Protean Electric’s new Gen 5 in-wheel motor sets new industry benchmark after rigorous testing and validation

Farnham, UK – [27 August 2024] – Following its launch earlier this year, UK-based Protean Electric (Protean) can confirm its all-new ProteanDrive Generation 5 (Gen 5) in-wheel motor (IWM) has completed its full validation programme and can now boast industry leading peak torque of 1500 Nm in an 18-inch IWM. Today, Protean can confirm the Gen 5 ProteanDrive IWM (Pd18 Gen5) has completed its extensive integrated validation programme covering all applicable legislation, regulation, and OEM standards applicable to the IWM. In this process, Protean tested over 80 IWMs, running through 64 test programmes. In turn, Protean can also announce that its Pd18 Gen5 now delivers 1500 Nm peak torque, which sets a new industry standard for the performance of an IWM, fitting in an 18-inch wheel with an integrated inverter. Designed, tested, and manufactured by Protean, the Pd18 Gen5 encapsulates over 15 years of learning, drawing on the collective knowledge of its engineering talent who, combined now have over 700 person-years of IWM development experience. Pd18 Gen5 is developed and validated for mainstream automotive applications, meeting 15 years and 300,000 km durability requirements. In doing so Protean has validated all environment durability requirements put upon IWMs, such as wading, pothole impact and other harsh conditions seen in the wheel. Pd18 Gen5 is designed and validated to ISO26262 as a Safety Element Out of Context, including mitigating ASIL-D hazards – an impressive first for IWMs. As a result, Protean has also set a second industry benchmark for IWM maturity and validation. Discussing this industry achievement, Stephen Lambert, Chief Technology Officer of Protean Electric, said, “In-wheel motors are proving to be a pivotal, enabling technology for the next generation of EVs. However, much like the first EVs, there needs to be a testing and validation rulebook set out. As an industry, much has been discussed about the design and validation challenges of in-wheel motors, particularly the demands of reliability and durability due to the harshest installation environments. Looking to the future, our team has invested heavily in our test and validation procedures to ensure that the Gen 5 IWM, exposed to severe shock, vibration, thermal cycle, sand, dust, water, and chemical contamination, is designed to last and do the distance, securing a net-zero future across multiple vehicles and transport solutions.” Produced from Protean’s manufacturing facility in Tianjin, China, with IATF 16949 certification, the IWM leader showcases the beginning of a full-scale industrialisation of the most advanced and mature IWM product available globally today. Currently Protean works with a range of OEMs and aftermarket applications, with the ability to scale growth as the application grows in popularity and versatility. Recognising the depth and adaptability of Protean’s Gen 5 Pd18, the team has designed the IWM in a modular configuration, which leads to faster development of new product variations at lower risk. This includes offering integrated and detached inverters, with 400Vdc lead products available now, with 800Vdc products by the end of 2024. Protean will be displaying its Gen 5 Pd18 at the upcoming Cenex Expo 2024 at UTAC Millbrook, UK, from 4th to 5th September and will have key members of its leadership team at the UK Government Pavilion.

It’s a wrap! Colourful convertible celebrates Bentley’s third Manchester Pride

Bentley marks year-round support for LGBTQ+ community at Manchester Pride parade where many Bentley colleagues live Uniquely-wrapped Continental GTC third annual entry at festival celebrating love and unity Eye-catching Rich Morris design focussed on celebrating love in all its forms and accepting differences 75 Bentley colleagues, family and friends march in solidarity with LGBTQ+ community Colourful convertible celebrates progress of BeProud LGBTQ+ network at Bentley (Crewe, 27 August 2024) Bentley Motors celebrated its year-round support for the LGBTQ+ community with a uniquely-wrapped convertible at this year’s Manchester Pride Parade. The colourful Continental GTC featured a design by Rich Morris and was escorted through the flamboyant festival by 75 Bentley colleagues, family and friends. Bentley’s third annual entry in the Manchester parade follows the brand’s involvement at both the Crewe Pride and Nantwich Pride events, close to the company’s headquarters in the North West of England. Bentley colleagues at the Pyms Lane factory also continue to be active in other community outreach projects, supporting the luxury marque’s culture of ensuring all employees feel comfortable bringing their true, authentic selves to the workplace. For the colleague-led network BeProud and the community, taking part in Pride is far more significant than waving flags and loud celebration; it is a strong statement of support for the LGBTQ+ community not just at the home of Bentley in Crewe or its regional city of Manchester, but for all those marginalised and facing discrimination across the world. Pride started as a protest and continues to provide hope and progress for the community. Colleagues previously taking part in Pride have found it a transformational experience of love and acceptance, describing it as ‘incomparable’, ‘empowering’, as well as creating a ‘feeling of belonging’. Rich Morris’ bold design for the Continental GTC featured the colours of the Progress flag, created to celebrate diversity and inclusion for everyone in the LGBTQ+ community. The focus of the parade car was ‘finding your community’ – an important factor for those who have grown up feeling different and suffering from prejudice. A unique feature of this truly proud one-of-one handcrafted Bentley are the especially curated headrests, designed and manufactured by the in-house Design and Manufacturing teams. They showcase the pride in manufacturing whilst embodying the Manchester Pride theme ‘Buzzin’ to be Queer – A Hive of Progress’, alongside Bentley’s own colony of over one million bees onsite. There are 6,184 stitches in each embroidered pattern totalling 24,736 stitches across the front and rear headrests. Each headrest takes 15 minutes to embroider the BeProud logo, using the Bentley expanded font, alongside the Manchester Bee. The embroidery features nine unique Bentley coloured threads – Vivid Magenta, Azure Purple, Key Lime Green, Beluga, Reflex Blue, Cyber Yellow, White, Mandarin and Kingfisher Blue. The production of these headrests allowed the Bentley colleagues to showcase their support and pride for the BeProud network. Karen Lange, Member of the Board for Human Resources, Bentley Motors, said:“Our backing of the LGBTQ+ community is an ongoing, year-round commitment – not just during Pride Month. Rich Morris’ design featured on Bentley’s fourth dedicated Pride Car represents love, new life and acceptance. These important parades celebrate awareness and progress, while inspiring others to challenge discrimination and prejudice.” Wayne Bruce, Chief Communications and DEI Officer at Bentley Motors, added:“Manchester Pride allowed us to celebrate the years of progress made by BeProud at Bentley. The group focusses on LGBTQ+ topics and, as this year’s Parade theme was ‘Buzzin’ To Be Queer – A Hive of Progress’, it came at a timely moment for the 600 colleagues involved across the wider Bentley networks. The bee symbolises not only the hard work but also the ongoing commitment to progress, and DEI that Bentley champions.”

UK drivers warned: Are you Safe2Drive?

UK employers and employees are urged to review their car insurance policies, amidst growing concerns from risk management business Safe2Drive, that not all drivers using their own cars for work will have the correct insurance cover. Journeys such as travelling between sites, visiting clients, making deliveries, attending meetings would all need additional business cover. Recent intelligence from Safe2Drive, indicate that significant numbers of UK motorists mistakenly believe that their standard car insurance policy covers them for business use. However, most standard policies only cover social, domestic, and pleasure use, with business use requiring an additional level of cover. Allan Gibbons, Managing Director of Safe2Drive, commented “It is crucial for all businesses to have visibility of their Grey Fleet Drivers* driving licence and visibility of the vehicle they are driving on company business to ensure legal compliance. Employers and employees need to collaborate. “Employers and employees can be in breach of the law if their employees are driving without adequate cover or driving an illegal vehicle. For Grey Fleet employees, paying a small premium to add business use to their insurance policy would ensure they are legally compliant and not out of pocket in the long term. “Additionally, with the journey towards a green future, the business may have a Carbon Footprint Policy and will require emissions data from their Grey Fleet drivers to ensure they meet their environmental criteria.” Employers have an essential duty of care to ensure the safety and well-being of their employees when they are driving their own cars for work purposes. This responsibility extends beyond the confines of the workplace and includes verifying that employees have the appropriate insurance coverage for business use of their vehicles. Failure to have the correct insurance could lead to serious consequences for both the employer and employee, including legal non-compliance, claims refused, fines and penalties, increased costs and in some cases a criminal record. Employers must also provide adequate training and guidance on safe driving practices, ensure that vehicles are regularly maintained and road legal, as well as implement clear policies regarding the use of personal vehicles for work. By fulfilling these obligations, employers not only comply with legal requirements but also promote a culture of safety, reduce the risk of accidents, and protect both their employees and their business from potential liabilities.

1983 Classic Mini ‘Mentley’ wins Hot Wheels Legends Tour UK 2024

1983 classic Mini ‘Mentley’ wins UK leg of the Hot Wheels Legends Tour – with a chance of becoming the next legendary die-cast toy Dominic Whittle’s build fought off stiff competition from over 180 entrants to claim the UK crown Three finalists gathered in front of automotive fans and a panel of expert judges at SlammedUK’s Gravity Show at the NEC on 24-25 August A 1983 Austin Mini, remodelled with styling to evoke the classic Bentley Speed 8s of the 1920s, was named as the winner of the 2024 Hot Wheels Legends Tour UK – hosted by SlammedUK’s Gravity Show at the NEC. Set to represent the UK on the global stage and stake its claim to be recreated as a 1:64 scale die-cast model, the Mini ‘Mentley’ was first conceived as a track day car, before being gradually transformed into the showpiece it is today. Beneath the bonnet is a fully engineered 320bhp TVR V8 engine and Range Rover gearbox, when boosted by nitrous through straight exhaust pipes, early trials suggest it may achieve 0-60mph in three seconds in a straight line – if the driver is courageous enough! Owned by a trio of musicians – Dominic Whittle, Gary Selby and Mike Williams – the three friends use it to travel across Europe with their instruments strapped to the luggage rack performing throughout France, Italy and Germany to raise money for Save the Children. “It’s a huge privilege for us to win the UK round of the Hot Wheels Legends Tour with ‘Mentley’, justifying the hard work (and fun) we had creating it,” says Dominic Whittle. “Our interest in cars began when we were six years old, and it’s great to be here 53 years later with a vehicle that reflects those childhood memories. “We’ve had a fantastic time, the other two finalists have been great and we’re in awe of their ability and builds. To be immersed in a world of car enthusiasts for two days as part of the Gravity Show has been tremendous.” Beating over 180 entries, Dominic Whittle’s Mini ‘Mentley’ impressed the judging panel, led by Hot Wheels’ design manager Craig Callum, with its unmistakable authenticity and character capturing the essence of the Hot Wheels Legends Tour. Judges Nicola Hume (host of Red Bull’s ‘Talking Bull’ podcast), Jordan Clarke (founder of Slammed UK) and influencer Mat Armstrong scored each entry against a strict set of criteria – design, authenticity and garage spirit, as well as performance, fun and the story behind the build. As Craig Callum explains; “The Hot Wheels Legends Tour celebrates the builders, visionaries and the people in the automotive world who put in the late nights, early mornings and creativity to produce a legend. Once again the UK has provided some fantastic contenders full of the creativity, garage spirit and authenticity that makes Hot Wheels Legends so special. “With a wild engine transplant squeezed into a unique design twist of two British icons, Dominic Whittle’s Mini ‘Mentley’ perfectly captures the fun we are looking for, and if you look at our past Legends, this is a true contender – it’s the kind of design we would develop in the studio ourselves. It’s got such authenticity, but it’s also completely different, there are so many little touches that give it character. When I think practically about how we make a die-cast Hot Wheels, with four main component parts, the vehicle lends itself for manufacture. It’s spot on.” The initial entry list was narrowed down to eight semi-finalists by Hot Wheels representatives on both sides of the Atlantic, with marques such as Lamborghini, Volkswagen, Ford and Porsche having vied for the opportunity – alongside the 1999 BMW E36 SlammedUK fan vote winner Jason Gorle, which was fast-tracked to the UK final, where it joined Jason West’s 1992 Ford P100. For only the second time, the 2024 UK final was open to the public – taking place at the Gravity Show this weekend – the UK’s largest modified and supercar show, held at the Birmingham NEC. After winning the UK leg of the Hot Wheels Legends Tour, the Mini ‘Mentley’ will compete against regional finalists at the Global Semi-Final on November 2nd with the Grand Finale set for November 11th with the overall victor being transformed into a die-cast that will be sold around the world. Whittle hopes to follow in the footsteps of last year’s winner – Michael Wallhead’s MG-Beast – who took the UK entry to the Global Finale for the third consecutive year. Coupled with Lee Johnstone’s 1969 Volvo P1800 Gasser, winning the competition overall in 2021 – it underlines the UK’s place and standing in worldwide car culture. Aston Martin Vantage GT3 chasing glory as FIA World Endurance Championship returns to COTA

New Aston Martin Vantage GT3 chasing victory on FIA World Endurance Championship Circuit of the Americas [COTA] debut Aston Martin the most successful GT manufacturer at Austin, as WEC returns to COTA for the first time since 2020 The Heart of Racing [THoR] all set to make its WEC home race ‘debut’ Vantage on the podium again in IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship as THoR GTD hot streak continues Works driver Ross Gunn closes in on IMSA GTD Pro points lead Tuesday, 27 August, 2024, Austin, USA: Aston Martin makes a racing return to the Circuit of the Americas [COTA] and the Lone Star Le Mans 6 hours race – scene of extraordinary success for Vantage in the FIA World Endurance Championship [WEC] – as the newest Vantage GT3 prepares to take its Texas bow in the hands of partner teams The Heart of Racing [THoR] and D’station Racing, this weekend. No other manufacturer boasts such a tremendous victory tally at the Austin venue, which returns to the WEC calendar for the first time since 2020 when Aston Martin also recorded a double-class victory. Indeed, the British ultraluxury sportscar brand has achieved no less than nine GT class wins in the six events COTA has staged since the series was formed in 2012. That’s a 75% win ratio, and four of those triumphs were double-class victories. Aston Martin’s GT3-based challenger, which is closely derived from the new Vantage road car unveiled earlier this year at Silverstone, is built around Aston Martin’s proven bonded aluminium chassis and is powered by a fearsome twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 engine. And while it awaits its first victory at world championship level, the car has already proven itself in other categories and is increasingly competitive in the closely-contested LMGT3 class, which features no less than nine manufacturers. THoR (which competes on home ground for the first time since it joined WEC at Spa in 2023), raced to second place in the most recent WEC round – the 6 Hours of Sao Paolo – in Brazil, last month. The result meant its driver crew, comprised of team principal Ian James (GBR), Alex Ribeiras (ESP) and Daniel Mancinelli (ITA), closed the gap in the fight for second in the LMGT3 points standings. They head into COTA fourth, 20 points from second, and 45 off the lead, with a maximum of 91 available from the last three races. This performance follows another second place in the season-opening Qatar 1812 event and a brilliant if unrewarded showing in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, where the Aston Martin Vantage GT3 led for long periods of the event. D’station Racing has also recorded a podium result this season, finishing third in Qatar. Since then, the team has delivered a solid campaign with points finishes in every round, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans where the team recorded an important top ten finish in class with team owner Satoshi Hoshino stepping back in to the driver line-up. Hoshino’s seat is now re-occupied by Clément Mateu (FRA), who has contested all the rounds bar Le Mans. He is joined by Aston Martin’s most decorated active works driver, Marco Sørensen (DEN), a three-time FIA WEC champion in the GT classes and a Rolex 24 and 24 Hours of Le Mans class winner, and now the most recent Spa 24 Hours winner alongside fellow works drivers Nicki Thiim (DEN) and Mattia Drudi (ITA). Erwan Bastard (FRA), a French and European GT4 title-winner, completes the driving strength in the #777. The trio sit seventh in the championship standings, just 11 points behind THoR. Outside of WEC, momentum around the Aston Martin Vantage GT3 is already building as THoR’s IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship campaign ramps up. The US-based team extended its podium-run to five consecutive rounds at the Virginia International Raceway, with both its cars recording top-three class finishes in the 160-minute sprint race, on Sunday. Works driver Ross Gunn (GBR), who shares the GTD Pro #23 Aston Martin Vantage GT3 with Alex Riberas (ESP), closed in on the class points lead with third place, to add to the duo’s recent victories at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park [Mosport] and Watkins Glen. Gunn, currently second in the standings, is now just 17 points away from the GTD Pro class lead (less than the 30-point difference between finishing first and second) and with two races left to run at Indianapolis and Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta offering up a possible 770 points. Meanwhile former IMSA GTD champion Roman De Angelis and fellow Canadian team-mate Zacharie Robichon finished second in the GTD class with their #27 Aston Martin Vantage GT3 – this follows on from a third place at Road America last time out and a GTD class win at Mosport in mid-July. Adam Carter, Aston Martin Head of Endurance Motorsport, said: “The Aston Martin Vantage GT3 has established itself as a competitive force on the global GT landscape in a relatively short period of time. And, but for some significant misfortune might also already have an FIA WEC class victory to its name to stand alongside its Spa 24 Hours win and The Heart of Racing’s multiple class wins in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and D’station Racing’s SUPER GT class win in Japan. Historically, Aston Martin has been incredibly successful at COTA in WEC, and the ingredients are there with both THoR and D’station Racing for the new Vantage GT3 to continue that trend this weekend.” Official practice for the Lone Star Le Mans begins on Friday, 30 August at 1240 local time (1840 BST) with the race beginning at 1300 (1900 BST) on Sunday.
