The Hyundai KONA/Hyundai KONA Electric emerged victorious ahead of big-selling models from some of the country’s most established mainstream manufacturers to take the award for Best Compact SUV. And in the Driver’s Choice category, the Hyundai IONIQ 5 N’s phenomenal run of success shows no sign of slowing, winning in a category of significantly more expensive offerings from dedicated luxury car and sports car manufacturers. The Business Car magazine and website are recognised across the United Kingdom as leading resources for news on the fleet car market, and members of the editorial team were on hand to present the awards at a ceremony at the Hilton Bankside Hotel in London. Martyn Collins, Editor of Business Car, said: “The second-generation Hyundai KONA follows on from the first by offering petrol, hybrid and electric powertrains. Highlights include the spacious and well-built interior, distinctive styling and on the Hyundai KONA Electric, a first-rate range of up to 319 miles. The Hyundai IONIQ 5 N never feels slow, but it’s dynamically where it really impresses. The steering is wonderfully precise, and the handling amazes, disguising its two-tonne weight. Then there’s a likeable, natural feel to the N-tuned brakes. It even feels composed and comfortable at low speeds – and all at a 2% Benefit-in-Kind rate.” Since arriving in showrooms in 2023, the Hyundai KONA and Hyundai KONA Electric have proven to be a major hit with media and customers alike thanks to their winning blend of futuristic design, excellent cabin comfort and advanced tech. The KONA was immediately crowned Auto Express Car of the Year, and further success has followed in 2024 as it was named Medium Car of the Year at the Company Car and Van awards, while the KONA Electric was hailed as the number one electric car on sale by the Telegraph and earned another Auto Express accolade as Best Small Company Car. Prices start at £26,040 for the 100PS KONA 1.0T, while the KONA Electric can be ordered from £34,995. The IONIQ 5 N, which was created to deliver maximum driving enjoyment by integrating the motorsport-bred technologies and expertise of Hyundai’s N division, has also enjoyed an incredible year, picking up an array of high-profile honours. Already it has been named 2024 World Performance Car in the World Car Awards, 2023 Car of the Year by TopGear.com and Best Performance Car of 2024 by both Auto Express and Autocar. In May, it was also lauded as the world’s best electric performance car by CAR following a definitive seven-car test. The IONIQ 5 N is accessible through many of our fleet sales channels and programmes. It is proving a highly popular choice through Salary Sacrifice schemes which provide a simple and highly affordable platform for customers to access our high performance car through monthly salary deductions. Tim White, Head of Fleet, said: “Hyundai has a very compelling product range, and it is immensely pleasing that the experts at Business Car have identified what a tremendous choice the KONA, KONA Electric and IONIQ 5 N make for the very specific demands of the fleet market. In particular, Hyundai has shown great leadership in electrification, and our cars are ideal for those businesses that want to reduce their carbon footprint but want vehicles that demand no compromise to the driving experience.” For more information on all the cars in Hyundai UK’s award-winning range, visit www.hyundai.co.uk

BMW Group UK triumphs at the Business Car Awards 2024

BMW named Fleet Manufacturer of the Year for the third consecutive year Overall ‘Business Car of the Year’ awarded to the all-new MINI Cooper Four additional wins for BMW Group across a range of categories BMW i4, 5 Series, X1 and MINI Cooper each top their respective class BMW Group UK is celebrating another successful year at the 2024 Business Car Awards, with BMW retaining the coveted Fleet Manufacturer of the Year title for a third consecutive year. Boasting more options for fleets than ever before, MINI also came out on top as the all-new MINI Cooper garners two wins, including overall Business Car of the Year. A further three accolades were awarded across the product portfolio, with BMW i4, BMW 5 Series and BMW X1 each topping their respective categories. On presenting the headline award, Martyn Collins, Editor, Business Car Magazine said, “With its model range growing again this year, especially from the MINI side, BMW has its most complete offering ever for fleet and continues to build on its strong record – particularly with EVs. Support for company car drivers is equally impressive, with further innovations for its ‘Corporate Certified’ programme, aimed at improving the retailer experience.” All-new MINI Cooper crowned overall Business Car of the Year.Launched earlier this year and offered with a choice of either an all-electric or combustion-engine powertrain, the all-new MINI Cooper prevailed at this year’s Business Car Awards, topping the small car class before clinching overall Business Car of the Year. Judges praised the model’s “simplified styling”, “high-tech, retro-influenced interior” and the “excellent” 250-mile range, with Business Car commenting, “This year the MINI Hatch – now called the Cooper – received a high-tech makeover, but its premium feel remains unchanged, and whether you choose ICE or EV power, all are great to drive. Add this all up, with the Electric version’s credible range, and this is an attractive small car package that will really appeal to fleet.” With the launch of the new MINI family the brand has introduced a compelling fleet offering for a range of market segments. In addition to the MINI Cooper, the larger MINI Countryman Electric and forthcoming all-electric MINI Aceman both provide an impressive single-charge range of up to 287* and 252 miles* respectively. The entire MINI lineup boasts a high level of standard equipment, including a state-of-the-art circular OLED display, sustainable interior materials, and all-new MINI Experience Modes. Company car buyers can also take advantage of a low benefit-in-kind (BIK) tax rate of 2 per cent across the all-electric model range. BMW i4, 5 Series and X1 each top their respective class.Recently refreshed with new design details, revised headlights and optional Laserlight tail lights, the BMW i4 continues to impress almost three years after its original debut, receiving the award for Best Premium Car. Commenting on the win, Business Car said, “Despite more EV and ICE-powered rivals, none can still touch the BMW i4. Whether you go for the eDrive 35, or the range-topping M50, the excellent electric range is trustworthy, it oozes driver appeal, and it’s practical with the hatchback design.” Continuing its impressive 2024 winning streak, the BMW 5 Series retains the top spot as Business Car’s Best Executive Car for the fifth consecutive year. On presenting the gong, judges said, “The replacement for the last 5 Series had big shoes to fill, but whether you choose EV, PHEV, or ICE power, the i5/5 Series remains our executive pick. It looks great inside and out, there’s the additional choice of Touring estate versions, and all offer a keen drive.” Rounding up the awards, the third generation BMW X1 solidifies its position as Business Car’s Best Premium Medium SUV, securing the title for the second year running. Judges described the model as “an attractive package” with a “spacious interior”, “willing performance” and “a great drive, plus the accomplished range for EV and plug-in versions equals low running costs.” Reflecting on BMW Group’s success at this year’s awards, Matt Collins, General Manager, Corporate Sales BMW Group UK, said, “We are incredibly proud to retain Business Car’s Fleet Manufacturer of the Year title for a third consecutive year. This is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the Corporate Sales team, who continue to strive for excellence in serving the evolving needs of our corporate customers. We’re equally delighted by the recognition MINI has received at this year’s awards – it’s a real honour for the MINI Cooper to be crowned overall Business Car of the Year. The additional four category wins really are the icing on the cake.”

Business Car’s expert judging panel praised Renault Group’s programme of investment that, together with its breadth of innovative and emotive Renault, Dacia and Alpine models, has led to the brand’s recent sales success in the fleet sector. On awarding the ‘Most Improved Manufacturer’ title, Business Car Magazine Editor Martyn Collins said: “The arrival of a new head of fleet, Justin Costello, and the significant investment in people, programmes and processes, has signalled Renault Group’s ambitions in the sector this year – but it is the sales results that truly underpin its status as a rapidly improving fleet operator, with car market share up by more than 50%.” Justin Costello, Renault Group’s Head of Fleet, said: “Renault Group has come a long way in the last few years, as this award demonstrates, our brands now offer a true end to end solution for business users. The Renault Scenic E-Tech 100% electric was voted “Car of the Year” last February and the New Renault Master was awarded the “Van of the Year” title earlier this week by the International Van of the Year (IVOTY) jury during IAA Transportation in Hanover.

Vehicle recalls ten times more likely in 2024 than 30 years ago

Data from UK recalls and predictions from The Car Expert suggest that more than 250 recalls will be issued to UK drivers in 2024, impacting as many as 1.8 million vehicles More than 170 separate car recalls issued by DVSA in first eight months of 2024 As cars become more complex, with technology and connectivity systems, recalls and safety concerns also increase Vehicle recalls now integrated in The Car Expert’s leading Expert Rating Index The car brand that’s been hit with the most recalls in 2024 is Mercedes-Benz, with 16 recalls covering more than 337,000 cars. Several brands have had zero recalls this year London, UK 20 September 2024 With vehicle recalls in the news this week, The Car Expert has been analysing UK recall data over the last 30 years. The analysis shows that the rate of vehicle recalls has surged more than tenfold compared to initial figures from the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) in 1994. Almost 1.1 million cars (almost 1.2 million vehicles in total)* have been recalled by the DVSA in the first eight months of 2024, according to The Car Expert, the leading automotive consumer advice platform. Data collected as part of the introduction of recalls to its Expert Rating Index reveals that the number of vehicle recalls has surged over the last 30 years. Back in 1994, only 27 passenger car recalls were issued according to the DVSA*. At the current rate in 2024, The Car Expert predicts 260 recalls could issued by the end of the year, affecting up to 1.8 million cars. Passenger cars make up the vast majority of DVSA vehicle recalls, which also include vans, trucks, buses, motorcycles, motorhomes, trailers and even accessories like car seats. Given the significance of recalls for car buyers and owners, The Car Expert has started integrating DVSA recall data into its revered Expert Rating Index. Now drivers and car buyers can easily see whether their vehicle, or a vehicle they’re interested in purchasing, has been subject to any recalls and confirm if the necessary repairs have been completed. Recalls can be serious business, and in the UK, the DVSA only issues recalls for safety concerns, but non-safety issues can also lead to voluntary recalls. The severity of a recall can vary, ranging from adjustments in maintenance schedules to ‘Stop Drive’ orders where a vehicle must not be driven until repairs are made. As has been reported widely in the news over the last week, BMW Group has recalled about 1.5 million cars worldwide – which also includes Rolls-Royce and Mini models – for a potential braking problem. It’s estimated that it could cost the car maker $1 billion to make the necessary fixes, which wiped about ten per cent of the company’s market value last week. Here in the UK, Mercedes-Benz has recalled more than 337,000 passenger cars to date this year for various issues, some up to six years old. However, it’s not just brand-new or nearly-new vehicles that are at risk of a recall, the oldest cars recalled this year include Audi A4 models dating back to 2004 – cars built 20 years ago. Stuart Masson, Editorial Director at The Car Expert, said, “Recalls in the UK are a serious matter because the DVSA only issues them when there are safety concerns. This means the potential risks to drivers and passengers are significant if the recall isn’t remedied immediately. “With the number of recalls increasing year by year, it’s more important than ever for drivers to be informed about the process. Clear, accessible advice is essential so that vehicle owners understand not only the nature of the recall but also the steps they need to take to address the issue. Educating drivers on how to promptly book their vehicles in for repairs and ensuring these problems are resolved swiftly can greatly reduce the risks to road safety. “At The Car Expert, we’re constantly looking at ways to help drivers navigate vehicle ownership – whether it’s updating them about their current vehicle, or providing insights on new vehicles, to assist in the car buying process. That’s why we’ve added DVSA recall information to our award-winning Expert Rating Index for each model of car. That way, you can see which recalls have been ordered for your car and check to see whether the work has been done.” According to The Car Expert, 41 different car manufacturers have issued recalls for vehicles so far this year [2024], ranging from budget brands like Dacia and Fiat to über-luxury brands like Koenigsegg and Rolls-Royce. The Car Expert’s Expert Rating Index, which now includes vehicle recalls, includes 55 vehicle manufacturers and has nearly 550 cars rated. This includes 15,978 independent car reviews and counting, with more than 20 million data points included. Unlike other ratings of this type, The Car Expert includes data from Euro NCAP, reliability data and five-year running cost information. The brand perceives this to be the most comprehensive analysis of expert opinion and real-world data found anywhere in the motoring world.
