanol to mitigate against the common issues of corrosion caused by a higher percentage of ethanol content. The blend is based on 80% renewable materials and delivers a minimum 65% greenhouse gas saving when compared to traditional fossil fuel, taking into account the carbon costs used to produce and transport the product. David Richardson, New Business Director at Coryton, said:“We’re delighted to be celebrating this sustainable first for the Hagerty Radical Cup UK and to have worked with Gavin and his team to make it happen. Through events like this, we can showcase the power of sustainable fuels and their ability to preserve the sights and sounds of motorsport, without relying on fossil fuel for our ICE engines. Every new milestone we mark takes us one step closer to a cleaner future, and we hope it inspires many more within the industry to explore the technology available.” About Radical Motorsport:Radical Motorsport is one of the world’s most prolific race car manufacturers, with close to 3,000 cars produced in the past 25-plus years. From its 1997 inception, Radical set out to create a customer-led niche in the world of motorsport, a race-bred thrill-a-minute experience on the racetrack. A combination of lightweight construction, superbike-derived technology and aerodynamic downforce delivers models faster than a supercar, totally driver-focused and rewarding to drive. Entering its third decade, the Radical stable includes the entry-level SR1 XXR, the best-selling SR3 XXR alongside the turbo-charged SR10 XXR, alongside the iconic RXC. All models from the renowned racing car manufacturer are solely designed, engineered and built at Radical’s Cambridgeshire headquarters in England. A global dealer network spanning over 20 countries continues to grow, and there are now 12 single-make Radical Cup championships across four different continents, including the factory-supported Radical Cup UK and Radical Cup North America. The pioneering brand focuses on developing responsible and sustainable fuels that contribute towards the push for net zero impact, without compromising on performance or engine protection. From biofuels to e-fuels, the SUSTAIN range uses a combination of the latest sustainable technologies as they mature. Through products such as SUSTAIN Racing and SUSTAIN Classic, SUSTAIN has already celebrated some fantastic milestones in the motoring industry and it plans to continue this success long into the future. Italian President Sergio Mattarella to Inaugurate Ferrari’s New E-Building, Marking a Milestone in Electric Vehicle Production

Ferrari’s New E-Building: A Milestone in Sustainable Automotive Production Maranello, June 21, 2024 – Today marks the inauguration of Ferrari’s e-building, a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to producing internal combustion engines, hybrids, and Ferrari’s first electric model. The event will be graced by Italian President Sergio Mattarella alongside Chairman John Elkann, Vice Chairman Piero Ferrari, CEO Benedetto Vigna, and representatives from the Ferrari workforce. “We are honoured to have President Mattarella with us for this significant occasion,” said John Elkann. “The e-building embodies our commitment to sustainability while ensuring that we continue to invest in our local community and uphold Italian excellence.” Production Flexibility The new plant enhances Ferrari’s production flexibility by integrating the manufacturing of various powertrains under one roof. This approach aligns with their strategy of prioritizing quality over quantity. The facility will produce internal combustion engines, hybrid systems, and electric motors—all designed to deliver the exhilarating driving experience synonymous with Ferrari. This integration allows for more efficient reallocation of production activities across existing facilities in Maranello. Additionally, it houses advanced technology for producing high-voltage batteries and other critical electrical components essential for differentiating Ferrari’s technological edge. Environmental Focus The building is designed for optimal energy performance and features over 3,000 solar panels generating 1.3 MW on its roof. By year-end when the trigeneration plant shuts down[1], it will rely entirely on renewable energy sources both internally generated and externally sourced.[2]…. Several innovative solutions have been implemented to reuse energy and rainwater within the production cycle; notably recovering over 60% of energy used during battery testing.
